Chapter 8: Chapter 8- Is this human nature?!
"What the hell! Damn it! This idiot! What the hell are you doing?!"
Jonathan felt like stabbing Henry with his spear right there. The gate had already been smashed by the car, and the outer fence of the yard was almost useless now.
The zombies could break through the damaged gate and rush into the yard at any moment!
Henry's actions were nothing short of suicidal!
If the car's horn kept blaring like this, it would attract every zombie in the vicinity to the villa! What was once a peaceful little town would soon become overwhelmed with danger, as countless zombies would crowd into the yard. Once they had devoured all the food inside, leaving would be an impossible dream!
This was almost like self-destruction!
Jonathan, having seen Henry portray Ethan Hunt in the movie, had initially assumed Henry was a calm, clever, witty, and highly skilled agent.
But now, he realized that the guy was nothing like the character he played!
Not only did he have a bad temper, but he was also clumsy and reckless—completely unconcerned with the consequences!
He was acting like a spoiled big kid!
"Get that damn horn off!!" Jonathan yelled in frustration, leaving the four elderly and weak zombies he was fighting and rushing toward the off-road vehicle.
No matter what, he had to turn off the horn before the zombies arrived!
"Fuck!!" Henry suddenly screamed in panic, abandoning the axe stuck in the trunk, and ran toward Jonathan like a madman.
Jonathan tried to stop him, but Henry's strong body knocked him off balance. Before he could steady himself, the sight ahead made him break out in a cold sweat!
In the distance, through the trees, Jonathan saw a massive swarm of zombies pouring toward them. Looking out, it was like a dark cloud looming over them!
Jonathan fought to suppress the fear rising within him and quickly calculated the distance.
At the zombies' current speed, they would reach the villa in about a minute!
If Jonathan, like Henry, turned and ran back to the villa, he would definitely make it in time!
However, the sharp and noisy blaring of the car horn would never stop until the car's battery was drained!
That much time was enough to attract thousands of zombies to surround the entire villa!
By then, he, along with the Henry couple, would be trapped inside the villa with no way out!
Once the food and water ran out, if the zombies hadn't retreated, all three of them would undoubtedly die!
The thought passed through his mind in an instant. Jonathan's figure barely paused before he once again accelerated toward the off-road vehicle!
"Bang!"
"Crash!"
As Jonathan smashed the car's window, Henry, with Tiffany's help, retreated back into the villa.
There was no time to think. Jonathan reached through the shattered glass window to quickly open the car door and then yanked the hood release switch.
"Thud!"
The off-road vehicle's hood popped open.
Jonathan turned his head to look at the approaching zombie horde.
It had already been half a minute!
Hundreds or even thousands of zombies were now less than a hundred meters away from him!
At this distance, Jonathan had at most another half a minute!
"1... 2... 3... 4..." Jonathan silently counted in his head, swiftly rolling over the hood of the car and expertly opening it to start searching for the connection wires to the car alarm.
"18... 19... 20..."
The zombies were getting closer!
50 meters...
40 meters...
30 meters...
Jonathan continued calmly counting, using the sound of the horn to guide him in finding its location!
He was sure he wasn't mistaken; the alarm horn had to be hidden somewhere beneath the engine hood!
Sweat beads as big as soybeans kept sliding down Jonathan's forehead, soaking his eyes and gradually blurring his vision.
"24... 25..."
Jonathan could now clearly hear the sound of the zombies' breathing and the dense shuffle of their footsteps!
"Hiss~~~ Hiss~~~"
"Ugh~~~ Ugh Ugh~~~"
The zombies were right on top of him!
However, the old off-road vehicle was well-protected, and Jonathan couldn't immediately find the horn's location!
Once he reached 30, he knew he couldn't stay any longer. Even if it meant certain death, he had no choice but to retreat back to the villa and come up with another plan!
"28... 29... Let's do it!!"
With a low growl, Jonathan thrust his spear hard into a white plastic part next to the off-road vehicle's engine!
"Boom!!"
A soft sound, and white smoke began to rise from the plastic part.
The sharp and loud honking immediately stopped!
At the last moment, Jonathan had thought of using the method of damaging the battery to cut off the horn's power supply, and it worked!
Without wasting a moment, Jonathan shot a quick glance at the off-road vehicle, and with a burst of strength, pulled out the spear and sprinted towards the villa's security door!
