"Huh?"

Feeling a somewhat eerie gaze, Kai suddenly shivered, as if something unclean was watching him.

"What is it?"

Turning around, Kai noticed that Caterpie was still resting quietly in its little bed, likely asleep, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

"Weird..."

A look of confusion crossed Kai's face as he scanned the warehouse and the living room outside, but he didn't find anything unusual.

It's not that Kai was overreacting. It's just that, due to the existence of Pokémon, some urban legends from his past life had gradually become localized in this world—legends like the eight-foot-tall Gardevoir and Hatterene, the Gothitelle in the subway, the slit-mouthed Jynx, the spoon-wielding killer, or the human-faced Mightyena.

Each one was more terrifying than the last.

Most of these stories were derived from Pokémon with eerie traits.

Ghost-type and Psychic-type Pokémon, in particular, often have mischievous personalities and enjoy playing pranks on people. 

There have been cases where they've snuck into homes in cities or towns, using their special abilities to manifest paranormal phenomena, scaring residents out of their wits. As a result, similar horror stories have become quite popular.

In reality, most prankster Pokémon are from the Gastly or Misdreavus lines, and their antics are usually harmless.

In more serious cases, Pokémon like Gothita and Drifloon, which lure children into mysterious worlds, are a bit more concerning.

Even worse are Pokémon like Hypno, which specialize in sleep-inducing tactics... Ahem, let's not delve too deeply into that.

Numerous actual cases have been documented, and it's no wonder that many people and Trainers still keep their distance from these two types of Pokémon, if not outright despise them.

It's genuinely terrifying.

In contrast, despite being called "Dark-type," most Dark-type Pokémon are actually better, as they only engage in simple pranks to satisfy their mischievous nature.

"Hmm, probably not."

After a moment of thought, Kai averted his gaze.

At first, he did suspect that some Pokémon might have snuck into his house.

After all, even though cities and towns have regulations to manage wild Pokémon, and official departments don't allow potentially dangerous Pokémon to roam freely, Pokémon with all sorts of strange abilities can still bypass their control and infiltrate urban areas.

However, Caterpie, whose senses far surpass Kai's, didn't react at all, so it might just be that Kai was being overly sensitive.

"I've probably been too tired lately. I'll make sure to rest properly after this is over."

Sighing, Kai shook his head slightly.

He still needed to prepare the essentials for their outdoor training.

Outdoor training isn't a picnic or camping trip where you can go in the morning and return home by night. The presence of wild Pokémon and their groups makes the wilderness extremely dangerous.

Kai had already planned to take Caterpie to a selected location for at least two days of survival training, so the necessary equipment and tools had to be prepared without the slightest error.

This was a matter of life and death.

Kai dug out quite a few things from the warehouse at home, such as a sturdy tent, durable yet lightweight Trainer protective gear, and a brand-new hiking backpack... 

The backpack wasn't really necessary, as the system had given Kai a storage space that couldn't hold living things. Although it wasn't very large, it was definitely enough.

Ensuring swift movement is undoubtedly a top priority for a Trainer active in the wild.

Afterward, Kai took Caterpie to the department store.

They bought some repellent sprays at a shop specializing in Pokémon items to ensure the safety of their campsite. 

They also picked up fire-starting tools, a sleeping bag, and a multi-functional pocketknife from special stores to make sure Kai himself could adapt to the living conditions.

Canned food, drinking water, Pokémon food, and Pokéblocks had naturally been prepared earlier.

Kai also bought a convenient waist pouch to hold some Potions and berries that could cure status conditions.

It was a sense of security at its finest.

However, the price of security was the sacrifice of his wallet...

"Ouch, that hurts."

Painfully putting away his significantly lighter wallet, Kai turned to Caterpie, his words filled with unwavering determination.

"The move practice and physical training we've been doing were all preparation for actual battles. This time, we're going all out and sweeping through the wild Pokémon gathering spots!"

"Mii!"

Caterpie, who had been itching for action for a while, naturally responded to Kai's words with excitement.

It had long wanted to use 'Dragon Ascent' on other Caterpie.

Just imagining itself mercilessly one-shotting a group of Caterpie that only knew 'String Shot' and 'Tackle,' farming their experience—even Metapod and Butterfree—to rapidly grow stronger, Caterpie felt like it was on a high.

Kai kicked Caterpie's tail, then took out a Poké Ball and shot a red beam to recall the big green caterpillar. After that, he boarded a bus heading to the suburbs.

The journey wasn't too short, taking about an hour.

During this time, Kai sat in his seat, using his phone to review information about their destination—[Ancient Sword Mountain].

[Ancient Sword Mountain] is a famous tourist spot in the Dayan Region.

It got its name because its peak rises like a sword piercing the clouds. Legend has it that in ancient times, a Legendary Pokémon lived atop the mountain, so the peak is perpetually covered in snow that even sunlight can't melt. The cold there rivals that of a real snowy mountain...

[Ancient Sword Mountain] boasts a rich ecosystem and breathtaking natural scenery, with an environment so beautiful it's almost unreal.

Although, with the development and exploration by the Pokémon League, [Ancient Sword Mountain] has gradually been developed by human technology into a safe tourist area. However, parts of it still remain outside the Dayan League's full control, and many areas are untouched.

The land is home to numerous wild Pokémon, including some that are so powerful even experienced Trainers find them troublesome. As a result, the League has restricted access to areas where humans can't venture.

However, some areas with weaker wild Pokémon have become popular training grounds for many Trainers.

The Dayan League has gradually opened up some free zones in response to Trainers' needs. As long as you're a Trainer, you can bring your Pokémon into these areas for training... After all, if danger arises, you can always contact the patrol team for rescue. Trainers generally know their limits, so there haven't been any serious casualties in the free zones of [Ancient Sword Mountain] so far.

This time, Kai's destination is one of these areas where the wild Pokémon aren't overwhelmingly strong.

He and Caterpie plan to showcase their skills there, seriously experiencing actual combat and testing the results of their training so far.

"Who knows, we might even get lucky and find some treasures."

Leaning against the window, Kai's thoughts began to wander.
