Chapter 12: Chapter #12
The Demon Brothers were both Chunin-level opponents, and Sasuke was already struggling to handle just one of them.
Two enemies? He didn't stand a chance!
The problem was, the Demon Brothers were closing in on their target—Tazuna. Even if Sasuke managed to hold one of them back, the other would still reach their mark. Tazuna was about to be taken out.
From his hiding spot, Kakashi was preparing to intervene.
However…
Just as the situation was reaching its breaking point, a strong, resolute voice echoed through the air.
"Eight Gates Formation—First Gate!"
"Gate of Opening… OPEN!"
As the words left his lips, Tatsuya felt his entire body grow exponentially lighter, his movements sharper and more precise.
[The First Gate removes the brain's natural limiters, allowing the user to utilize 100% of their physical capabilities. It dramatically increases speed and strength, but at the cost of bodily strain.]
With newfound agility, Tatsuya snatched up a length of chain from the ground and launched himself toward the Demon Brothers. In the blink of an eye, he was beneath them, moving so fast they barely had time to react.
The sight shocked everyone. Even the Demon Brothers themselves were caught off guard—how had he closed the distance so quickly?
Kakashi, observing from the shadows, was just as stunned.
"This… this is…"
As someone who had trained alongside Might Guy for years, Kakashi recognized the technique instantly. His eyes widened.
Boom! Boom!
Before either of the Demon Brothers could react, Tatsuya delivered two devastating kicks, sending them both hurtling into the air.
But it wasn't over yet.
Tatsuya immediately followed up with the Leaf Rising Wind, launching himself into the air after them. His movements were swift, precise, unstoppable.
Tap! Tap! Tap!
With quick footwork mid-air, he maneuvered himself above them. Then, with a flick of his wrist, he wrapped them tightly in his chains and began to spin at high speed, dragging them toward the ground in a spiraling dive.
[This is the first individual technique of the Eight Gates—Front Lotus!]
Boom!
The impact shook the ground, sending a thick cloud of dust billowing into the sky. The force of the landing made the earth tremble.
A sharp whistling sound cut through the air as Tatsuya leaped from the crater, landing gracefully at a safe distance. He was unscathed, his breathing steady.
[The advantage of an enormous chakra reserve—he could sustain the technique without suffering the usual backlash.]
The dust settled, revealing the Demon Brothers sprawled on the ground, unconscious and battered, their bodies barely moving.
Sasuke, Naruto, and Tazuna could only stare in disbelief.
"What… what jutsu was that?" Sasuke muttered, his voice filled with awe.
Before Kakashi could respond, his voice cut in from behind them.
"That wasn't ninjutsu."
Startled, Naruto and Tazuna whipped around. Their jaws dropped as they saw Kakashi standing there, completely unharmed.
"But—how? We saw them kill you!" Naruto stammered, looking from Kakashi to the bloody pool on the ground, which was now just a shattered log.
"It was a substitution," Naruto muttered under his breath before grinning. "Man, Kakashi-sensei, you really scared us!"
Kakashi gave a lazy shrug. "Had to make sure I got a good read on them."
Meanwhile, the dust fully cleared, revealing the Demon Brothers in a heap on the ground, completely unconscious.
"Chunin-level indeed," Kakashi mused. "Even after taking that hit, they're still breathing."
Tazuna let out a heavy sigh of relief. "I… I really thought I was done for." He turned to Tatsuya, his eyes filled with a newfound respect. Before, he had doubted Tatsuya's ability, dismissing him as just another kid. But now? Now, he knew better.
He had been proven wrong in the most dramatic way possible.
Naruto was the first to break the silence.
"Tatsuya, that was amazing! You took them out like it was nothing!"
Hearing this, Sasuke and Kakashi's eyes also turned to Tatsuya, their curiosity piqued.
"Kakashi-sensei," Sasuke asked, still processing what he had seen, "you said Tatsuya used… taijutsu?"
