Chapter 354: Chapter 354: The Daimyo Ran Away!
"The people in this country seem a little strange. Their living environment and conditions…" Kushina observed, frowning slightly as they ventured deeper into the Grass Country. Yet, she couldn't pinpoint exactly what felt off.
"Do you feel like their lives are difficult, despite the abundance of resources in this country?" Shinki asked, offering an explanation.
"Yes, exactly!" Kushina exclaimed, clenching her fists in frustration. "I've had this vague feeling all along, but I couldn't put it into words."
The Grass Country's environment was similar to the Fire Country's—lush, fertile, and abundant with natural resources. Yet, the civilians' standard of living was drastically worse. Passing through some villages, it felt as though they were walking into impoverished shelters.
"It's truly strange," Uchiha Mikoto said thoughtfully. As someone with a keen eye for economics and social structure, she added, "With such favorable conditions, even basic agriculture should provide enough for people to live comfortably. The Land of Fields is a prime example of this."
The Land of Fields, a small agricultural nation, thrived on its farming industry. Despite its size, it flourished, with civilians enjoying stability and prosperity. So why wasn't the Grass Country the same?
The three girls turned to Shinki for answers.
Kushina tugged at Shinki's sleeve, ready to pout and playfully plead for an explanation. But Shinki spoke before she could begin.
"The reason is simple: the people in this country are sick—figuratively, at least. The nobles of the Daimyo Prefecture are parasites, bleeding the country dry. Their ninja village follows the same spineless philosophy as the nation's name, always playing both sides."
"In other countries, civilians can live stable lives through agriculture. But here, the nobles of the Daimyo Prefecture siphon every resource they can, leaving nothing for the people."
The three girls were stunned. Could the nobles really disregard their own people's suffering to such an extent? It was unimaginable in the Land of Fire, especially in Konoha, where even ninjas helped civilians during harvest seasons.
"To put it bluntly," Shinki continued, "the nobles and ninjas here have used their abilities for all the wrong reasons. Their ambition and greed have turned a once-prosperous nation into a husk of what it could have been."
A History of Betrayal
Shinki elaborated, his tone laced with disdain.
"The nobles and ninja village of the Grass Country have built a reputation for betrayal, greed, and theft. They're infamous for betraying their allies, plagiarizing other villages' ninjutsu, undercutting mission prices, and sabotaging the mission commission system."
"If there were an award for the most detestable country and village in the ninja world, the Grass Country and Grass Village would win without question," Shinki declared.
"If this country weren't sandwiched between the Fire Country and the Earth Country—serving as a buffer zone—it would've been destroyed countless times over."
Kushina, who had initially felt some sympathy for the civilians, quickly changed her mind.
"They don't deserve any sympathy!" she huffed, crossing her arms.
Uchiha Mikoto and Hyuga Mehu exchanged shocked glances, struggling to reconcile the reality of the Grass Country with their prior perceptions.
Shinki patted Kushina on the head. "Even the civilians here can't be fully trusted. Many of them sell goods to travelers during the day, only to rob and kill them at night. Merchants actively avoid this country, not because of taxes but because they might not make it out alive."
By now, all three girls were speechless. This wasn't just corruption—it was a societal collapse from top to bottom.
Departure from the Grass Country
Disgusted, Kushina decided to cut their stay short. "This place is worse than the Land of Rain. Let's leave for the Land of Iron. At least that place doesn't make me feel this uncomfortable."
Shinki agreed. "This country has long since crossed the line. It's better to leave before we're dragged into their mess."
The Daimyo's Panic
Meanwhile, another assassination rocked the Daimyo's mansion in the Fire Country. This time, the noble in charge of finances was killed. The assassination plunged the mansion into chaos, pushing the Daimyo to the brink of a nervous breakdown.
Unable to bear the escalating danger, the Daimyo fled to Konoha under the cover of night, surrounded by his guards.
His sudden departure stunned everyone, including the Third Hokage and Shimura Danzo. While Danzo had intended to instill fear and dependence, neither he nor the Hokage anticipated that the Daimyo would abandon his mansion entirely.
The Daimyo's actions reflected a fundamental difference in mindset. For ninjas, danger was an occupational hazard. For the Daimyo, a man accustomed to comfort and luxury, any threat to his safety was intolerable.
Though the Hokage had hoped to pressure the Daimyo into cooperation, the plan had inadvertently backfired. The Daimyo's panic-driven flight created unforeseen complications. The Konoha ninjas assigned to protect him scrambled to keep up, unsure how their actions would be judged upon their return to the village.
Would the Third Hokage reprimand them? Likely not—after all, everything had been done with his tacit approval.
