Chapter 147: Chapter 147: News from Konoha

"Sarah?" TenTen called out instinctively when she saw the approaching girl.

But she immediately shook her head. "No, this is the future. Sarah would be much older now."

Kirito, his mind sifting through fragmented memories, speculated aloud, "It might be one of Sarah's descendants."

As TenTen mulled over this possibility, the girl approached them. Bowing politely, she asked, "Are you the friends my mother spoke of?"

"Mother?" TenTen's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait… is your mother Sarah?"

The girl smiled softly. "Yes, she often spoke of the two brave ninjas who helped her long ago. She wanted me to wait here in her place, to fulfill her final wish."

TenTen felt a pang in her heart at the mention of Sarah's last wish. "Final wish?" she echoed. "Is Sarah… gone?"

The girl's expression turned somber. "After Anrokuzan was defeated, Rouran found peace for a time. But the dragon veins attracted the attention of warring factions. The conflicts pushed my mother to her limits. She worked tirelessly to protect Rouran and its people, but… she fell ill from exhaustion and passed away."

TenTen's chest tightened as the news sank in. "So, it wasn't Anrokuzan, but war that…"

The girl nodded. "Before she died, my mother made sure Rouran relocated to a safe oasis far from the dragon veins. She asked me to wait near this altar whenever I could. She believed you would return one day."

"Sarah's foresight is remarkable," Kirito remarked, his tone thoughtful. "Even in her final days, she thought of her friends."

A Changed Rouran

The girl continued, "I have the same ability as my mother to sense and control the dragon veins. When I felt the chakra surge earlier, I rushed here, worried the seal might have weakened."

TenTen glanced at Kirito with a knowing smirk. "That's your doing. You'd better explain."

Kirito sighed but obliged. "Here's the situation: the good news is you don't have to worry about the dragon veins going berserk anymore. The bad news is… they're gone. Completely gone."

The girl's expression flickered with surprise, but she quickly composed herself. "I see. If it's something you resolved, I trust my mother would have approved. Rouran no longer relies on the dragon veins, so their absence changes little for us."

TenTen tilted her head in admiration. "Wow, she's nothing like Sarah. So calm and collected."

The girl chuckled lightly. "That's because Rouran has moved on. My mother made sure we could thrive without relying on the dragon veins. For us, they became more of a legacy than a necessity."

Kirito nodded. "Your mother's vision ensured Rouran's survival. Her strength as a leader was unmatched."

The girl smiled warmly at their praise. "Thank you. Would you like to visit our new home? It would mean a lot to us."

Kirito glanced at the sky, sensing urgency. "Next time. It seems there's something pressing we need to handle."

Urgent News

TenTen followed his gaze to a black dot circling above. "A messenger hawk from Konoha?"

The hawk descended swiftly, landing on Kirito's outstretched arm. Its sharp eyes and sturdy frame marked it as one of Konoha's prized messengers—used only for urgent matters.

Kirito retrieved the message from its leg, his expression growing serious as he read. "The village is in trouble," he said after a pause.

TenTen's face tensed. "What happened?"

Kirito handed the hawk a morsel of food before setting it free. "Danzo and remnants of Orochimaru's forces launched a prison raid. They managed to free Orochimaru… but he didn't survive."

TenTen blinked, stunned. "Wait, what?! Orochimaru escaped but… died?"

Kirito nodded grimly. "It seems the raid was successful, but something happened during their retreat. The details are unclear. We'll need to return immediately to find out more."

A Farewell

The girl, sensing their urgency, stepped forward. "I understand. If Konoha needs you, I won't delay you any longer."

She handed a small scroll to TenTen. "This contains the location of our oasis. Please visit us if you can. My mother would have wanted that."

TenTen accepted the scroll with a smile. "Thank you. We'll definitely come someday."

The girl bowed deeply. "Thank you again, for everything you've done for Rouran. My mother's faith in you was well placed."

As the girl turned to leave, Kirito and TenTen watched her board a luxurious carriage at the head of a large convoy.

"She really is Sarah's daughter," TenTen mused. "But she feels so… different."

"Maybe Sarah had a side we never saw," Kirito suggested with a faint smile. "Or maybe time and circumstances shaped her daughter into someone stronger."

TenTen watched the convoy disappear into the distance before turning to Kirito. "Alright, let's head back. We've got a lot to figure out."

Return to Konoha

The two set off at a brisk pace, their thoughts heavy with the news from the village. Behind them, the ruins of Rouran stood silent, reclaimed by the sands of the desert—a quiet reminder of the past they had briefly touched.

As they raced toward Konoha, TenTen broke the silence. "You're going to tell me everything about Orochimaru on the way, right?"

Kirito smirked. "Of course. Let's go."

With that, they vanished into the vast expanse of the desert, their mission far from over.
