Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Raviel's Invitation
Black lightning darted through the air, weaving between blades of wind and streams of poison.
Despite its massive, ash-gray body, it moved with incredible agility, always finding gaps in the seemingly impenetrable barrage of attacks to slip through.
On the other side, the scene was completely different—Lairon's speed was much slower compared to Hei's, but she didn't need to dodge the attacks flying through the air.
The poison had no effect on her, and the air blades couldn't even leave a scratch on her body.
"Golbat, go stop that dog," Raviel commanded, seeing a Mightyena rapidly closing in. He couldn't let it disrupt their formation.
As he sent his main Pokémon to intercept, he glanced at Professor Shiratani, who was standing there in a daze.
His usually polite tone couldn't help but carry a hint of sarcasm: "Professor Shiratani, if you keep spacing out like this, we might end up discussing our deal in the League's prison."
"Ah, my apologies. It's just that Lairon…" The professor snapped out of his trance, realizing how dangerous it was to lose focus at such a critical moment.
He pushed aside his thoughts about the peculiar black Lairon and returned to the battle.
By now, Golbat had already glided above Hei, following its trainer's orders.
It didn't give up its aerial advantage to engage in close combat but instead flapped its wings, sending out air blades.
While such attacks weren't likely to pose a significant threat to the Mightyena, they could at least keep her occupied while ensuring Golbat's safety.
Feeling the gust of wind from above, Hei dug her claws into the ground, skidding to a halt. She lowered her head, and the air blade grazed her back, cutting off a few strands of gray fur.
Narrowly avoiding the sneak attack, Hei raised her head, glaring at the purple bat hovering high above. Her sharp, guillotine-like fangs bared as she growled, "Grrr! (Come down here and fight me!)"
In response to her taunt, Golbat simply flapped its wings again, releasing more air blades, its eyes seemingly mocking her: "Squeak, squeak. (I'm not coming down. What are you gonna do about it?)"
As the two Pokémon faced off—one in the air, the other on the ground—Kazuki's voice suddenly rang out from behind: "Hei, you can use that thing now!"
Hearing this, the Mightyena immediately jerked her head upward, opening her jaws wide. Golbat didn't pay much attention. It wasn't confident it could defeat the dog below, but as long as it stayed cautious and didn't get too close, it could easily dodge any attempt to pounce. What kind of long-range attack could that dog possibly have?
This thought lasted until it saw the mysterious spherical object being flung out of the Mightyena's mouth. What was that… a Poké Ball?
"Idiot! That's a Voltorb! Dodge it!" Raviel, with his sharp eyes, instantly recognized the true nature of the flying object. But his warning came too late. The Voltorb had already begun charging electricity the moment Hei tossed it, and as it flew through the air, it unleashed a Thunderbolt.
The golden lightning struck the unsuspecting Golbat, which writhed in pain from the super-effective attack. With a Wing Attack, it managed to knock the Voltorb away before it could do more damage.
A red light flashed as Raviel recalled his Golbat, which was on the verge of collapse.
His gaze shifted to the black-haired boy who had given the command.
Was that tactic his idea? And from the sound of it, they had planned to use it on us directly…
Meanwhile, Lairon, despite being a large target and the focus of numerous attacks, continued to press forward without slowing down.
An Eevee perched on her head, and together they bulldozed through the opposition.
A Koffing tried to block their path, but a single Iron Head sent it flying dozens of meters away, deflated and leaking gas.
Noticing Lairon's terrifying destructive power, even Fire-type Pokémon like Houndoom temporarily halted their attacks on Lt. Surge's Electric-types, turning their attention to the black-armored beast.
They unleashed Flamethrowers, hoping to exploit the Steel-type's weakness and quickly take her down.
However, before the scorching flames could hit Lairon, the Eevee on her back extended its arms, creating a hexagonal barrier in front of them—the move Protect.
The flames licked at the transparent shield, causing it to tremble slightly, but it held firm, blocking all the chaotic energy attacks from the outside. With just Eevee's Protect, they managed to withstand the onslaught.
However, Protect couldn't be used consecutively, and the enemy's next wave of attacks was already incoming.
Several Ekans and Arbok burrowed into the ground, rapidly advancing underground with the move Dig—a Ground-type attack that could deal heavy damage to Steel-types.
Even though Eevee and Lairon didn't get along well under normal circumstances, Eevee couldn't help but ask, "Eevee? (Are you going to be okay with this?)"
"Lair, Lair. (Don't worry, this distance should be enough.)" Lairon snorted, tensing her body and lifting her front half off the ground. Her heavy iron feet began to gather a thick, earthy yellow energy.
