Chapter 51: Chapter 51: The Assassin’s Inheritance
"Can you send us to that zombie-fighting world?" Kenway asked.
"Of course. As a businessman, my customers' requests always take priority. But I'm curious—why not choose an ordinary futuristic world? Instead, you're opting for a world that might be engulfed in war. You don't have to answer if you don't want to," Ryan said, his curiosity piqued.
Kenway smiled, seemingly expecting this question. "First of all, from the plants you just showed me and what you've said, I can tell that you still have a connection—perhaps even a long-term one—with the zombie-fighting world. That means it can't be all bad."
"Secondly, I spent a long time erasing my wanted status in the Caribbean. I imagine the personnel registry in the future world will be much stricter, making it difficult for me and my daughter to blend in. However, in the Plants vs. Zombies world, you, the store owner, can vouch for me and help us integrate."
"Third, you already know my skill set. What do you think I could do in a peaceful world? There's no place for people like me there."
"And finally," Kenway's expression turned serious, "sometimes, the living are more terrifying than the undead. At least in a world fighting zombies, there are fewer living threats. That kind of world should be far simpler to navigate."
Hearing Kenway's reasoning, Ryan nodded, understanding his perspective. "Do you have anything else to bring? I'll give you a few hours to pack up. Once you leave for another world, coming back won't be easy. After you're ready, just recite the name of my Tim Hortans Grocery Store in your mind, find any door, and open it to come back here."
Kenway nodded. "I'll be back in an hour." With that, he called his daughter over, took her hand, and left.
Ryan watched them disappear through the doorway before shifting his attention back to his mutant dragon grass. The fruit it had produced pulsed slowly like a heartbeat, and he had a strong feeling that he was about to cultivate a brand-new type of plant—something entirely unique to him.
Half an hour later, a misty glow flickered at the door, and Kenway returned with his daughter. He was dressed in full assassin attire—a leather-armored hooded outfit—and carried a large bundle wrapped in a tablecloth. His daughter, also equipped with a small bag, clutched a stuffed bear in her arms.
"You're back already?" Ryan said in surprise. He hadn't expected them to be ready in just half an hour.
Kenway shrugged. "For safety reasons, I've always been prepared to leave at a moment's notice. Most of our things were already packed. I just needed to gather them and go."
Ryan nodded. Without wasting time, he retrieved a parchment and drafted a contract. According to the terms, Kenway would share all the knowledge he possessed in exchange for Ryan transporting him and his daughter to the Plants vs. Zombies world.
Once the contract was signed, a blood-red mist rose from Kenway's head, forming a thick, red-covered book that landed on the bookshelf. The title read: Kenway's Assassin's Creed.
Ryan glanced at the book, satisfied. He then took out a blank sheet of paper, jotted something down, and handed it to Kenway.
"The leader of Dave's world is one of my most trusted partners. This is a letter addressed to him, explaining your situation. I've asked him to look after you, and I've also mentioned that you can stay in my house there. I rarely live in that world, so it's better if someone occupies the place rather than letting it sit empty. Lastly, please pass along my greetings."
Kenway took the letter, nodding in gratitude. Ryan then opened the space portal to the Plants vs. Zombies world.
At that moment, the system's voice echoed in his mind:
— Teleporting two individuals to another world:Adult male, minimal extraordinary power, cost: 15 offset points.Minor female, no extraordinary power, cost: 5 offset points.Ryan was momentarily stunned. There's a fee for this?
As Kenway and his daughter stepped through the portal—Kenway humming the tune of Farewell Wine—a new notification appeared.
— Massive change detected in guest world's fate.
— Multiple key individuals affected.
— Overall world structure remains mostly unchanged.
— You have earned 35 offset points.
Ryan's offset points jumped to 39, leaving him momentarily speechless. However, before celebrating, he needed to check the teleportation expenses. If points were deducted unexpectedly in the future, it would be frustrating.
It took him several minutes of scanning through the system's documentation, but he finally found the relevant clauses:Teleporting individuals between worlds requires offset points to ensure precision and safety. The amount depends on the energy level of the individuals being transported.Teleportation is only possible if the shopkeeper has already established a portal to the target world. The store owner can check the exact energy cost before initiating teleportation. (Ryan sighed. I should have checked this earlier!)No credit is allowed in the store. Contracts only take effect if the transaction can be completed immediately.Ryan chuckled. At least the Tim Hortans Grocery Store wasn't a loan shark. It prevented him from being taken advantage of and ensured fair transactions.
Now holding 39 offset points, Ryan decided to invest them into enhancing his abilities. Strength was what he lacked most at the moment.
His first target: Kenway's Assassin's Creed. Learning all the knowledge contained within it required just 3 offset points. This included combat techniques, multiple foreign languages, sailing, stealth, crafting various tools, and more. As expected, non-magical skills were relatively cheap.
Next was Hawkeye, a skill that developed one's sixth sense. However, since Ryan lacked the necessary genes from Kenway's world, he had two options:Option 1: Modify his genes to acquire the same Hawkeye ability as Kenway. (Cost: 5 offset points.)Option 2: Use his own magic to substitute for the missing bloodline. This version would enhance his perception but wouldn't be as effective as the original. (Cost: 3 offset points.)Lastly, there was the Leap of Faith—an ability allowing one to survive any fall as long as they landed in a haystack. However, since it required altering the world's physical laws, it came with a hefty price tag of 300 offset points.
Ryan weighed his choices and decided to go with both the Assassin's Creed knowledge package and the magically adapted version of Hawkeye.
After spending 6 offset points, he sat down as the knowledge was transferred into his mind over ten minutes. By the time the process was complete, he had fully mastered the skills.
Standing up, he flexed his fingers, eager to test his newfound abilities. Having watched countless videos of Assassin's Creed in his past life, he had always admired the protagonist's elegant movements. Now, he finally had a chance to replicate them himself.
With a grin, he stepped forward, ready to put his new skills to the test.
Note: Highly recommend listening to Farewell Wine, the ending song from Assassin's Creed Black Flag.
