Chapter 10: Chapter 10: A Day Off in the Village
The morning sun streamed through the windows of Tetsuo's shop, casting a warm glow over the cluttered shelves and neatly arranged tea sets. Ren sat at the counter, sipping a cup of tea while Tetsuo bustled around, preparing for the day's business. The twins, Hina and Sayo, were already outside, their laughter echoing through the open door.
Hayate stood near the doorway, his arms crossed and his gaze fixed on Ren. He had been quiet all morning, his thoughts heavy. The sight of the village preparing for the holiday brought back memories—some fond, others painful.
"I hope Ren can have moments like this," Hayate thought, his expression softening. "Even before the First Ninja War, kids have been sent to the battlefield, trained to kill before they even understood what it meant to live. He's still so young… He deserves these little moments, at least for now."
Tetsuo paused, glancing at Ren with a thoughtful expression. "Ren, I won't be able to train you today. The shop's going to be busy with the holiday crowd, and I need to keep an eye on things."
Ren nodded, trying to hide his disappointment. "I understand. I can help out here if you need me."
Tetsuo shook his head, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "No need for that. It's a holiday, and you've been working hard. Go out with the twins and enjoy yourself. You've earned it."
Ren blinked, surprised by the suggestion. "Are you sure? I don't want to—"
Tetsuo cut him off with a wave of his hand. "I'm sure. Besides, those two could use someone to keep them out of trouble. Consider it your mission for the day."
Before Ren could respond, Sayo poked her head through the door, her grin wide and mischievous. "Did we hear someone say 'mission'? Come on, Ren! The village is waiting!"
Hina appeared beside her, her expression calm but her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Don't worry, Grandpa. We'll take good care of him."
Tetsuo sighed, though there was a hint of fondness in his voice. "Just try not to cause too much trouble, alright?"
Sayo saluted dramatically. "No promises!"
With that, the twins dragged Ren out of the shop and into the bustling streets of the village. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and the smell of street food. Colorful banners hung from the buildings, and children ran through the streets, their faces painted and their hands full of sweets.
Ren hesitated for a moment, still unsure about taking a day off, but the twins didn't give him a chance to protest.
Sayo: (grinning) "Come on, Ren! You've been training nonstop. You deserve a break!"
Hina: (smirking) "And besides, you need to experience a real village holiday. It's tradition."
Ren finally gave in, allowing the twins to lead him through the lively streets. For the first time in weeks, he felt the tension in his shoulders ease. Maybe a day off wasn't such a bad idea.
As Ren, Hina, and Sayo wandered through the village, they stumbled upon a group of academy students gathered near a food stall. Three older boys were shoving a smaller kid, their laughter loud and cruel. Ren didn't recognize them, but their aggressive demeanor made it clear they were trouble.
The tallest of the three, a muscular boy with a cocky grin, shoved the smaller kid again. "Come on, hand it over! You don't need it anyway."
The smaller kid, trembling, tried to protest, but the bully just laughed, his voice mocking. "What's the matter? Too scared to fight back?"
Another boy, lean and quick with a sly grin, joined in. "Maybe he'll cry for his mommy!"
The third, a stocky and quiet boy, chuckled along, clearly following the lead of the other two.
"Ugh, not those guys again. They're always causing trouble."
Sayo grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Let's teach them a lesson!"
Ren hesitated, remembering Tetsuo's request to keep the twins from causing trouble "Wait, maybe we can talk to them first. We don't need to fight."
Hina raised an eyebrow, her tone sharp. "Afraid, Ren? They're just bullies. They won't listen to words."
Ren frowned, his voice defensive. "I'm not afraid. I just don't want to make things worse."
Before they could decide what to do, a voice called out from behind them, confident and bold.
"Hey! Leave him alone!"
The group turned to see a boy with spiky black hair and sharp gray eyes striding toward them, his hands in his pockets and a confident smirk on his face. The tallest bully sneered, clearly unimpressed.
"Oh, look. It's the academy's resident loudmouth. What are you gonna do, Kaito? Cry about it?"
Kaito's smirk didn't waver. "Nah. I was thinking more along the lines of kicking your butt."
The tallest bully lunged at Kaito, but Kaito dodged the punch with ease, countering with a swift kick that sent him stumbling back. The other two bullies joined in, and suddenly Kaito was outnumbered.
Kaito grinned, his voice teasing. "Three against one? Real brave, guys."
Despite his confidence, Kaito was struggling. The bullies' combined strength and speed made it hard for him to keep up. He managed to land a few hits, but the odds were against him.
Sayo grinned, her energy infectious. "Looks like he could use some help."
Hina nodded, her expression calm but determined. "Let's go."
The twins jumped into the fray. Hina took on the lean, quick bully with precise strikes, her movements efficient and controlled. Sayo went after the stocky one with her usual aggressive style, her laughter ringing out as she dodged his clumsy attacks.
Ren hesitated for a moment, his mind racing. He wasn't very pleased with the idea of kicking some ten-year-old kids' asses. Sure, they were bullies, but they were still just kids—kids who probably didn't know any better. Fighting them felt unnecessary, like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
But then he glanced at Hina and Sayo, who were already moving to help Kaito. The twins were his responsibility, at least for today, and he couldn't let them handle this alone. Tetsuo had asked him to keep them out of trouble, and standing by while they jumped into a fight wasn't exactly keeping them safe.
The tallest bully turned toward him, his sneer full of malice. "What's the matter, new kid? You gonna cry too?"
Ren sidestepped the punch and delivered a quick strike to the bully's side, sending him sprawling. The bully growled, getting back to his feet, but Ren was ready.
Kaito grinned, his voice full of approval. "Not bad, new guy!"
The fight didn't last long. Between Kaito's agility, the twins' teamwork, and Ren's precision, the bullies were quickly overwhelmed. They scrambled to their feet, cursing as they ran off.
The tallest bully shouted over his shoulder, his voice full of bravado. "This isn't over, Kaito!"
Kaito called after them, his tone mocking. "Yeah, yeah. Run along, losers!"
As the dust settled, Kaito turned to Ren and the twins, his grin wide and unapologetic.
"Thanks for the backup. You guys aren't half bad."
Sayo grinned, her hands on her hips. "Backup? We did most of the work!"
Hina rolled her eyes, her tone dry. "Ignore her. You're Kaito, right? From the academy?"
Kaito nodded, his sharp eyes studying them. "That's me. And you're the twins. Everyone knows you two."
He turned to Ren, his smirk returning. "And you're the new guy. Ren, right?"
Ren nodded, a small smile forming. "Yeah. Nice to meet you."
Kaito's grin widened. "Same here. You've got some moves. We should spar sometime."
Ren's smile grew. "I'd like that."
As they walked away from the scene, Ren's thoughts drifted back to the fight. His body felt different—lighter, faster, more responsive. He flexed his fingers, recalling how easily he'd dodged the bully's punch and countered with a strike. It wasn't anything flashy, but it was effective.
"I'm getting faster," Ren thought, a flicker of satisfaction crossing his mind. "A few months ago, I would've been too slow to react. Now, it's almost instinct."
"I'm still nowhere near where I need to be," Ren admitted to himself, his smile fading slightly. "But at least I'm not completely useless anymore."