The move Bulldoze, which she had learned during her time at the Saffron Gym, had now evolved into a more advanced version after her evolution, thanks to her significantly increased weight and deeper understanding of type energy.
"Gym Leader Lt. Surge, tell your Pokémon not to resist Sabrina's Psychic later," Kazuki whispered to the tall man beside him.
"Huh? Oh." Although he didn't fully understand the boy's reasoning, Lt. Surge had grown accustomed to following Kazuki's tactics during the battle and instinctively complied.
Raviel, who was slightly slower to react than Kazuki, saw the terrifying power gathering beneath Lairon's feet and quickly called his other Golbat back to his side. He grabbed onto its leg, pulling Professor Shiratani up with him.
Following his lead, the other Rocket elites also took to the air, mounting their flying Pokémon. They were all too familiar with the move that could clear the battlefield in an instant, shaking the very earth beneath them—
Earthquake!
Lairon's feet slammed into the ground, and the moment they made contact, cracks filled with earth energy radiated outward at incredible speed, engulfing the entire battlefield.
Even those who had taken to the air with their Pokémon or through Psychic powers could feel the entire factory trembling under the force of the attack. Dust rained down from the high ceiling, and cracks began to form on the walls, threatening to collapse at any moment.
In this single strike, the Ekans and Arbok that had burrowed underground were directly hit by the Earthquake, likely already defeated. The majority of the Poison- and Fire-type Pokémon on the Rocket and Evolution Association's side, already weak to Ground-type moves, were almost completely wiped out.
Only the flying bat Pokémon, the floating Koffing line, and a few others on the outskirts of the Earthquake's range managed to survive.
On Kazuki's side, Lt. Surge's Electric-types, also weak to Ground moves, were unharmed thanks to Sabrina's Psychic keeping them afloat.
With Lairon's "one-button clear," the once uncertain battle quickly turned in their favor.
Raviel looked down with a somewhat troubled expression, turning to Professor Shiratani: "Professor, what should we do now?"
Although his words sounded like a question, there was no trace of frustration in Raviel's tone.
He had always considered retreat as an option, but to maintain the future cooperation between their organizations, he needed the professor to willingly make the same decision.
However… the battle had turned against them much faster than he had anticipated.
Realizing that if they continued to fight, not only would they fail to complete the mission, but they might also be captured, Professor Shiratani gritted his teeth and made the decision: "Let's retreat. But… can we take that device with us?"
He pointed to the Pokémon transfer device, whose outer metal layer had already been damaged by the Earthquake.
But Raviel quickly shook his head: "I'm afraid not. If it were smaller, we might have a chance, but something that big? My Golbat wouldn't be able to handle it~"
The Poison-type Pokémon began spraying acid upward, corroding a large hole in the sturdy ceiling.
Raviel grabbed onto Golbat's leg, waving down at Kazuki and his group with a smile: "Well then, esteemed guests of the League, we'll have to excuse ourselves for now~ And you, kid, you've got potential. How about joining Team Rocket?"
"If you come down, maybe we can discuss the terms of joining Team Rocket," Kazuki replied, looking directly into Raviel's eyes.
Golbat swiftly dodged to the side, avoiding a Thunderbolt attack.
Raviel theatrically patted his chest as if relieved, saying with a hint of regret, "I think I'll pass. Your friends are a bit too enthusiastic… Hopefully, we'll meet again someday to discuss something as private as salary.
"Well then, everyone, goodbye~"
"Damn it! Aren't we going after them?" Lt. Surge's face was filled with frustration as he watched the Rocket and Evolution Association members escape through the hole in the ceiling. His eyebrows furrowed, and his voice was tinged with urgency.
"Most of our Pokémon can only stay airborne with Sabrina's Psychic. Chasing them into an aerial battle would put us at a disadvantage. Besides…" Kazuki explained, but even as he spoke, he was already sprinting toward the large device in the distance. Before the Rockets had flown away, he had noticed the white-coated researcher pressing a button, causing the device's energy tubes to fill with erratic currents. The entire structure began to shake violently, as if some self-destruct mechanism had been activated.
"Magnemite, I'm counting on you!" Realizing he might not make it in time, Kazuki hurled a Poké Ball with all his strength. Magnemite emerged from the ball and immediately attached itself to the machine.
The chaotic currents, as if drawn by some force, surged into Magnemite's body, causing its gray surface to glow with a blue light.
The crackling noise gradually subsided, and after "feeding" on the electricity, Magnemite let out a satisfied burp.
The massive device, now drained of power, was spared from self-destruction.
"I'm not sure what this thing does, but since they were willing to destroy it even while retreating, it must be important. We'll leave it to the League to investigate," Kazuki said, touching the device's outer shell to confirm it was no longer active.
