Chapter 37: Chapter 37: The Foundation of Survival & Encountering the Shorts Kid
The growth of any faction ultimately depended on higher-tier combat strength champions, for instance.
But even more crucial was the exclusive knowledge of breeding high-potential Pokémon. This kind of knowledge was passed down through generations, something that ordinary trainers had no access to.
Even if a lucky independent trainer managed to raise a few Pseudo-Elite-level Pokémon, they would inevitably hit a wall when trying to break through to true Elite status, unable to advance any further.
This was the reality of the world.
Finding a high-potential Pokémon by chance could help improve one's strength, but it wouldn't be enough to change their destiny.
Unless they were lucky enough to continuously encounter and raise high-potential Pokémon across multiple generations amassing a dozen or more over three lifetimes only then could they truly reach the top.
Silas didn't react much to Brock's words, simply nodding before taking his leave and heading back to the Pokémon Center.
Brock stood under the streetlight, watching Silas's figure disappear into the night before turning around and leaving.
"So there's an invisible barrier... No wonder I always felt something was off after buying Pokémon eggs from the black market."
"Even though Elite potential eggs are rare, they're not that rare. So why does the Pokémon League only see a handful of new Elite trainers each year?"
"If potential is just the stepping stone, then the real key to a Pokémon's strength lies in its training and development."
"I was able to fully unlock Combusken's Champion-level potential because of Zero. But for an average trainer, even if they get a Pokémon with Elite potential, they might struggle to push it beyond the Pseudo-Elite level."
"But why did Brock tell me all this? This information wasn't included in the documents I received."
"Is he trying to steer me toward becoming a Breeding Master? That wouldn't make sense if that were the case, why give me an Elite-potential Pokémon egg?"
Silas couldn't figure it out.
Pewter Gym's generosity had already caught him off guard, but Brock's attitude today was even more puzzling.
Then again, everyone had their own motives that was normal, wasn't it?
It wasn't as if Silas had revealed everything about himself to Pewter Gym either.
Even if they suspected he was hiding something, they had no way of knowing about Zero.
Unless he openly admitted it, they could only attribute his success to his talent and good fortune.
Pewter Gym's true intentions didn't matter.
At the end of the day, the foundation of his survival was Zero.
As long as he used Zero to strengthen himself, none of these external factors would be a problem.
After returning to his room, Silas finalized a training plan for Geodude and sent it to Brock.
Then, he started reviewing for the Breeder Certification Exam.
According to Brock, the Pokémon League's Breeding Center near Fuchsia City would be holding its annual certification test in four months.
Pewter Gym had secured Silas a spot for a Level 6 Breeder exam an opportunity to skip the lower levels.
Of course, Silas had no reason to refuse.
It was a huge advantage, and there was no way he could have obtained such a spot on his own.
Otherwise, he would have to climb the ranks one level at a time, which would take several years.
For him, the difficulty of the test wasn't much of a concern.
He studied for two hours, stopping only when the clock neared midnight.
That night, nothing eventful happened.
The next morning, Silas woke up to find that Brock had already transferred the payment for his custom training plan.
Five million Pokédollars.
All he could say was rich people sure were generous. If only he could get a few more clients like this.
After washing up, Silas followed his usual routine, heading into Viridian Forest with Pidgeot and Combusken for training.
"I challenge your Combusken!"
A sudden voice from behind startled both Silas and his Pokémon, breaking their moment of rest.
Silas silently scolded himself for letting his guard down. At the same time, he turned around to see who was dumb enough to approach a stranger in the wild like this.
A white t-shirt, yellow shorts, and a limited-edition cap this kid looked exactly like one of those Youngsters from the games.
Silas's expression turned a little strange. He pointed at himself. "You want to challenge my Combusken?"
"Of course! Who else is here besides you?" The Youngster widened his eyes.
Silas casually sat down on the ground, completely unfazed. "Battles between trainers usually have stakes, kid. What do you have to offer?"
He didn't even notice how he was talking down to someone his own age.
If this had been back in Viridian City's part of the forest, anyone who approached him like this would have already been taken care of.
After all, when exploring the wild, the biggest threats weren't just wild Pokémon.
In any situation, humans were the most dangerous creatures.
This Youngster was probably just a newbie, fresh into his Pokémon journey. Giving him a little reality check might be a good way to pass the time.
Silas wasn't taking him seriously at all.
Most regular kids only got their first Pokémon at 16 after finishing school. Only geniuses like Silas could graduate early.
By now, his strength was far ahead of his peers.
The Youngster hesitated when he heard Silas's words, struggling to come up with something.
"If you have nothing, just head back. Don't wander around the wild aimlessly," Silas said, waving him off.
"Who says I have nothing?! I'll bet this!"
Flushing red with embarrassment, the Youngster pulled a stone out of his pocket.
A broken fossil.
Silas glanced at it and was about to refuse, but then he remembered his fossil collection project. He hesitated.
"Alright, Combusken, just play with him a little."
"If I lose, I'll give you three days' worth of Pokéblocks."
The first sentence was directed at Combusken. The second was for the Youngster.
"Cha!" Combusken nodded and stepped forward.
The Youngster, excited that Silas had agreed, quickly pulled out a Poké Ball.
"Go, Geodude!"
"Hah! Your Combusken might be a higher level, but Fire-type moves don't do much against Geodude! And early on, Combusken barely learns any Fighting-type moves!"
The Youngster sounded confident.
"Geodude, use Sand Attack on its eyes!"
"Free battle," Silas commanded lazily.
There was no need to waste effort against such a weak opponent.
This Geodude was no different from the ones Silas had stepped on in Mt. Moon completely insignificant.
Combusken easily dodged the sand with its natural speed.
Then, without even using a move, it rushed forward and started pounding on Geodude using pure physical strength.
"Hang in there, Geodude! Use Rollout to escape!" the Youngster shouted.
But Combusken wasn't giving Geodude a chance to fight back or flee.
Even without using any energy-based attacks, its raw power overwhelmed Geodude. In no time, the Rock-type Pokémon was knocked out.
"Geodude!" The Youngster looked devastated.
Silas stood up. "Leave the fossil and head to the Pokémon Center. Battles there are more suited for you."
He didn't care how badly the kid took the loss this was a lesson he needed to learn.
Veteran trainers loved humbling rookies like this.
