Chapter 145: Chapter 145: Back to the Future
Anrokuzan's transformation into a puppet differed greatly from Sasori's infamous technique.
Sasori retained a portion of his original body as a core, controlling his puppet form through this core. This approach granted him near-immortality, as his life force persisted as long as the core remained intact.
In contrast, Anrokuzan had merged his very soul into a specially crafted puppet, bypassing the need for a physical core. While this allowed him to achieve a form of immortality, it also meant he relied entirely on the puppet's durability. Puppets, no matter how robust, were still subject to wear and tear. To counter this limitation, Anrokuzan tapped into the Dragon Vein's infinite chakra, using its energy to maintain and repair his puppet body indefinitely.
Kirito initially suspected Anrokuzan retained a hidden core like Sasori, which would need to be destroyed to defeat him. However, his Byakugan revealed no such structure within Anrokuzan's massive form. This confirmed his theory: Anrokuzan's soul was fully integrated with his puppet body, sustained solely by the Dragon Vein's chakra.
Realizing this, Kirito knew he could extract Anrokuzan's soul directly using the Human Path's ability—a technique that forcibly pulls the soul from a body unless the target has strength equal to or greater than the user. Given Kirito's overwhelming power, there was no one in the current ninja world capable of resisting it.
With one decisive motion, Kirito placed his hand on Anrokuzan's forehead. The grotesque monster let out a final, panicked roar as his soul was wrenched free. Without the sustaining force of his soul, Anrokuzan's massive body began to crumble, disintegrating into lifeless sand.
The End of Anrokuzan
Minato was the first to approach Kirito. "Did you deal with him?" he asked, his keen eyes scanning the dissipating remains of Anrokuzan. "I can sense that he's gone."
Kirito lowered his outstretched hand and stepped back, letting his iron sand surfboard descend from the air. "Yes," he replied. "I sealed his soul with a sealing technique. He won't return."
Minato nodded, turning his gaze toward the distant horizon where Rouran's central tower stood. "Good. I can feel the Dragon Vein's chakra stabilizing as well. Sara must have successfully sealed it. Everything is back under control."
Jumping down from the surfboard, TenTen joined them with a grin. "Sara works fast. Now that everything's settled, it looks like it's time for us to leave…"
Before she could finish her sentence, both Kirito and TenTen began to glow faintly. White spots of light appeared on their bodies, their forms gradually becoming transparent.
"Master Minato, can I keep this kunai as a souvenir?" TenTen suddenly asked, pulling a Flying Thunder God Kunai from behind her. Her eyes sparkled with hope. "It's not every day you get to work with the legendary Fourth Hokage."
Minato hesitated. "But… wouldn't that disrupt the flow of time?"
"It won't," Kirito interjected. "We're from the future. Anything we take or know is already part of history. Nothing we do here can change the past."
After a brief pause, Minato relented with a smile. "Alright, consider it my thanks for helping us defeat Anrokuzan. But," he added seriously, "please erase our memories of you. As I mentioned before, knowing too much about the future can disturb the timeline."
Kirito and TenTen exchanged amused glances. "Fine," Kirito said with a shrug. "Memory manipulation is my specialty, after all."
Minato called Kakashi, Choza, and Shibi over, and the group willingly submitted to Kirito's "memory modification." A few moments later, Kirito stepped back. "Done. The changes will take effect in one minute. You'll remember defeating Anrokuzan yourselves and nothing about us."
"Wait, why not now—" Choza began, but before he could finish, Kirito and TenTen held hands, their glowing forms smiling and waving goodbye.
"This was a fun trip," TenTen said. "See you in the future!"
As they dissolved into light, Minato sighed with a wry smile. "They got us in the end…"
Kakashi blinked, confused, before breaking into a grin. "As expected of Minato-sensei! You handled that Anrokuzan guy like a pro!"
Choza and Shibi chimed in with their own praises, leaving Minato to glance skyward with a mixture of amusement and exasperation.
Returning to the Future
Kirito and TenTen emerged from the glowing beam of light, returning to the dilapidated underground hall where their journey had begun.
"It feels like we've been gone forever," TenTen said, rolling her shoulders. The familiar surroundings confirmed they were back in their own time.
Kirito glanced at the crumbling ceiling and the rubble strewn across the floor. "It seems like no time has passed here. We probably returned just seconds after we left."
TenTen looked up at the ceiling as well, watching the slow fall of debris. "Good. I'd hate to come back and find out Lee and Naruto already have kids or something. That'd be terrifying."
She cast a sidelong glance at Kirito, who was facing the fading beam of light. The altar at its base had returned to its original state, the Dragon Vein's chakra fully resealed.
"Do you think we can travel through time again by undoing the seal on the Dragon Vein?" she asked curiously.
Kirito shook his head. "No. After today, there will be no more 'Dragon Vein.'"
Before TenTen could ask what he meant, Kirito approached the altar and pulled out the Flying Thunder God Kunai embedded in its surface. Placing his palm on the sealing formula, he activated a new technique.
"Wait!" TenTen called out, remembering the chaos that erupted the last time the seal was tampered with. "Are you sure about this?"
The sealing formula on the altar began to glow, shrinking until it disappeared into Kirito's hand. Without the seal to suppress it, the Dragon Vein's chakra erupted in a violent torrent, surging toward the sky like a roaring dragon.
"Kirito!" TenTen shouted, shielding her eyes from the blinding light.
But Kirito stood unfazed, raising his hand toward the wild energy. With a calm, controlled motion, he bent the beam of chakra midair, redirecting it into his open palm.
"It's incredible..." TenTen muttered, watching the overwhelming chakra flow into Kirito's hand without resistance. As he absorbed the energy, several glowing purple-black orbs began to form in his other hand.
And with that, the last remnants of the Dragon Vein vanished forever.
