Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Secrets Beneath the Surface
The aftermath of the ambush lingered in the air as Luffy, Zoro, and Nami descended the stairs of the inn. The elderly innkeeper trembled as she greeted them, her wrinkled hands clutching the edge of her apron. Her eyes were wide with fear, darting to the door as if expecting more masked men to burst in at any moment. "I've never seen anything like that before," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Who were those men? What do they want with you?"
Luffy gave her a reassuring grin, his usual carefree nature blending with a steely determination. "Don't worry, we'll figure it out. We'll keep you safe." His words were simple, but they carried weight. The old woman's lips trembled into a weak smile, clinging to the hope his confidence offered.
Zoro's hand never strayed far from his swords as he stepped outside, his eyes narrowing beneath the morning sun. The village seemed unchanged on the surface, but he noticed the subtle differences. There were fewer people on the streets than the day before. Conversations ceased when they walked by, and doors closed quietly behind curious eyes. Whispers followed their steps, hushed voices laced with worry. The attack had not gone unnoticed.
"They know something," Nami said, her voice low as her eyes scanned the market. "But they're scared." Her hand clutched her staff a little tighter. She had seen fear like this before—the kind that suffocated people into silence.
Luffy nodded, his expression more serious than usual. "Let's start asking around."
The trio moved from stall to stall in the marketplace, their presence stirring unease wherever they went. Fishermen spoke in hushed tones, their eyes darting nervously toward alleyways. Merchants stiffened when questioned, offering only curt replies before turning their attention to their wares. Children who had played freely the day before now watched from behind their mothers' skirts.
Finally, an old man selling fishing nets glanced over his shoulder before leaning in, his voice barely above a whisper. His skin was weathered from years under the sun, and his eyes held the weariness of someone who had seen too much. "Those men work for the Black Tide," he said, his gaze flicking around as though the name itself could summon danger. "A group that controls this island from the shadows. They don't like outsiders. They take what they want and punish anyone who resists. We've lived under their grip for years."
Luffy's fists tightened, his knuckles turning white. "Why didn't anyone fight back?" he asked, his voice low but edged with frustration.
The old man's eyes were filled with regret and pain. "Because those who fight back disappear. Families vanish overnight. We've tried… but the Black Tide is ruthless. They own the night. They own our fear."
Nami's face darkened as memories of Arlong Park resurfaced—the helplessness, the fear, the suffering. "So, they think they can scare us off?" she muttered, her voice shaking with defiance.
Zoro smirked, his hand resting on Wado Ichimonji's hilt. "They chose the wrong crew." His tone was calm, but the promise of battle burned beneath his words.
Luffy stepped forward, his eyes ablaze with determination. "We're not leaving until we free this island." His voice was firm, cutting through the morning air. It wasn't just a declaration—it was a vow.
The villagers watched from a distance, their expressions a mix of hope and fear. Word of the Straw Hat crew's defiance began to spread, carried from one whispered conversation to the next. For the first time in a long while, there was a flicker of resistance beneath the surface of Raventon Island. A spark that could become a flame.
But in the shadows, the Black Tide was already preparing for their next move. Hidden eyes observed the Straw Hats from the alleys, and a messenger slipped into the depths of the village, delivering news to those who ruled from the dark. The island's calm facade was beginning to crack, and soon, the real storm would come.
