Chapter 37: Chapter 37: The First Mission
"Jiraiya, let's go buy some ninja tools."
As night fell, Tsunade finally seemed satisfied after an endless shopping spree.
Jiraiya and his shadow clone were now covered in bags from head to toe.
It occurred to him that if he ever managed to win Tsunade over, mastering the Shadow Clone Jutsu would be a necessity. Otherwise, there was no way he could carry all her bags.
He even suspected that Tobirama Senju might have created the Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu after accompanying his girlfriend on a shopping trip.
"Do you really need all these clothes? Can you even wear them all?" Jiraiya asked curiously.
"Buying and wearing are two completely different things. Who said you have to wear everything you buy?" Tsunade retorted.
Jiraiya was at a loss for words. Rich people truly live in another world, he thought.
Tsunade grabbed Jiraiya's hand and started leading him toward the ninja tool street.
Jiraiya could clearly feel that Tsunade's affection for him was growing.
If this had been in the past, touching Tsunade's hand without her permission would have resulted in him being chased halfway across the village.
But now, Tsunade was holding his hand of her own accord. That was progress—a big one.
He was one step closer to achieving his small goal.
As they entered the ninja tool street, the bustling crowds dwindled noticeably.
This was because ordinary citizens weren't allowed in, only ninja could access this area.
The shops here were almost exclusively run by prominent clans of Konoha. There wasn't a single civilian-owned store.
This was due to the fact that the metals required to craft tools like shuriken were considered strategic resources. Civilians simply didn't have the means to obtain them. Only the great ninja clans had access.
Each shop bore the emblem of its respective clan: the Shimura Clan, the Sarutobi Clan, the Yamanaka Clan, the Akimichi Clan...
The largest shop, however, belonged to the Uchiha Clan.
Jiraiya looked around but didn't spot a shop belonging to the Senju Clan.
At first, he found this odd, but soon the reason became apparent.
The Senju Clan had dwindled to just a few members. There was no one left to run a shop, let alone craft shuriken.
If the Senju still produced ninja tools, Tsunade wouldn't need to drag him here in the first place.
"Let's go to the Akimichi Clan's shop," Tsunade suggested.
Jiraiya nodded. The ninja tools forged by the major clans were fairly similar in quality, so it didn't matter much where they shopped.
Tsunade and Jiraiya entered the Akimichi shop, which was connected to those of the Yamanaka and Nara Clans.
These three clans shared a close bond and were collectively known as the Ino-Shika-Cho Trio, a formidable faction with significant influence in Konoha's leadership.
"Welcome! How can I assist you?" A middle-aged Chunin from the Akimichi Clan greeted them warmly.
"We'll need some standard ninja tools and a few ration pills," Tsunade said.
"This way, please. Everything you're looking for is over here."
The Chunin courteously led them to another counter, which displayed various basic ninja tools like shuriken, kunai, and senbon. Behind the glass, ration pills were neatly arranged.
"I'll take all of these tools and ration pills," Tsunade declared boldly.
Jiraiya couldn't help but marvel at how great it must feel to be rich.
The Chunin, delighted by Tsunade's lavish spending, quickly packed the items into a storage scroll—a common ninja tool used to store non-living items.
"As disciples of the Hokage, you're entitled to a 20% discount at our shop," the Chunin said, announcing the reduced price.
Being students of the Hokage had its perks, particularly when shopping at stores run by clans loyal to the Hokage.
The Ino-Shika-Cho trio was especially staunch in their support of the Hokage, regardless of who held the position.
Tsunade paid without hesitation and handed Jiraiya half of the storage scrolls.
Jiraiya and his shadow clone, laden with bags, followed Tsunade back to the Senju Clan's compound.
After they unloaded everything, Jiraiya was about to leave when Tsunade suddenly grabbed his arm. She pulled out a wooden bracelet and held it out to him.
"You've worked hard today. This is a gift I picked out for you. I won't let your effort go unrewarded," Tsunade said.
Jiraiya took the bracelet and noticed that one of the beads was inscribed with the character "纲" (Tsunade's name).
He was surprised.
Was this her way of claiming him as hers? Could it be that Tsunade secretly liked him already?
"Why aren't you putting it on? Don't tell me you think it's ugly. Are you doubting my taste?" Tsunade said, frowning.
"Of course not. I just wasn't expecting you to give me a gift," Jiraiya said as he put on the bracelet.
"Hmph."
"This is the first time I've given a guy a gift, so you'd better appreciate it," Tsunade said, a little shyly.
Jiraiya and Tsunade chatted for a while longer before parting ways.
'Seems like my small goal isn't so far off after all,' Jiraiya said to himself, smiling as he glanced at the bracelet on his wrist.
"System, sign in," Jiraiya said early one morning after waking up.
"[Ding! Sign-in successful. You've acquired Great Dragon Fire Technique," the system chimed.
The Great Dragon Fire Technique was a B-rank Fire Release jutsu with considerable destructive power.
Given his naturally strong affinity for Fire Release chakra, it was an excellent fit for him.
"Extract," Jiraiya commanded.
Information about the technique flooded his mind, and he mastered it instantly.
After washing up and having breakfast, he made his way to the training grounds near the Hokage's office.
Five days had passed, and it was finally time for them to embark on their mission.
When Jiraiya arrived, Tsunade and Orochimaru showed up shortly after.
The three entered the training grounds together and found Hiruzen Sarutobi already waiting for them.
They greeted their teacher respectfully.
"You're all here early. Looks like you're excited for your mission," Hiruzen said with a smile.
"Sensei, stop teasing us and just tell us what the mission is," Tsunade said eagerly.
Hiruzen chuckled and handed each of them a scroll.
Jiraiya opened his scroll to find a map detailing the route to the border between the Land of Fire and the Land of Rain. The mission objective was written below.
They were tasked with guarding a batch of medicinal herbs growing in the border area. These herbs were essential for making antidotes and healing potions, making them a strategic resource.
The border was unstable, and there was concern that enemy forces might target the herbs.
"You'll move at full speed to the designated location. Once there, you'll follow the orders of Jonin Sakumo Hatake," Hiruzen instructed.
