Chapter 22: General Qin’s Phone Call
“Who dares to arrest him?”
Just as the officers were about to rush forward and handcuff Zhou Lang, Qin Pojun spoke up. Zhou Lang had healed his grandfather’s leg, making him a benefactor. For this minor issue, Qin Pojun had no intention of letting Zhou Lang handle it personally.
“Who are you? How dare you obstruct the police in performing their duties? I’ll arrest you along with him,” said Officer Liu, the chubby officer, glaring at Qin Pojun.
“Shouldn’t you have some evidence before making an arrest? Nie Yuanxiong struck first; I was merely acting in self-defense,” Zhou Lang said calmly. From a legal standpoint, he wasn’t at fault. Moreover, considering the influence of General Qin, he had nothing to worry about. This was the perfect opportunity to teach Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian a harsh lesson.
“I said you hit him, so you hit him. Nie Yuanxiong is the son of Deputy Mayor Nie. You better know your place,” Officer Liu retorted arrogantly, bullying them with total impunity.
“Does being the deputy mayor’s son place him above the law?”
This time, General Qin slammed the table in anger. They had fought to establish this country, only to see these so-called righteous successors behave so disgracefully. How could he not be enraged?
“You old fool, how dare you act tough in front of me? Do you want to end up in jail too?”
Officer Liu was furious. He shouted to his men, “It seems they’re all in this together. Cuff them all!”
“Stop!”
General Qin shouted coldly.
“Old man, it’s too late to beg for mercy now,” Nie Yuanxiong said smugly. “Don’t blame your bad luck; blame yourself for associating with a loser like Zhou Lang. He offended Nie Yuanxiong by pestering Miss Ye Qianqian, and now you’ll all suffer the consequences.”
“So, you are Nie Yuanxiong. Let me give a call to the secretary and see if he granted you special privileges to act lawlessly in Feiyun City,” General Qin said slowly. The arrogance of Nie Yuanxiong and these police officers had already infuriated this founding general.
“Old man, stop trying to scare us. Don’t tell me Secretary Lei is your son. Haha.”
Nie Yuanxiong laughed and signaled Officer Liu with a glance. He didn’t believe for a second that General Qin was someone of importance.
Officer Liu waved his hand, and his seven officers moved in to take action.
“Cuff them all,” General Qin ordered his four bodyguards.
The four bodyguards, efficient and synchronized, immediately stood up from the table.
“You dare resist arrest?” one of the officers shouted.
Bang, bang, bang, bang!
Like tigers, General Qin’s four bodyguards pounced on four of the officers.
The officers didn’t even see how they moved before they were kicked flying and slammed to the ground.
The remaining three officers were momentarily stunned before they too were swiftly taken down.
These four bodyguards were masters, not quite a match for a cultivator like Zhou Lang, but dealing with these police officers was child’s play.
“You dare assault officers? I’ll shoot you!”
This scene was beyond what Nie Yuanxiong, Ye Qianqian, and Officer Liu had anticipated. Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian turned pale with fear, while Officer Liu, though outwardly fierce, was inwardly terrified. He reached for his gun.
“Shut up!”
But before Officer Liu could continue, one of General Qin’s bodyguards snatched a pair of handcuffs from another officer, darted to Liu’s side, and grabbed his hands. Although Liu was tall and strong, he was completely overpowered, his hands twisted behind his back and cuffed.
The seven officers under him didn’t fare any better. Within seconds, they were all cuffed, and their guns were confiscated.
“You’d better all squat down in the corner and stay put. Otherwise, they might break your necks or shoot you in the head,” Qin Pojun said coldly to the eight officers.
“Who are you people?”
Officer Liu asked, now fearful. He was just a small squad leader in Feiyun City’s Criminal Investigation Team, and earlier he had been pleased at the chance to help Nie Yuanxiong. Now, he wished he were dead.
“What’s with the talking? Didn’t you understand what I said?”
Qin Pojun scolded.
Terrified, Officer Liu was the first to squat in the corner, though his large size made it difficult. Seeing their leader submit, the other seven officers didn’t dare make a move. They obediently squatted in the corner like prisoners.
Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian, their faces pale with fear and bodies trembling, didn’t dare speak. Who would have thought that the people dining with Zhou Lang were so ruthless that they would even dare to attack the police? After exchanging a glance, the cowardly duo decided the best strategy was to flee.
“If you don’t want to be cuffed or have your legs broken, then stay put. And don’t even think about calling anyone, or you’ll suffer the consequences,” Zhou Lang finally spoke up.
“What are you trying to do, Zhou Lang? Do you realize how serious a crime it is to detain police officers? Do you want to go to prison or face execution?”
Nie Yuanxiong, though he had stopped, still tried to intimidate them.
“Weren’t you the ones who thought you were above the law earlier?” General Qin sneered.
“Now you want to talk about the law? Don’t worry, someone will come to explain the law to you shortly.”
With that, he took out his phone and dialed a number.
