Chapter 3: Chapter 3: The Library Heist
The academy library was a fortress of knowledge, guarded by stern librarians and enchanted wards. Breaking in was a terrible idea. But Skully, being Skully, had a plan.
*"Master, trust me,"* Skully whispered as we crouched behind a bookshelf. *"This is going to be epic."*
"Epic or suicidal?" I muttered, glancing at the librarian's desk. Mrs. Thornleaf was known for her sharp eyes and even sharper temper. If she caught us, we'd be scrubbing potion cauldrons for a month.
Skully ignored me and scurried forward, his tiny bones clattering softly against the stone floor. He reached into his ribcage (yes, his ribcage) and pulled out a small vial of glowing liquid. *"Distraction potion,"* he explained. *"Courtesy of the alchemy lab."*
Before I could stop him, he hurled the vial toward the far end of the library. It shattered, releasing a cloud of shimmering smoke that formed into the shape of a dancing dragon. Mrs. Thornleaf's head snapped up, and she bolted toward the commotion, muttering about "reckless students."
*"Now's our chance!"* Skully hissed, grabbing my hand and dragging me toward the restricted section. I didn't even know skeletons could grab things, but Skully was full of surprises.
We slipped past the wards (Skully claimed he "knew a trick") and entered the forbidden archives. The air was thick with the scent of old parchment and magic. Shelves stretched to the ceiling, filled with ancient tomes and scrolls.
*"What are we looking for?"* I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
*"The *Tome of Summoning Secrets*,"* Skully replied, scanning the shelves. *"It's got all the advanced techniques they don't teach in class. With this, we can unlock my true potential!"*
"Your true potential?" I raised an eyebrow. "You mean there's more to you than being a tiny, chatty skeleton?"
Skully grinned (which was unsettling, given his lack of facial muscles). *"Oh, Master, you have no idea."*
We found the tome on a high shelf, just out of reach. Skully climbed onto my shoulders and grabbed it, but as he did, the shelf began to tremble. A low, rumbling growl filled the air.
"Uh, Skully?" I said, my voice trembling. "What's that noise?"
*"Oh, right,"* Skully said casually. *"The library guardian. I forgot about that."*
"You *forgot*?!" I hissed as a massive, shadowy figure emerged from the darkness. It looked like a cross between a lion and a dragon, with glowing red eyes and teeth the size of my arm.
*"Run!"* Skully shouted, clutching the tome as we bolted for the exit. The guardian roared, shaking the shelves and sending books flying in every direction.
We burst out of the restricted section, narrowly avoiding Mrs. Thornleaf's wrath, and didn't stop running until we were safely back in my dorm room. I collapsed onto the bed, gasping for breath, while Skully perched on the desk, looking far too pleased with himself.
*"See, Master?"* he said, patting the tome. *"Told you it would be epic."*
I groaned. "Next time, remind me to ask for details before agreeing to one of your plans."
