Chapter 143: Chapter 142: Twists and Turns
"Let's move to another location; there's not enough room here to fight," Quaiesse suggested.
"Alright," Nana agreed.
Quaiesse led Nana to an open area outside the city. It was spacious, and more importantly, no one would witness his defeat if he lost.
"Give me three minutes to prepare," he said.
Quaiesse began casting spells. His swordsmanship was impressive, but his magic was even more formidable. As a beast tamer, he could summon creatures he had tamed at any time.
Each of his ten fingers bore a ring, with each ring corresponding to a different creature.
The title One-Man Corps came from his ability to rival an entire military division with his own strength and summoned beasts.
"Summon!"
"Giant Basilisk."
"Vulture Lord."
"Wind-Scented Hawk."
"Magic Ape."
"Hunter Lion."
"Three-Headed Wolf."
"Earth Dragon."
"Gale Horse."
"Gargoyle."
"Marionette Monster."
Ten distinctly different summoned creatures appeared before Quaiesse.
"I'm ready. Let's begin!" Quaiesse declared, feeling a bit more at ease as he looked at his summoned creatures. Having a dagger pressed against his throat earlier had been a truly unsettling experience.
In the previous battle to defend the city, he hadn't summoned these creatures because their deaths would be irreversible. Losing any of them would mean a tremendous personal cost, as they were all acquired through painstaking effort and dedication.
Drawing the sword from his waist, Quaiesse prepared himself.
In an instant, Nana's figure vanished. A second later, she reappeared beside the Giant Basilisk. With a single swing, she decapitated it.
Quaiesse's heart nearly stopped at the sight.
The Giant Basilisk was the strongest among his summoned creatures. Even a top-tier Platinum-ranked adventurer would struggle to take it down in a one-on-one fight. It was his most treasured asset, and now it was gone, just like that.
While Quaiesse stood stunned, Nana moved to slaughter his other creatures.
"Stop!" he shouted, his voice filled with anguish.
As he yelled, Nana threw two daggers, striking the Vulture Lord and the Wind-Scented Hawk, killing them both simultaneously.
By the time Quaiesse regained his senses, only the Three-Headed Wolf remained. The rest of his creatures had been annihilated.
Originally, Quaiesse had the demeanor of a gentleman, but at this moment, he completely lost his composure.
His expression twisted into one of utter chaos, resembling the face his sister made when she was angry.
"Do you surrender?" Nana asked calmly.
"I surrender your m—..." Quaiesse's retort was cut short.
Because Nana's dagger was already pressed against his throat.
Moreover, since Quaiesse hadn't admitted defeat, Nana had thrown her other dagger, killing the Three-Headed Wolf.
Now, Quaiesse was left with no beasts at all—just a beast tamer with no beasts.
Deep down, Quaiesse desperately wanted to kill Nana right then and there, but with her dagger pressed firmly against his neck, he didn't dare make a move.
"If he made any aggressive move... his life would likely be over."
"I surrender!" Quaiesse finally admitted, his heart bleeding with anguish.
He had spent five years acquiring those beasts.
Only he knew the hardships he endured during that time, but now, all of it had vanished in an instant.
He had originally intended to keep those beasts for life-saving purposes, but this wasn't a life-or-death duel with Nana.
"You don't look too good. Does losing make you feel this bad?"
Nana hadn't planned to ask, but considering she needed him to help her join the Black Scripture, she felt it was necessary to say something.
"You killed all my beasts! How could I not feel bad?" Quaiesse shouted loudly.
"Just summon more beasts," Nana replied matter-of-factly.
"Summon? Do you even know what tier of magic is required to summon beasts like those? It requires Seventh Tier Magic! And this kind of magic isn't even documented—there's no record, no incantation, nothing to summon them with!"
"Do you have any idea how much effort I put into acquiring those beasts? And you just went and killed them all!"
"Well, you didn't tell me that beforehand," Nana replied calmly.
"So, you're saying this is my fault?"
"Yeah, exactly," Nana said without hesitation.
Hearing her response, Quaiesse's anger skyrocketed to the max.
"You little—!" He started, but midway through shouting, he forced himself to hold back.
Why? Because Nana, who had just put her daggers away, now had them out again.
And the look in her eyes—she genuinely seemed ready to kill.
Faced with this brutal reality, Quaiesse swallowed the words he was about to say.
Without another word, he turned and headed back into the city.
Nana followed closely behind him, as Quaiesse had previously said that defeating him was the first step to joining the Black Scripture.
As they reached the city gate, Quaiesse turned his gaze toward the guard captain assisting with city defense.
"She's a spy sent by another nation—capture her!" Quaiesse said, pointing at Nana.
The moment his words fell, the finger he used to point at Nana was severed.
Nana stood there holding a blood-stained dagger, and on the ground lay a freshly severed finger.
Just moments ago, Nana had been ready to kill, but she recalled Yulia's instructions: no killing.
Otherwise, she would lose the chance to become a member of the Black Scripture.
It was because of Yulia's words that Nana refrained from ending Quaiesse's life outright.
Then, in full view of everyone, Nana vanished, disappearing into thin air.
The soldiers thrust their long spears at the spot where Nana had just disappeared, but they failed to strike anything.
At this moment, Nana had already entered the Holy City.
