Pokemon: Behold the Father of All Pokemons

Chapter 77: Chapter 75: Mew’s Hatching and the Dawn of Confusion

The day after Ethan announced the existence of "Evolution Fluid," the Internet erupted with debate and speculation. Online commenters wanted to know if ingesting the fluid could induce evolution in ordinary genetic organisms.

Many hopeful trainers flocked to Weibo to ask if the product could be adapted for non-Pokémon creatures. Ethan answered each question firmly, saying that the Evolution Fluid was only intended for Pokémon, and that it would not work on other genetically engineered life forms.

This answer crushed countless fantasies. Nevertheless, the idea of an item that could aid evolution remained in people's minds. Some Pokémon owners began to daydream about its release, and social media sites around the country and the world were abuzz.

Early the next morning, Ethan arrived at lab number two. The first person to approach him was James, who had a puzzled look on his face. "Mr. Grave," he said, "everyone here wants to know more about your Evolution Fluid. Why haven't we heard anything about it until now?"

Ethan shrugged slightly. "I only stumbled upon it while testing designs. You could say it was an accident. But don't get your hopes up," he added with a quick smile. "The chance of success is extremely small. Maybe only a few percent."

James frowned skeptically. "An accident, really?"

"Luck played its part," Ethan replied, making it clear that he preferred not to dwell on the subject. Instead, he headed straight for the incubation room, where the lab staff monitored each newly hatched Pokémon.

The gene seeds Ethan had introduced some time ago had developed into Pokémon eggs, including Growlithe, Happiny, and more. Each species sat quietly under soft lights, occasionally rocking on padded surfaces. The whole process resembled a miniature miracle in progress.

In a dim corner of the room stood an incubator containing Mew's egg, surrounded by a soft glow. It had been about a week since Ethan had configured its environment. By his calculations, Mew was due any day now.

Enthusiasm lit up his face. A Psychic-type Pokémon as elusive and fabled as Mew could unlock awesome abilities like Confusion, one of the mental powers he had longed to bring to life in the real world.

Though Ethan had once half-seriously imagined using Mew's Confusion to eliminate rivals like Charles or Jerry, the reality seemed more complicated.

Charles now traveled with bodyguards, rarely left his home, and maintained multiple security systems. Getting Mew into someone else's heavily guarded mansion was not feasible.

No matter how powerful a psychic Pokémon might be, cameras and guards would reveal the intrusion. Likewise, any attempt on Jerry's life would be equally risky. So Ethan scaled back those wilder plans, focusing instead on the research potential Mew could provide.

He moved quietly among the rows of eggs, pausing to check on a few that might hatch at any moment. After a short while, he noticed James peering around a corner, his eyes bright with excitement.

"Mr. Grave," James called, his voice shaking. "The egg in the corner is moving!"

Ethan stepped back, and they stood side by side, gazing at Mew's egg. It trembled slightly under the light of the lamps, shaking with signs of imminent hatching. Putting his ear to the shell, Ethan heard faint squeaks and the rattle of a creature trying to break free. A thrill ran through him. "Here it comes," he breathed, not wanting to shift his focus for a second.

Minutes ticked by. A small crack developed in the delicate surface of the egg, widening steadily. A shard of shell broke off, revealing a glimpse of pink fur inside. Everyone in the hatching room crowded closer, fascinated. Mew emerged little by little, and an audible silence fell among the onlookers.

Finally, the creature inside pushed through. Slender and pale pink, with a long, pointed tail that almost dwarfed its body, the newborn Mew blinked at the bright lights. It seemed to hover for a moment as it lurched forward, as if lifted by an invisible breeze, before falling gently to the mat.

The crowd gasped, hands covering their mouths in disbelief. "Did it just float for a second?" whispered one scientist.

James' eyes widened. "There were no wings or anything. Could it be... telekinesis?"

Ethan felt a surge of excitement in his chest. Even as Mew slid onto the padded surface, he tried to open his eyes, looking momentarily dazed. A pink, kitten-like face peered out, blinking sleepily at the humans around it. The long tail twitched with a curious grace.

Without hesitation, Ethan stepped forward. "It's just as I hoped," he said, trying to maintain an air of modesty. "Psychic. Mew has developed strong psychic powers." He spread his arms wide, facing James and the other staff. "My experiment has succeeded," he declared, his voice quavering with excitement. "We have just witnessed the birth of the world's first Psychic-type Pokémon."

In a burst of uncharacteristic enthusiasm, he threw his arms in the air in celebration. The rest of the lab staff was practically buzzing with excitement, exclaiming how amazing this was. The immediate question on their minds was how Mew had done it.

Most standard genetic organisms had no innate psychic abilities. The concept of psychics was usually the stuff of speculative fiction or rumor, but here it was, real and present.

After regaining some composure, Ethan turned to face the group. "His brain is exceptionally developed, giving him strong mental energy from the get-go. This energy manifests itself as psychism. I ask for your discretion in this matter," he added, his expression becoming serious. "Do not reveal Mew's existence to outsiders, at least for now."

James nodded. "Understood, Mr. Grave. We'll keep Mew under wraps." Each of the employees had signed extensive non-disclosure agreements with stiff penalties for violating them, and the deeper they dug into Pokémon Biotech's breakthroughs, the more they realized how valuable these discoveries were. None of them had any intention of letting such a big secret slip away.

Quiet chatter resumed in the background as Mew shook off the last shards of its shell and stood on shaky legs. His eyes flickered fully open, revealing a curious sparkle. Just then, the door burst open and Timmy peered in, his ears pricked up at the commotion. At the sight of Mew, Timmy hopped onto a counter, squealing in amazement.

Suddenly, Mew's form shimmered. In an instant, the pink kitten vanished, replaced by a perfect clone of Pikachu. The staff gasped again and stepped back in awe. "It can transform, too?" someone asked in an incredulous voice.

Ethan's breath caught in his throat. He had expected powerful psychic abilities, but a shape-shifting ability like Ditto's? That was beyond his predictions. "Psychic and shape-shifting," he murmured, staring at the small, Pikachu-like silhouette. "This is more incredible than I could have imagined."

Grinning, Ethan crouched down and reached out to the newly hatched Mew in Pikachu form. After a cautious moment, it gave a quiet chirp of recognition, blinking with the same wide, triangular eyes Mew had shown seconds before. "Welcome to our world," Ethan whispered, giving it a gentle pat on the head.

For a while, no one in the room spoke out loud. They simply watched the newborn wonder as it flexed between partial transformations, sometimes returning to a pink swirl of fur before shifting partially into a new shape. Mew was obviously testing the limits of its powers, a curious newborn discovering that it had a mind and body capable of defying every known limit of genetic biology.

Ethan felt a deep satisfaction blossom within him. Evolutionary fluid or not, this little Pokémon represented a quantum leap for Pokémon Biotech, a living testament to the uncharted frontiers of design. As Mew (or Pikachu, in this fleeting form) looked back at him, Ethan felt the door to a thousand new possibilities swing wide open.
