Chapter 830: CH210 (824), That’s Just Unlucky

I had Dilong/Stan/Gyarados cease the Hydro Pump immediately and he initiated a Hurricane instead. The Draco Meteor reached its zenith and burst apart just as our Hurricane had fully formed. We sent the Hurricane above toward the falling Draco Meteors to buy us enough time to get out of their target zone, but things took an unexpected turn when the draconic energy balls did not explode upon clashing with the Hurricane as we expected them to because that was how Draco Meteor was designed.

Usually, as long as the split Draco Meteor came into contact with anything that offered more than a minimal amount of resistance, they would burst apart releasing the draconic energy inside and explode. Yet, the expected explosions did not happen despite all Draco Meteors getting drawn/falling into the Hurricane. They should have exploded as soon as they came into contact with the air that was whirling at extremely high speeds. Despite that, I actually saw 9 orange light balls being dragged around the current as if they were orbiting the Hurricane.

I was not sure how that happened without causing the Draco Meteors to burst apart, but while the others were processing the situation, I had Dilong take more control of the Hurricane instead of the bare minimum needed to keep it going, and I reminded him to keep its speed/momentum the same since I did not want to risk putting an end to whatever had caused this coincidence. All I needed him to do was to divert the Hurricane toward Kommo-o.

I had to release a breath of relief when Dilong managed to do that without an explosive mishap, but Ryujin and Kommo-o naturally did not miss the Hurricane heading their way. Kommo-o released a Dragon Pulse to intercept the Hurricane, and it caused the orange balls to erupt as soon as it collided with Dilong's Hurricane. Yet, somehow the Hurricane did not get blown apart by the combined might of the Dragon Pulse and the exploding Draco Meteors.

In a twist, I could hardly believe, the energy from the exploding Draco Meteors spread around the Hurricane and began to move along with its current. It appeared that the pressure from the outside (Dragon Pulse) along with the rotation/momentum and pressure of the Hurricane somehow caused the draconic energy of the Draco Mateors to ride along the Hurricane's current, forming a second layer outside Hurricane, which was ironically comprised of Kommo-o's own energy.

What happened next had me honestly wonder whether the heavens were playing a joke on us; It seemed that because the 2nd layer was formed by Kommo-o's draconic energy, it ended up soaking up the Dragon Pulse that Kommo-o was keeping up in an attempt to destroy the Hurricane, meaning that Kommo-o was inadvertently strengthening the 2nd/draconic layer instead. It took a few seconds for them to realize that they were doing the opposite of what they were aiming for, but at that point escaping was nearly impossible. Thankfully Taunt was still in effect so they couldn't use Protect either.

Kommo-o had to face the attack head-on, and as past failed move experiments have shown us, one's own moves going out of control can hurt oneself even if the damage got lowered by the fact that one's own energy was involved, so Kommo-o first got a faceful of its own charged up draconic energy rubbed in before the Hurricane hit it. The first clash left Kommo-o defenseless against the Hurricane, so it got dragged into the current and got spun around a few times before it was thrown out after regaining enough control to release a Boomburst, which blew the Hurricane apart.

Honestly, had Kommo-o gone for a Boomburst straight away instead of a Dragon Pulse, the previous miracle would likely not have happened since I suspected that the fact that both moves used draconic energy led to the 2nd layer forming and then absorbing the Dragon Pulse. Anyway, with Dilong no longer having to focus on the Hurricane, I had him send a Surf/flood down from the air while Kommo-o rolled on the ground after being sent hurling from the destroyed Hurricane.

I doubted that others were able to see it except for the high-rank trainers with elevated senses among them, but Kommo-o looked rather hurt; More so than I expected it to be if I had to be honest. Luckily for them, it still managed to follow Ryujin's order to use Boomburst to open a hole in the tide that fell upon it, and while it did not stop Kommo-o from getting wet, it stopped it from getting damaged any further.

That was when the Thunderbolt Dilong followed up with came striking down, but they managed to react in time yet again, and Kommo-o groundend itself using Iron Tail. Yet, we had expected something like that since that strategy appeared to be rather common in high-level battles, so Kommo-o grounding itself was what we wanted. The few moments it took for Kommo-o to escape its current position after Ryuijin's follow-up warning were enough for the Bounce Impact, or in this case Diving Impact was probably more appropriate, that Dilong followed up with to land.

The impact of the dive and flying energy boosted Giga Impact caused a giant dust cloud to rise from the place that Kommo-o had been at. After the initial cries of surprise and awe, the crowd quietened down and we waited to see if there would be any movements within the dust or if we would have to wait for it to settle first to see how things looked. I knew that Dilong could not move for some time after he pulled off Bounce, …, Dive Impact, but I knew that he was still conscious, so for me it was more of a question if Kommo-o could still move.

