Petunia Evans & A Witch

Chapter 18: Chapter 18 - Lily Evans

Lily was her parents' favorite child for being the most beautiful, and Petunia's favorite because she was the only one in the house Petunia could love. She grew up surrounded by unconditional love and affection from all three of them. Yet, she was neither spoiled nor arrogant, as Margaret feared Lily might offend someone in a higher position, and Petunia would not tolerate such behavior.

When she became friends with Severus, Lily learned that not everyone had the same opportunities and that the world was not a fair place. She saw her friend endure hunger, wear tattered clothes, and bear massive bruises on his body. She couldn't understand how parents—the very people meant to protect you—could treat their child that way.

It was a huge surprise when Petunia received her Hogwarts letter. She had never performed accidental magic, but Lily was ecstatic. Petunia was incredible, so of course, it made sense she would have magic too. Their mother explained their family history, revealing that their grandparents had been magical. Petunia and Lily weren't muggleborns, but half-bloods.

Lily waited three long years until it was her turn to attend Hogwarts. She received letters from Petunia describing the wonders of magic and eagerly read her sister's books and notes. She and Severus even underwent penmanship lessons together. Each passing year only heightened her excitement until, finally, she could join her sister.

Hogwarts was magical and extraordinary, unlike the mundane Muggle world. Lily thrived there, embodying the Gryffindor spirit. She was polite, brave, and unafraid to stand up for her beliefs. The smartest in her year, she was also popular, befriending all her Gryffindor classmates except the Marauders. She couldn't stand James Potter and Sirius Black, who were two troublemakers, constantly losing house points. She didn't understand how Lupin and Peter, who seemed sensible, followed along with their pranks.

Though disappointed she and Severus weren't sorted into the same house, she had known it was unlikely for him to end up in Gryffindor. Lily was relieved he hadn't been sorted into Slytherin after all the negative things Petunia had said about them—and Lucius Malfoy's unsettling gaze unnerved her. Being in Slytherin would have made it harder for them to meet at school due to the strange rivalry between Gryffindor and Slytherin.

Lily loved all her classes except Defense, History, and perhaps Astronomy. The professors were wonderful—her Head of House, the Transfiguration professor, was always fair and strict. The Potions' professor was kind, and the Herbology professor was incredibly friendly. But her favorite was the Charms professor, the head of Ravenclaw House. He was short and captivating.

The only professors she disliked were the Defense teacher—he wasn't terrible but lacked expertise—and the History professor, who seemed practically lifeless.

Studying magic was amazing, but the best part was spending time with Petunia, who was always willing to help with homework. The first year flew by, and soon it was summer. Returning home was refreshing; now, she could openly discuss magic with her sister. They had done so before, but now Lily had firsthand experience to share instead of just theory.

In her second year, Petunia was busy with her O.W.L.s, which were crucial for determining her N.E.W.T. courses. They still met in the library and took long walks along the lake, but most of Petunia's time was consumed by studying, understandably, as her future was at stake. It was necessary to stay at school during Christmas and Easter, meaning no breaks, and Lily noticed their mother seemed oddly pleased by Petunia's absence.

Petunia was thrilled after the exams, having scored well in all her desired subjects. She was especially excited about starting Apparition lessons in January.

By Lily's third year, she was finally allowed to visit Hogsmeade. She had heard so much about the village. She and Petunia wore matching pointed hats. Lily tried convincing Severus to wear one, but he was firm in his refusal. They visited the Three Broomsticks, though Petunia didn't seem to enjoy the atmosphere. Lily, on the other hand, would have stayed for hours.

She dragged them from shop to shop, enchanted by all the interesting places. There was a tea house that was a popular dating spot, a sweets shop where they managed to buy some treats despite the short line, and, lastly, a stationery shop. Lily was examining a set of red inks when the screaming started.

She barely had time to react before Petunia grabbed her arm and pulled her toward a cabinet.

"Petunia, aren't we going to help the other students—"

Her words were cut short as Petunia silenced her and confiscated her wand. How could Petunia be so selfish? Severus entered without resistance, and Petunia locked them inside. Lily had no idea how long they stayed there, but it was agonizing—especially when a woman with a psychotic laugh entered the shop. Fortunately, no one discovered them.

Relief came when the Aurors arrived. After being interrogated, they were dismissed and returned to the Three Broomsticks. Lily was upset; many students had been hurt, but Petunia was visibly shaken. One of her friends, Gwen, ran over, her arm bleeding. Many students were injured, ranging from scratches to a boy who had lost his legs.

Lily was fortunate—Petunia had shielded her from witnessing the worst of the horrors. But to Lily, it was cowardice. If she had been better prepared, she wouldn't have hesitated to fight the Death Eaters. And what if they had been discovered? Hiding would have been pointless.

Lily Evans vowed to become a strong witch capable of handling anything life threw at her.