…
In the living room of Building No. 1 at the City Party Committee Compound, a middle-aged man in his fifties, with meticulously combed hair, was sitting on the sofa watching TV. Beside him was a beautiful woman in her early forties.
“Honey, we haven’t gone out for a while. How about we take a trip next weekend?” the woman suggested.
“Wife, now that I’m the party secretary, I’m busy every day. I’m not sure if I’ll have time next weekend,” the man replied.
“Sometimes, I feel guilty for not spending enough time with you. But since I’m in this position, I have to do my job well, even if it means you have to endure it.”
“I understand, honey. We can plan the trip when you have time. I’m already happy that you came home early today to watch TV with me,” she smiled.
This couple was no ordinary pair. The man in his fifties was Lei Gang, the Party Secretary of Feiyun City, and the woman was his wife, Leng Xinyue.
“Alright, tonight I’ll turn off my phone and skip all engagements. I’ll just stay with you,” Secretary Lei said, pulling his wife into his arms. He reached for his phone, intending to turn it off.
But just then, his phone rang unexpectedly.
“Who could be calling? I guess you won’t be able to keep your word,” Leng Xinyue sighed.
“Tonight, I’m not answering anyone’s calls,” Lei Gang said, but when he glanced at the caller ID, his expression suddenly changed. He muttered, “It’s the old commander!”
“Which old commander?”
Leng Xinyue asked in confusion.
“Who else could it be? It’s General Qin,” Lei Gang replied.
“Then why haven’t you answered the call yet?”
Leng Xinyue urged.
“Honey, this isn’t me going back on my word; you’re the one telling me to answer it,” Lei Gang said with a smile.
“Are you joking at a time like this? Hurry up and answer before the old commander scolds you,” Leng Xinyue said.
Lei Gang quickly pressed the answer button.
“Yes, sir, old commander, I’m on my way immediately!”
A moment later, Lei Gang stood up from the sofa, his posture straight, and declared loudly as if receiving a military order. His face had become serious.
“Is the old commander asking you to go to Beijing? Is he critically ill?”
Leng Xinyue’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about? The old commander is here in Feiyun City, right now in Room 1 at the Nanshan State Guesthouse. He’s run into some trouble and needs me to go over immediately,” Lei Gang explained.
“Then I’m coming with you,” Leng Xinyue said.
Both she and Lei Gang had served under General Qin back in the day; they had deep feelings for him. Now that they knew General Qin was in Feiyun City, of course, they wanted to rush over immediately.
They were aware that General Qin had suffered a leg ailment and might not have many more opportunities to visit Feiyun City in the future. However, they didn’t know that under Zhou Lang’s treatment, General Qin’s leg had almost fully recovered.
“Then let’s change clothes right away,” Lei Gang said.
…
“Brother Zhou, let’s continue our meal. Someone will come to handle this matter shortly,” General Qin said to Zhou Lang after finishing his call.
Soon, they resumed eating, completely ignoring Nie Yuanxiong, Ye Qianqian, and the eight police officers.
“Zhou Lang, how dare you detain me! Once my father finds out, you’re all dead!”
Nie Yuanxiong, still unaware of General Qin’s identity, fumed as he saw how they were being treated as if they were invisible.
“You think your father is some big shot? He’ll be here soon. I’m curious to see just how impressive a deputy mayor can be,” General Qin said, glancing at Nie Yuanxiong with a slight smile.
“What do you mean?”
Nie Yuanxiong was completely baffled.
“With your intelligence, you’ll never figure it out. Just wait,” Zhou Lang said, raising his glass to toast with General Qin, and then they continued drinking.
“Zhou Lang, you’ve all gone mad. You’ll die miserably,” Ye Qianqian glared at Zhou Lang, her eyes practically shooting flames.
“Ye Qianqian, I’m waiting,” Zhou Lang said, completely unfazed.
…
General Qin had already instructed that once the food and drinks were served, no waitstaff should enter the private room. When Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian brought people over, they also informed the manager of the Nanshan State Guesthouse that they were handling a case in Room 1. As a result, no one else had entered the room to disturb them.
Ten minutes later, the door to the private room opened again.
A couple walked in—it was Lei Gang and Leng Xinyue.
“Commander!”
The moment Lei Gang and Leng Xinyue saw General Qin eating, they immediately stopped in their tracks and executed a perfect military salute.
“You’re here.”
General Qin didn’t stand up; he merely responded in a cold tone.
“Secretary Lei… why are you here?”
The eight police officers squatting in the corner didn’t see Lei Gang salute General Qin, but Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian saw it.
That old man was Secretary Lei’s commander? That must mean he’s a high-ranking official!
Even if they were slow-witted and lacked reverence, Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian realized they were in deep trouble. Nie Yuanxiong’s voice trembled as he spoke.
The eight police officers, upon hearing Nie Yuanxiong’s words, turned around as well, their eyes filled with shock. They all understood that today, they had provoked someone significant, and their careers were likely over.