It certainly did not react to Ryujin telling it to use Thunder Punch seeing how no sparks were coming from within the cloud. Some time passed and Dilong informed me that he could move again, so had him blow the dust away, which he did using some simple air (flying energy) manipulation. There was some hubbub once the picture inside the crater was revealed, and everyone got to see the two Pokemon. Dilong was staring at Kommo-o, who while definitely conscious, appeared to be paralyzed.

It was staring back at Dilong as its body lay twitching on the ground with a few sparks flashing around its right arm. It seemed that Kommo-o had heard Ruijin's order, but had been unable to follow through due to the aftereffect of the Bounce Impact. Nonetheless, it seemed to be regaining the feeling in its body since I saw it get back control of its body. Not wanting to give Kommo-o that chance, I had Dilong fire a near point-blank Dragon Pulse at it, which sent it right back to the ground, and this time it was for good.

The referee waited a few moments to see if there would be any movement on Kommo-o's part before declaring it unable to battle, which made Dilong the victor and me the winner of the Gym Battle. Still, while the referee did his thing, I could not help but think that this battle ended way faster than I expected it to and way easier as well. It ultimately boiled down to the unexpected and quite lucky Draco Meteor Hurricane development during this battle.

Not that I thought that Dilong would not have won without that; I did not doubt that for one moment, but it would have taken much more effort as well as time, and I did not think that he would have left in nowhere near as good a shape as he was in now. Still, things went the way they did, and I was not too proud to accept a lucky win, especially not when I believed that we would have won anyway, so once the referee had declared me the winner, and the audience had started to cheer, I reciprocated by waving at them together with Dilong who waved at them using his tail, which raised the audience's cheers by a level.

We did stop and focus on Ryujin when she began to address me after recalling her unconscious Kommo-o. I could feel that she was confused and a tad bit doubtful, probably because she could not believe the way Kommo-o's battle went, but she showed none of that when she spoke. Sure, she was not as energetic or spirited as she had been before Kommo-o fought Dilong, but given the way that went, I could understand that. The fact that she could still calmly congratulate me on my victory despite that already showed her professional attitude.

Furthermore, the fact that she had recovered her spiritedness by the time her assistant handed her the Gym Badge and she passed it to me, showed her strong character. One had to respect that, and I did, so when she brought up the private talk she wanted to have with me, I agreed after she mentioned that it wouldn't take long, though I made sure to ask for a few moments with my family as well as friends to briefly celebrate and to ask them to wait for me outside. I then briefly inspected the 3-star S-rank Badge she handed me before placing it beside the other Badges I earned so far.

After I had done that, I went up to the section of the stands I had seen my group at, and as soon as I had jumped over, Mom crushed me with a hug. Once she was done praising me, she let go and allowed the others to get their congratulations in. I quickly but firmly hugged everyone while accepting and thanking them for their congratulatory words before sharing what I had agreed on with Ryujin. Ace and Yu gave me a thumbs up that I did not deign to react to, just like I ignored the various other more subtle reactions that played out around me.

Anyway, once we agreed to meet up at the reception area in 10 minutes, I made my way back down to the battlefield to join Ryujin, who had been waiting for me there. She then asked me to follow her, and we left while her assistant took care of the aftermath. I heard him ask the audience to leave the venue in an orderly fashion before reminding them of the gym store just as the home-side entrance/door closed behind us.

Ryujin then once again congratulated me on my victory and she admitted that I had surpassed her expectations by a lot, though she jokingly added that the last one was a lucky win. I could feel that she truly meant that as a joke, which surprised me a little but also led me to just smile and shrug at her before thanking her for the kind words. Following that polite little opening, Ryuijn began to talk about the stuff they were doing with the Marowak they had arranged. She asked for my input and I did mention a few points that they could improve based on what she mentioned.

Ryujin seemed happy with that, and a few moments after I had thrown in my two cents, she stopped in front of a door and let me in. It turned out to be something like a cozy reception room with single sofas and not her office. The first thing she did after we had taken our seats was pull out her phone before asking me for my phone number. I recited it and she called me after saving it so that I could just save the missed call. After that, she brought up Ryujin and asked if I had some dragon Magikarp I could sell her or some tips I could give her to fish one on her own.

I did not touch upon the former, but with Professor Serizawa out there, I chose to tell her that she could try using bait made using materials well-liked by dragons whenever she went fishing. If she got lucky she might capture a Magikarp that had some dragon blood in it even if she did not manage to fish up a Dragonkarp. All she then had to do after that was to try to work on expanding on that. I did not explicitly state it but I knew she understood that I meant that it be through either training/nutrition or selective breeding.
