Chapter 82: Chapter 82: Rescuing the Treasure
For bosses of king-tier and above, in addition to the standard "treasures" all elite monsters possess, there were occasional discoveries of their "secret treasures."
However, since these were "secret treasures," obtaining them was far from easy.
In the 50 years that Huaxia had been exploring Ghost Star, they had slain a total of 1,748 king-tier bosses but discovered only 27 secret treasures. Most of these were from weaker bosses encountered early on.
As for map bosses, their secret treasures were even harder to locate—only 4 had ever been found.
Globally, this ratio was not particularly high but still ranked in the middle tier.
Regarding the Guardian Lords, no secret treasures had ever been found, leading to speculation that they simply didn't have any.
It was precisely because secret treasures were so rare that Jiang Kai was utterly stunned at this moment.
Although he had found the secret treasure, there was a problem: he was on the verge of death.
Jiang Kai was fixed to the throne, surrounded by over a dozen thick black tentacles that shot toward him in an instant.
He hurriedly flicked his fingers, sending his throwing knives flying.
At that moment, he realized how naive his plan to sever the tentacles with throwing knives had been.
Due to his previous exhaustion, Jiang Kai couldn't ignite his weapons with fire, and manually throwing them greatly diminished their attack power.
Moreover, the tentacles had astonishingly high defense.
Of the nine throwing knives, two landed critical hits but still failed to penetrate the tentacles!
Seeing that he was about to die atop the Icebound Frozen Fishman's throne, Jiang Kai roared furiously.
"PHASE OUT!"
Instantly, Jiang Kai's body entered a translucent state. The tentacles' ferocious attacks passed straight through him, slamming into the throne instead.
The missed strike left the tentacles limp, and even those binding Jiang Kai fell away.
Seizing the opportunity, Jiang Kai leaped aside, trembling as he glanced at the writhing, black tentacles on the throne.
They resembled either the Frozen Fishman Lord's intestines or some kind of worms—either way, they were disgusting.
Fortunately, the Frozen Fishman Lord's death-revenge ability deactivated after this single attack.
"I... I survived?" Even Jiang Kai himself could hardly believe it.
Who would have thought that the one to save him this time would be his Specter Armor?
"No wonder the odds of obtaining a secret treasure are less than one in a thousand. Without the Specter Armor, even finding the treasure would've meant certain death." Jiang Kai shuddered at the thought.
In fact, even if others possessed Specter Armor, there was a high chance it would have already been used to block damage during the earlier battle.
But Jiang Kai, having avoided physical attacks throughout the fight, was able to activate the phasing ability at the critical moment when he was dragged into the ice palace.
As thoughts of the secret treasure returned to his mind, Jiang Kai snapped back to attention.
Secret treasures didn't last forever. Once their owner perished, they would begin to dissipate, eventually vanishing entirely.
This meant every minute Jiang Kai wasted here was a minute closer to losing the treasure.
He had roughly nine minutes to locate the treasure within the ice palace.
Realizing this, Jiang Kai wasted no time and bolted down the corridors, shouting, "Where is it? Where's the treasure?"
The ice palace was vast and labyrinthine, with numerous interconnected passages. Jiang Kai ran like his life depended on it, frantically searching.
Luckily, the palace walls were made of transparent ice bricks, allowing visibility through them.
Soon, Jiang Kai spotted a massive, purple-gold treasure chest emitting faint purple mist.
Could the mist mean the chest was beginning to fade?
Touching the icy wall separating him from the treasure, Jiang Kai anxiously paced back and forth before quickly determining the direction to reach it.
He sprinted along the wall with all his might.
After several minutes, Jiang Kai finally arrived before the treasure chest.
Without hesitation, he threw the lid open and began scooping out its contents as fast as he could.
He didn't bother inspecting what he pulled out—his only goal was to grab as much as possible, treating it like a frantic supermarket sweep.
"Don't disappear! There's still so much left!" Jiang Kai shouted, struggling to pull out particularly heavy items. "Come on, get out of there!"
Unfortunately, time was running out. Before he could finish, the treasure chest began to fade.
With one final effort, Jiang Kai grabbed another pile of items just as the chest disappeared entirely.
Exhausted, he slumped to the ground, gasping for air.
"Fighting a boss isn't even this tiring…" Jiang Kai muttered as he caught his breath. "It'd be nice if Old Hu or that drunkard Ru Yan were here to help..."
Then he realized how naive that thought was—those two would've likely been killed outright by the tentacles.
Looking at the pile of loot surrounding him, Jiang Kai couldn't help but grin.
Though he regretted leaving behind many items, he consoled himself, knowing he had done his best.
"Time to inspect the goods!" Jiang Kai sat up and turned his attention to the treasures before him, his eyes gleaming with anticipation.
The first item he appraised nearly made him lose his mind.
[Low-Tier Celestial Tome Fragment: Can upgrade any skill to Level 2.]
Each profession had two ways to upgrade their skills:
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
1. Skill Books: These could be specific to either class-based or general skills but were highly dependent on luck or a guild's resource network.
2. Celestial Tome Fragments: These versatile fragments could upgrade any skill, whether innate or acquired later.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
However, the stronger the skill, the more fragments were required. Even so, these fragments were an invaluable resource.
"Oh my god, Celestial Tome Fragments! These are practically extinct on the market because demand is so high. Just one fragment sells for at least 500,000 alliance coins." Jiang Kai counted the fragments in awe. "A hundred fragments? That's 50 million!"
With 100 fragments, he estimated he could level up three to four skills.
Handling them like priceless treasures, Jiang Kai carefully stashed the fragments in his inventory before examining the next item.
[Frozen Fishman Secret Elixir (Degrading), 3 pills: Permanently increases base attributes by 100 points. Requires Frozen Fishman-specific preservation methods; exposure to air depletes potency. Current potency: 20%.]
Jiang Kai's eyes widened, and without a second thought, he stuffed all three pills into his mouth.
The familiar system voice chimed in:
[Congratulations! You have consumed Frozen Fishman Secret Elixir, gaining 60 permanent attribute points. This attribute is calculated in your base stats and benefits from post-transition bonuses.]
[Please allocate 60 free attribute points within 10 seconds. Unassigned points will disappear.]
Jiang Kai froze.
Sixty points of free attributes? How should he allocate them? Strength, constitution, agility, or spirit… everything seemed equally important.
With little time to think, he blurted out:
"Put all 60 points into agility!"