Kakashi nodded. "That was a secret technique from the Eight Gates—Front Lotus."
"The Eight Gates?" Naruto and Sasuke said in unison.
Naruto turned to Kakashi, his eyes full of questions. "What is the Eight Gates?"
Kakashi crossed his arms. "The Eight Gates is a forbidden taijutsu technique. It allows the user to break past their natural limits, achieving power beyond what the human body should be capable of."
"Forbidden technique?" Sasuke muttered, staring at Tatsuya with a new intensity. He had just witnessed Tatsuya take out two skilled assassins in seconds. He wasn't just strong—he was on an entirely different level.
Disbelief and admiration swirled inside Sasuke. He had worked so hard, trained relentlessly, and yet… compared to what he had just seen, his own strength felt insignificant.
After answering Naruto's question, Kakashi turned to Tatsuya, his expression serious.
"Tatsuya, be honest with me—who taught you this technique?"
As he asked, an image flashed through his mind. A man clad in a green jumpsuit, radiating energy and determination.
Might Guy.
As far as Kakashi knew, Guy was the only one in Konoha who had mastered the Eight Gates and was capable of teaching it.
And as for Rock Lee, Kakashi had already seen how his training was progressing. Lee had opened the Fifth Gate during the Chunin Exams, and even the Fourth Gate inflicted serious damage on his body.
Kakashi had scolded Guy about it back then, warning him of the dangers.
So how had Tatsuya learned it?
Tatsuya met Kakashi's gaze and, without hesitation, spoke the truth.
"I taught myself."
Four simple words.
Everyone was left speechless.
Especially Kakashi. He had trained alongside Guy for years, witnessed the grueling path he had taken, the struggles, the setbacks. And even then, Guy's knowledge had been passed down from his father before him.
And yet, here was Tatsuya—self-taught.
Even if he had only unlocked the First Gate, the fact that he had done it on his own was nothing short of extraordinary.
"You taught yourself?"
Kakashi let out a quiet breath, his visible eye narrowing in thought. The Eight Gates technique was originally sealed within the Book of Seals. Aside from Might Guy, barely anyone had ever trained in it, let alone mastered it.
'The Eight Gates are not only incredibly difficult to pursue, but they require sheer fucking will and relentless physical training.
Without extreme discipline and perseverance, mastering them is nearly impossible!'
That was precisely why so few shinobi even attempted to learn the technique. It wasn't just about suffering through intense training—without a natural talent for taijutsu, one's progress would always be limited.
If not for Guy and Lee, who had no aptitude for ninjutsu or genjutsu, no one would have even bothered with the Eight Gates.
Seeing Kakashi's puzzled look, Tatsuya decided to come clean.
"Sensei," he said calmly, "the night Mizuki tricked Naruto into stealing the Book of Seals… Naruto and I took a peek at it out of curiosity."
Kakashi's brow twitched slightly. So that's where Naruto had learned the Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu… The pieces were starting to come together.
Even so, he found it hard to believe.
"You're saying you just flipped through the book… and memorized the training method for the Eight Gates?"
Tatsuya nodded. "I only skimmed it, but I retained the key details. I managed to open the First Gate within a few days."
A sharp inhale.
Kakashi barely stopped himself from exhaling a whistle. His eye darkened with shock.
'This kind of talent is beyond extraordinary…'
Even Guy had taken years of dedicated training to master the Gates, guided step by step by his father. Yet here was Tatsuya, self-taught, breaking through the first limit in days.
If Kakashi knew Tatsuya could already open the Third Gate, he would probably have been speechless.
Next to him, Naruto scratched his head, looking bewildered.
"Tatsuya, didn't we both read the same stuff that night?" he asked. "How come you learned something completely different?!"
"I was curious about the technique," Tatsuya shrugged. "The mission's been kinda boring these past few days, so I decided to give it a try."
