Chapter 4: Chapter 3: Yotsuya Miko’s Surprise
After school, in the teacher's office.
"I said, Ryuu..."
"I'm here! Beautiful, generous, mature, and lovely teacher, Hiratsuka-sensei!"
"...Flattery won't get you anywhere. And stop calling me that! Show some respect for your teacher!"
Hiratsuka Shizuka swung a swift karate chop toward Ryuu's head, but he effortlessly dodged it, smirking.
"You… ugh, forget it!"
Letting out a long sigh, Hiratsuka leaned back in her chair, resigning herself to the fact that her usual discipline methods were useless against this guy.
Skipping past the usual banter, she studied Ryuu for a moment.
He really was good-looking. Sharp features, confident demeanor, and a natural athletic build—it wasn't hard to see why the girls at Soubu High were drawn to him.
"Sensei?"
Hearing his voice, Hiratsuka snapped out of her thoughts, a barely perceptible blush crossing her face before she cleared her throat.
"You've been in school for two months now. Do you have any idea how many times you've been called out for sleeping in class?"
Ryuu blinked, tilting his head as if trying to recall.
"Shouldn't be that many. I sit in a pretty good spot, out of sight."
"..."
Hiratsuka massaged her temples.
"When I ask you this, you're supposed to reflect on your actions!"
"The knowledge you gain in high school is meant to prepare you for the future. University is a new starting point in life. Do you seriously plan to just coast through high school?"
"Sensei, you know I'm not interested in this stuff," Ryuu replied, his voice calm but firm.
Hiratsuka raised an eyebrow. "Then what are you interested in?"
"...If I had to sum it up, probably ghosts."
Hiratsuka stared at him in silence.
"Answer seriously! Besides, ghosts don't exist! This is the modern world—we live in a scientific society!"
"You wouldn't understand, sensei."
Ryuu shook his head, his expression unfazed. "The world can be divided into two things—what's visible and what's invisible. When you start seeing the latter, science becomes nothing more than a joke."
"Besides, not everyone goes to university just to find a job and make money. I already have a way to make a living."
Something about his confidence made Hiratsuka hesitate. Against her better judgment, she found herself asking, "And what might that be?"
"Exorcisms. Cleansing spirits."
Ryuu's tone was completely serious. "Rich people fear the unknown more than anything. If you land the right clients, the profits are insane."
This kid… isn't he just describing one of those shady shrine scams?
A vein twitched on Hiratsuka's forehead. She seriously wondered why she was wasting her time listening to this nonsense.
Still, she held back her usual lecture. He was only a first-year, after all. It was normal to have wild fantasies at this age. Crushing them outright wasn't exactly her job.
"Alright, that's enough."
She sighed, waving a hand dismissively.
"I don't care what you do. But if I catch you sleeping in class again, you will regret it."
"Understood!" Ryuu replied lazily. He then added, "If that's all, sensei, I'll be heading out."
"Get out of here already!"
Hiratsuka waved him off impatiently.
Despite his reputation as a cool, easygoing guy, Ryuu was nothing but trouble.
And yet... ghosts, huh?
It was kind of ridiculous.
But at the same time... maybe that's just what it means to be young.
Letting out another sigh, Hiratsuka sat back in her chair, shaking her head.
---
Outside the corridor.
"Ah, Ryuu's out."
As soon as he stepped into the hallway, Tobe and the others immediately gathered around.
"This is new. Ryuu, even if you don't like what she says, you should at least pretend to listen," Miura Yumiko commented with a smirk.
Beside her, Ebina Hina muttered under her breath, "Shouldn't you be encouraging him to study instead?"
"No..."
Ryuu shook his head. "I figured I was out of her sight most of the time. Plus, with all those books piled up around me, I thought I was pretty well hidden."
"Maybe that's why you stood out," Hayama Hayato chimed in with a knowing smile. Then, with an easygoing nod, he added, "Anyway, since you're done, let's get going."
No one had any objections to Hayama's suggestion.
As they strolled through the hallway, Tobe grinned, nudging Ryuu. "Man, you really had Hiratsuka-sensei at her wit's end. I swear, I thought she was gonna snap when you started talking about ghosts."
Apparently, those waiting outside had overheard part of the conversation.
Hearing this, Yuigahama Yui shivered slightly. "Ghosts are so creepy. There's no way they exist, right, Ryuu?"
Ryuu simply shrugged. "Who knows?"
"Ugh, that's a terrible answer!"
"Alright, Yui," Hayama chuckled, patting her shoulder.
---
Meanwhile, in Class E.
The fading voices of the group echoed down the hall.
From the doorway of a nearby classroom, a girl with long, straight black hair peeked out, her golden eyes sharp with curiosity.
Her fair skin and elegant features set her apart, but unlike the other students in the bustling high school, her expression carried a deep, lingering exhaustion.
But despite the fatigue in her face, her gaze—locked onto Ryuu—was filled with intrigue.
Yotsuya Miko, a first-year at Soubu High, had developed an unusual ability just a month and a half ago.
She could see things that shouldn't exist.
Ever since then, she had been tormented by spirits—some harmless, some horrifying. And up until now, she had endured it alone.
Today, she had planned to finish cleaning duty early and head straight home.
But then, she overheard that conversation in the hallway.
Ghosts.
She couldn't ignore that word.
Driven by instinct, she leaned out and caught sight of the group.
She recognized them, of course. Even from a different class, it was impossible not to know Hayama, Miura, Yuigahama, Tobe—they were the influential students of the first-years.
She had never spoken to them, nor had any real interaction.
Her condition had made her avoid most social activities. After school, she never lingered—she simply went home.
But for the first time, she found herself watching.
Not at the group, but at Ryuu.
With her heightened sight, she saw what no one else could.
An aura.
A dark, ominous force emanated from Ryuu, almost like a beacon.
Tiny spirits, drawn to the energy, swarmed toward him.
And then—
The moment they touched his aura, they disintegrated.
Like moths to a flame, they were erased in an instant.
"...Amazing."
The words slipped out before she could stop herself.
As laughter rang from the group ahead, Miko listened intently.
She murmured under her breath.
"Is he... Ryuu?"