In the fraction of a second that followed, a large group of zombies wildly rushed towards Jonathan's original position!
"Ugh~~ Ugh Ugh~~"
"Hiss Hiss Hiss~~"
"Roar~~ Roar~~"
The zombie growls were incredibly clear behind Jonathan, and it felt as though they were breathing right next to his ear!
The disgusting, rotten flesh smell hit him full force!
He knew the zombies were just inches away!
If he was even one second later, he'd be nothing more than a meal for the zombies!
"Open the door!!" Jonathan yelled desperately at the villa's security door as he ran.
At this distance, if the door opened just a little, he could dive in, and the zombies following him would never catch up!
But the security door remained completely still!
Not a single sign of it moving!
Jonathan's steps faltered slightly!
He thought of the cruelest possibility!
"Bastards! Open the door!!" Jonathan shouted again at the two inside the villa. He still clung to a sliver of hope about human nature!
At this point, Jonathan had reached the door, but it still hadn't budged!
"No surprise, no luck!"
Jonathan's eyes were bloodshot with anger, and his whole body trembled with rage!
He hated this couple, but more than that, he hated himself!
This was the apocalypse!
There was no morality!
No law!
No rules!
Not even right or wrong!
Everything was just about surviving!
Living longer!
Pity for others was cruelty to oneself!
Rather than asking Henry and Tiffany, he was questioning his own heart!
Why, knowing what humanity would become in the apocalypse, did he still act on the weak kindness in his heart and try to save people?!
Why?
Why?!
This wasn't kindness! It was weakness!!
Only weak people, too afraid to face the brutality of the apocalypse, would disguise their stupidity as kindness!
True courage was transcending the moral shackles in their hearts and making themselves live better!
Forgetting those petty notions of kindness and laughable sympathy!
In the apocalypse, no one would truly show you kindness!
Jonathan swung his spear with wild fury, smashing the heads of the first two zombies that lunged at him!
His rage had made him fearless!
"I'm sorry, sir! You're disturbing our lives here! You should go find another shelter!" Tiffany's apologetic voice came from inside the villa.
Although she said "sorry," there wasn't even a hint of guilt in her tone.
"I hope you don't end up as zombie food! May God bless you! Sir, I'm sorry, but I can't share our food and peaceful life with you!" Henry's mocking voice followed.
This was my shelter!
These supplies were mine to begin with!
It was
their
arrival that ruined my life!
Now, these two shamelessly said that I was the one who was unnecessary here?!
Is this human nature?!
Jonathan's eyes, once filled with rage, grew cold and unfeeling. His anger melted into an icy resolve, his gaze becoming deep and relentless, as though the storm inside him had calmed into a still, dark ocean.
"Thank you… for helping me adapt so quickly to the apocalypse! For making me see the true nature of humanity!" Jonathan's voice was like a blade of ice, cold and sharp.
As the swarm of zombies closed in, Jonathan didn't flinch. In fact, his body seemed to surge with energy, his spirit no longer haunted by fear. Instead, it was filled with a burning desire to survive—fight, kill, endure.
The narrow staircase outside the villa became his battleground. The spear in his hands moved like a viper, striking with precision, killing one zombie after another.
Each strike fed the system, and every kill filled him with energy, the snow-white light from the zombies' brain nuclei weaving into his body.
Finally, the progress bar in his mind flickered to 100%.
[Ding! System charging complete! Congratulations, the Space Gate is now unlocked!]
[Would you like to open the Space Gate immediately?]
The sweet, feminine voice echoed in Jonathan's mind again, but he didn't hesitate. Yes.
A brilliant flash of light surrounded him, and the world around him seemed to freeze in place. The next moment, Jonathan disappeared, swallowed by the white light.
Outside, the zombies continued to charge forward, relentless, their moans and growls filling the air.
"Is he dead?" Tiffany asked, shrinking back, her voice shaky. The sounds of the undead clawing at the villa's door seemed to unsettle her more with each passing second.
"He's probably dead..." Henry said, his voice trembling. He pulled back the curtain slightly, peering out at the writhing mass of zombies swarming around the spot where Jonathan had stood just moments before. A long sigh of relief escaped him. "Even if he's Superman, there's no way he could have survived that..."
Henry swallowed hard, glancing at the car remote key in his hand before tossing it carelessly aside. His earlier panic had subsided, but now there was only a strange calmness... and a growing sense of unease.
