Chapter 3: Working Together
Two weeks later, after school, Alex and Alice sat in the student committee meeting room, surrounded by a handful of other students. As the newly elected president, Alex took her role seriously—this was supposed to boost her university applications, not become another source of stress. Yet, as she glanced around the room, she had a sinking feeling that today would be one of those days.
Principal Watkins had tasked them with organizing a donor gala, an event meant to impress wealthy patrons and secure more funding for the school. Sanjay Patel, one of the committee members, beamed as he held up the poster he had designed.
"I present to you—Black and White Elegance," Sanjay announced dramatically. "A theme that is timeless, classy, and absolutely foolproof."
Alex tilted her head, studying the design. The words Black & White Gala were written in cursive over a minimalist background. She tried to find something encouraging to say. "You really worked hard on this, Sanjay…"
Before she could finish, a familiar voice drawled from the doorway.
"Really?"
The room fell into a hushed silence as Lorenzo Valenrian leaned against the doorframe, his signature smirk firmly in place. He was dressed in his usual effortless style—his white shirt had the top two buttons undone, and his navy blue blazer hung casually under his arm. His piercing blue eyes scanned the room before landing directly on Alex.
Alex stiffened. Of all the people in this school, why him?
Lorenzo sauntered inside, moving with the kind of effortless confidence that irritated her beyond reason. He pulled out a chair and leaned back, stretching out his long legs like he owned the place.
"I thought you were planning a gala, not a funeral," he said, nodding toward Sanjay's poster.
Sanjay bristled. "Hey! Black and white is classic. It's elegant, sophisticated—"
"—boring," Lorenzo cut in smoothly, flashing his signature lazy grin. "No offense, Patel."
Alex exhaled sharply, rubbing her temples before leveling him with an unimpressed stare. "Valenrian, what are you doing here?"
Lorenzo leaned in just slightly, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret meant only for her. "Calm your panties, Alex," he murmured, his breath warm against her skin. "I know you're happy to see me."
Heat rushed to her face, and she snapped her head toward him. "Stop thinking you have an effect on my—"
She cut herself off too late. The smirk on his lips turned downright wicked.
"Oh?" He tilted his head, eyes gleaming with amusement. "Go on."
Alex clenched her jaw. "You wish, Valenrian." She inhaled sharply, forcing her expression back to neutral. "Now, seriously, why are you here?"
Lorenzo finally leaned back, resting an arm over the chair beside him. "Well, your beloved principal decided I needed some… community service." His smirk deepened. "Apparently, you can't drink wine at school. Who knew?"
A few of the committee members giggled, whispering among themselves. Alice, on the other hand, was outright grinning, clearly enjoying every second of this.
"As punishment," Lorenzo continued, waving a hand lazily, "I have to help organize this… gala." His tone dripped with disinterest before he turned to the rest of the committee, flashing a charming smile. "Hello, ladies."
Most of them blushed or whispered excitedly, but his gaze never left Alex.
Alex groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose. "This cannot be happening."
Lorenzo chuckled, watching her reaction like he was thoroughly entertained. He propped his chin on his hand, grinning.
"Oh, sweetheart," he said smoothly, "it is."
Lorenzo's smirk widened as he watched the chaos unfold around him, clearly reveling in the attention. With a flick of his hair, he leaned forward, an idea forming in his mind.
"Okay, I've got a theme that'll really get people talking," he said, his voice smooth and confident. "How about Tainted Garden of Eden?"
The room fell silent, every head turning to him in a mix of confusion and intrigue.
"Tainted Garden of Eden?" Alex echoed, raising an eyebrow. "What even is that supposed to mean?"
Lorenzo leaned back in his chair, hands behind his head, exuding a casual charm. "Think about it. We take the classic idea of paradise—the lush greenery, the fruit trees, all that heavenly stuff—and add a twist. Maybe we incorporate some darker elements, like mysterious shadows, thorns, and a bit of temptation."
Sanjay frowned. "Isn't that a little… dramatic?"
"Dramatic sells," Lorenzo replied, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Imagine the decor: deep reds and lush greens, some faux vines hanging from the ceiling, and of course, strategically placed lights to create an enchanting atmosphere. We can even have 'forbidden' fruits as centerpieces."
A couple of the girls in the committee giggled, clearly taken by the idea.
Alice leaned closer to Alex, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "It's edgy! I like it."
Alex couldn't believe what she was hearing. "You really think people will be okay with a theme that sounds like it belongs in a horror movie?"
Lorenzo shrugged, a teasing grin on his lips. "It's not horror, it's intrigue. It'll spark conversations and attract attention. Besides, who doesn't love a little danger?"
Alex rolled her eyes, trying to mask her growing annoyance. "Right, because what we need is a bunch of donors feeling tempted."
Lorenzo leaned forward, his expression suddenly serious. "Look, Alex, you can either go with a safe, boring theme that no one will remember, or you can take a risk and do something bold that might just blow everyone away. What's the point of a gala if it doesn't leave an impression?"
The tension in the room shifted as some of the committee members exchanged glances, considering his words.
"Okay, I'm intrigued," Alice said, raising her hand. "Let's hear more about this Tainted Garden of Eden idea."
Alex sighed, knowing that it would only encourage Lorenzo further. "Fine, but this better not turn into a circus."
Lorenzo's grin returned, and he leaned back in his chair, clearly pleased with himself. "Trust me, you'll thank me later."
Alex shot him a skeptical look. "You're really going to be insufferable, aren't you?"
"Only when I'm around you," Lorenzo replied with a wink, and Alex felt her resolve waver just a bit.
As the meeting continued, Alex couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of something she wasn't quite ready for.
As the meeting wrapped up, Alex felt a headache forming. Lorenzo's presence alone was enough to test her patience, but now he was actively involved in planning the gala. She gathered her notes and stood up, only for Lorenzo to fall into step beside her as they exited the room.
"You know, I think we make a good team," Lorenzo mused, stuffing his hands into his pockets.
Alex shot him a look. "We are not a team, Valenrian. You're just an unfortunate side effect of this committee."
Lorenzo let out a low chuckle. "Deny it all you want, but deep down, I know you love the idea."
Alex stopped in her tracks, turning to face him. "Listen, I don't know what game you think you're playing, but I'm not interested. This gala is important, and I don't have time for distractions."
Lorenzo tilted his head, his blue eyes twinkling with something unreadable. "Who said anything about distractions? I'm here to help."
"Help?" Alex scoffed. "Right. Because when I think of responsible, reliable committee members, you are at the top of the list."
"Exactly," Lorenzo said smoothly, flashing his signature grin. "You're catching on."
Alex groaned and picked up her pace, determined to leave him behind. Unfortunately, Lorenzo matched her stride effortlessly.
"You know," he continued, "you're awfully tense. Maybe you should let loose a little. Ever considered having fun, Dunphy?"
Alex glared at him. "My fun doesn't include dealing with arrogant rich boys who think they own the world."
Lorenzo smirked. "You wound me."
Before Alex could respond, Alice appeared out of nowhere, linking arms with her. "Sooo," she drawled, eyes flickering between the two of them, "what's going on here? You two looked cozy."
Alex pulled away immediately. "Nothing is going on."
Lorenzo placed a hand over his heart, feigning hurt. "Nothing? And here I thought we had a special connection."
Alice giggled. "Lorenzo, you really enjoy pushing her buttons, don't you?"
"It's my new favorite pastime," Lorenzo admitted with a wink.
Alex groaned. "I hate you all."
Lorenzo's laughter followed her as she walked away, and for the first time, Alex had the sinking feeling that avoiding him was going to be impossible.
