Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Magnemite
Kazuki reached out and grabbed Jirachi's cheeks with both hands, pulling and stretching them like putty.
"Ow ow ow… Kazuki, you can't treat your mommy like this!" Jirachi protested, her voice muffled as she flailed her tiny arms in the air.
Only after pinching her cheeks until they turned red did Kazuki finally let go. The Jirachi rubbed her sore cheeks, her eyes glistening with a thin layer of tears, looking as if she was about to burst into tears at any moment.
"Stop pretending. I still have questions for you."
Kazuki's serious expression stopped Jirachi from squeezing out any more tears. She pouted, her fingers fidgeting as she muttered, "Kazuki's all grown up now, and he doesn't respect his mommy at all…"
"I'll let the Mega Stone thing slide for now…" Kazuki rubbed his aching forehead and continued, "But you need to tell me what's going on with Lairon. Her evolution seems different from Hei's."
"Oh, her? It's normal that she can't take on a human form… It's because she hasn't reached her final evolution stage yet, so the power of the wish hasn't fully manifested. But since she's already started down this path, all Kazuki needs to do is wait patiently for her to evolve again~"
"That's not what I'm asking about!" Seeing Jirachi's crescent-moon eyes and her knowing smile, Kazuki felt his headache worsen:
"I want to know why her typing changed. Normally, Lairon stays Steel and Rock, right?"
Finally adopting a more serious expression, Jirachi rested her chin on her hand and thought for a moment before answering:
"About that… Kazuki should already understand the essence of what's happening to your Pokémon, right? It's based on wishes, the special power Kazuki inherited, and the bond between you and your Pokémon. We can call this phenomenon 'Miracle Evolution.'"
"Based on this principle, it's not hard to see that the state after Miracle Evolution is influenced by the wish that serves as its foundation. For example, the human form is influenced by Kazuki's wish… As for other changes, they can only come from the Pokémon's own wishes~"
Kazuki quickly grasped her meaning, but a new question popped into his head: "Does that mean if I catch other Pokémon in the future, and they undergo Miracle Evolution, they might also end up with unconventional forms because of this?"
However, Jirachi wagged her finger, dismissing his speculation: "It's not that easy… Didn't that Lairon of yours eat your Mega Stone? If I'm not mistaken, the residual energy in the stone became the catalyst for her to break through to that form. And that's only possible because she was already special to begin with."
"In a way, if I hadn't absorbed most of the energy from that stone, Kazuki wouldn't have been lucky enough to meet all the conditions!"
So I should be thanking you for ruining my Mega Stone, huh? Kazuki's expression was one of exasperation, but considering how much important information Jirachi had just shared, he decided to indulge her a little.
"Alright, alright, I was being shortsighted. I didn't understand your good intentions."
He reached out and ruffled her golden hair. Suddenly remembering something, he looked down at Jirachi, who was enjoying the attention, and asked, "By the way, can you stay outside like this all the time now?"
"For this body, yes," Jirachi replied, blinking her eyes.
For this body… Kazuki finally noticed that Jirachi's form had a slight transparency to it, as if it were some kind of illusion.
"My true body is still sleeping inside the white meteorite~ This avatar can only be seen and touched by Kazuki. If you want to meet the real me, Kazuki will have to work harder. I'm looking forward to it too…"
With an angelic smile, Jirachi's avatar waved her tiny hand and dissolved into a shower of starlight, entering Kazuki's body.
"Kazuki."
As Kazuki instinctively placed his hand over his chest where the starlight had entered, he heard Sabrina's voice calling him. It seemed she had finished distributing the food.
"Ah, I'll be right there!" Kazuki called back loudly and hurried over.
…
South of Saffron City, beyond a small stretch of forest, the road leading to Vermilion City was wide and unobstructed, with no mountains or dense forests in the way. It was a straight shot.
After finishing lunch, Kazuki and his group traveled without stopping and finally arrived at the city as the sun dipped below the western mountains, bathing the streets in the orange glow of dusk.
Vermilion City, another major port city in the Kanto region besides Cerulean City, was slightly different in that it didn't have attractions like water ballet performances to draw tourists. However, it still saw a large number of merchant and passenger ships docking for supplies.
The reason was simple: Vermilion City had a highly developed heavy industry system.
The largest shipyard in the Kanto region was located here, and the sprawling industrial complex seemed endless…
This single city supplied nearly 80% of the high-quality steel the League needed each year.