Naruto's mouth fell open. He felt like he had been hit with a big rock. He had nearly broken his back trying to master the Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu… and now, here was Tatsuya, casually unlocking some crazy taijutsu technique like it was nothing.
Sasuke, arms crossed, remained silent, but his narrowed eyes betrayed the storm of emotions within. His fists clenched at his sides.
Kakashi sighed and shook his head. "Tatsuya, this technique is dangerous. You shouldn't keep pushing your body like this."
"Don't worry, Sensei," Tatsuya reassured him. "I know my limits. As long as I don't open the last five gates, my body won't suffer any major damage."
"That may be true," Kakashi said, his voice lowering. "But even the first three gates put an enormous strain on the body. If you use them recklessly, it will catch up to you sooner or later."
"I understand. I'll be careful," Tatsuya promised. "I'll try not to rely on it too much."
"That's for the best." Kakashi gave a small nod of approval. Then, his voice softened. "That said… you did well today."
Tatsuya blinked.
"In the face of an enemy, you stayed calm, analyzed the situation, and struck at the right moment. That's exactly what a shinobi should do."
His gaze shifted to Sasuke. "You, too. You understood the mission and focused on protecting the target."
Sasuke remained composed, but his chin lifted slightly at the praise.
Then, Kakashi's gaze landed on Naruto.
"...Naruto."
Naruto stiffened. He could already tell he wasn't about to get the same praise as the others.
"You froze." Kakashi's voice wasn't harsh, but firm. "If this had been a real battle, you might have died."
Naruto winced.
"I wasn't trying to scare you," Kakashi continued. "But this is the reality of being a shinobi. If you don't improve, next time, there might not be someone there to save you."
Naruto looked down, his fists tightening. The words stung. But what hurt more was the fact that he knew Kakashi was right.
This was his first real fight… and he had hesitated. He had been scared.
But what frustrated him the most… was that Tatsuya had stepped in to protect him.
That wasn't how it was supposed to be.
He clenched his teeth, determination burning in his chest. [Next time… I won't be afraid! I won't be left behind!]
Just then, Sasuke scoffed.
"You didn't even get hurt, coward."
Naruto's head snapped up, rage flaring in his eyes. "Sasuke, you bastard—!"
He lunged forward, but Tatsuya smoothly stepped in front of him, stopping him with a hand to the chest.
"Let it go, Naruto." Tatsuya's voice was calm. "If you're really mad, don't waste your energy yelling."
Naruto scowled. "Then what do you want me to do? Just take it?!"
"No," Tatsuya said simply. "Prove him wrong."
Naruto blinked.
"You didn't do great this time. But next time, fight harder. Make sure there's no reason for him to call you a coward again."
Naruto stared at him for a long moment, then exhaled sharply. The tension in his shoulders loosened just a bit. "...Fine."
Seeing this, Kakashi's lips curled slightly beneath his mask. Tatsuya had a strange way of handling things, but he had the right mindset.
Even Tazuna seemed surprised at how mature he was.
Meanwhile, Kakashi turned his attention back to the unconscious Demon Brothers. He quickly secured them to a tree before slapping one of them lightly on the cheek, waking him up.
As the man groggily regained consciousness, Kakashi spoke.
"You two are the Demon Brothers of the Hidden Mist—known for fighting to the death without hesitation." His tone was unreadable. "So tell me… who sent you?"
The leader of the two scowled. "Our plan was flawless… how did you even detect us?"
He knew that if Kakashi hadn't anticipated the attack, there would have been no chance to escape with a mere Substitution Jutsu.
Before Kakashi could answer, Tatsuya stepped forward.
"It wasn't that complicated," he said casually. "You guys gave yourselves away."
Kakashi arched a brow. "Oh?"
At this, Naruto, Sasuke, and even Tazuna turned to Tatsuya in surprise. How had he noticed something that even they hadn't?
Even the Demon Brothers looked startled.
A fledgling genin had caught onto them?
They all waited for Tatsuya's answer, curiosity burning in their eyes.
