Chapter 19: Chapter 19 Slaughter

Chapter -19.

Despite their lingering fear, the villagers muster some courage thanks to the bold actions of Lucien and Gilbert. They begin to fight back with whatever weapons they can grasp.

The young boy whom Lucien had saved earlier shows remarkable bravery; instead of staying back for protection, he rushes forward with a sword, engaging a goblin in battle on equal terms. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the other villagers, who flail their weapons aimlessly upon entering the fray, showcasing their inexperience in proper combat.

Observing the skirmish, Lucien shakes his head. If the battle continues in this manner, most of the villagers will expend their energy before they even reach the goblin camp, which is the primary target of their hunting party.

Just as Lucien considers the situation with concern, a loud shout catches his attention. He turns to see Gilbert swinging his axe widely, knocking several goblins off their feet. "Come at me, you bastards! I'll wipe this monster bloodline of yours from existence!" His roar resonates like a lion's.

"Looks like he's really getting into it," Lucien mutters with a fierce smile, thinking back on how he had already dispatched numerous goblins. Only the archers at the back proved to be a challenge, consistently shooting arrows that injured some members of their group.

If it weren't for Lucien and Gilbert delivering heavy damage to the horde, the villagers would have been overrun by the goblins and forced to flee for their lives.

"Gilbert, we need to do something about those archers at the back," Lucien says as he approaches Gilbert. Without proper cover, he cannot afford to lower his sword, for he might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of goblins. The villagers fight with sheer determination but lack organization, and Lucien has no time to instruct them in combat tactics.

"Argh! Die, you bastard!" Gilbert exclaims as he beheads a goblin and then turns his focus back to Lucien. "What did you say, Lucien?" His gaze shifts quickly to the oncoming goblins.

"I need you to protect me while I take care of those goblins with bows. Can you do that?" Lucien replies. As goblins approach, he thrusts his sword forward, driving it into a goblin's head, which immediately falls lifeless, its body collapsing forward due to its earlier momentum.

As the goblin's corpse drops, Lucien pulls his sword free and looks to Gilbert for an answer. Gilbert replies, "Alright, I trust you to handle those bastards before more of us get hurt." Though he has faith in Lucien, he worries that if something goes wrong, the tide of battle could quickly turn against them.

With that, Gilbert swings his axe in a wide arc, clearing a path for Lucien to move towards the archers. Lucien takes a deep breath and darts through the opening, his eyes locked on the archers. The goblin archers, noticing his sudden advance, halt their attacks and reposition themselves, taking aim at the new threat approaching.

"You think you're safe just because you're hiding in the back, you puny bastards!" Lucien shouts, drawing their focus. One goblin looses an arrow at him, but he expertly dodges it with a quick roll. As he gets closer, he sees the fear reflected in their eyes, which only strengthens his resolve.

The goblins are swift, yet they are no match for Lucien's speed and accuracy. He leaps over a fallen tree trunk and slashes at the nearest goblin, severing its arm and causing its bow to clatter to the ground. The goblin shrieks in agony, clutching the stump where its hand used to be.

"Cover me!" Lucien bellows above the chaos. Gilbert steps into the gap, ready to defend against any goblins that come too close. The villagers momentarily pause their fighting, their eyes drawn to Lucien's audacious move. The archers take advantage of this moment and release more arrows, but Gilbert's intimidating presence results in plenty of missed shots, which frustrates them.

Recognizing an opportunity, Lucien pulls out his bow and starts firing at the goblin archers, his aim true; each arrow finds its target, and one by one, the archers who had been harassing him begin to fall.

Witnessing their ranks diminish, the goblins grow increasingly disorganized and panicked. Lucien's actions grant the villagers a brief respite, encouraging them to regroup, allowing the lightly wounded to step back for first aid and recovery.

Just as Lucien begins to feel a sense of moral victory, the remaining horde suddenly becomes more aggressive, perhaps sensing their impending doom. The remaining goblin archers fire arrows wildly, showing little concern about whether they land any blows.

Gilbert, noting the scattered attention of the goblins, seizes the moment and charges forward with a battle cry. His axe swings in wide arcs, cleaving through any goblins that approach him, his movements reminiscent of a raging bull.

Lucien, unwilling to lag behind Gilbert, spots a goblin attempting to sneak through the trees toward him. With a swift draw of his bow, he sends an arrow straight into the goblin's head, sending it tumbling back.

Seeing the frantic assault, the remaining goblins finally lose their will to fight and try to flee in terror. But Lucien understands the importance of not letting them escape; he retrieves his bow once more and systematically shoots them down one after the other, impressing both the villagers and Gilbert, who remarks, "You've really shocked me with those skills of yours."