Of course, there was a trade-off. Amid the iron and fire, vast amounts of industrial waste were emitted, staining the once-blue sky with a layer of gray. Many native Pokémon, unable to adapt to the environment, gradually migrated elsewhere. Only a few special Pokémon were actually drawn to the area.
For example, right now, a peculiar spherical creature with a single eye, a gray body, and magnets and screws attached to it floated slowly past Kazuki.
Magnemite, the Magnet Pokémon, a dual Electric and Steel type that fed on electricity.
Due to its unique appearance and physiology, the Pokémon academic community once believed it to be a product of the industrial age. However, recent archaeological discoveries suggested that creatures resembling Magnemite existed as far back as 10,000 years ago, sparking a heated debate in the academic world.
Watching the Magnemite float past them as if they weren't there, Sabrina's eyes glowed with psychic energy. A green light enveloped the Magnemite's body, pulling it toward her. She reached out and grabbed the magnets on either side of its spherical body.
Even though it had been inexplicably grabbed by a stranger, the Magnemite's eyes remained vacant, its large pupils showing no trace of intelligence, let alone fear or anger.
"Magnemite are Pokémon attracted to electrical waves. If I remember correctly, Vermilion City's Gym is an Electric-type Gym. Maybe it can lead us there."
Hearing Kazuki's words, Sabrina released the Magnemite. Just as Kazuki had predicted, the Magnemite wasn't aimlessly drifting—it was moving with purpose in a fixed direction.
Exchanging a glance with Sabrina, the two decisively followed the Magnemite. After about an hour and a half, a tall, square building adorned with the League emblem came into view.
To be honest, the building looked more like a small factory than a Pokémon Gym, which, in a way, was very fitting for Vermilion City.
Pushing open the heavy doors and stepping inside, Kazuki was surprised to find the interior was unexpectedly lively, in stark contrast to the cold, industrial exterior.
Dozens of trainers, presumably also here to challenge the Gym, were running around, sweating profusely as they rummaged through… trash cans?
Kazuki froze at the sight of this bizarre scene until a man in a black work uniform approached, sizing up Kazuki and Sabrina before asking, "Are you here to challenge the Gym too?"
"Yes, I'm Kazuki from Pallet Town. Uh… what are those people doing?"
"It's normal for first-timers not to know," the staff member said, stepping aside and pointing to a barrier of high-voltage electricity at the far end of the room.
"See that electric grid? That's the gate you have to pass through to challenge our Gym Leader. Of course, we're not going to make trainers walk through high-voltage electricity, so the switch to turn off the grid is hidden somewhere here."
"The switch… is it hidden in one of these trash cans, isn't it?"
The staff member didn't answer, but his expression told Kazuki everything he needed to know. Turning back to the scene of trainers frantically searching through hundreds of trash cans, Kazuki couldn't help but twitch his lips.
This Vermilion Gym Leader really had a twisted sense of humor. This was the second most ridiculous Gym challenge he'd ever seen… What? You're asking about the first? That would be the Cerulean Sisters, who just handed out badges for free.
"We're not seriously going to have to search through every trash can, are we?"
Kazuki's expression was troubled. Noticing this, Sabrina stepped forward, about to suggest using her psychic powers to flip all the trash cans at once. However, the Magnemite floating beside them suddenly zipped ahead.
Seeing this, Kazuki's eyes lit up. Of course! Magnemite were sensitive to electrical devices. Finding the switch wouldn't be a problem for it.
"Sabrina, let's follow it." Kazuki grabbed Sabrina's hand, cutting off whatever she was about to say, and the two followed the Magnemite.
As they floated past countless trash cans, Kazuki began to feel uneasy. The Magnemite didn't seem to be heading for any of the trash cans—it was making a beeline for the electric grid itself.
That wouldn't do! Even though Magnemite fed on electricity, it couldn't handle such a high voltage all at once!
Realizing this, Kazuki quickly reached out to stop the Magnemite, but it suddenly accelerated mid-air and slammed into the grid.
In an instant, electricity surged, emitting a blinding light as it flowed into the Magnemite's body, causing it to glow with a blue light.
"Turn off the grid! Hurry—" Kazuki turned and shouted urgently at the staff member, but before he could finish, a loud crackling sound erupted.
The next moment, the entire Vermilion Gym plunged into darkness, accompanied by the screams of the people inside. The only light came from… a glowing blue sphere.
The glowing Magnemite floated quietly in the air and let out a small burp.
