The crowd murmured in anticipation as Paul stepped forward, pulling a Pokéball from his belt.

With a flash of light, a small, fiery figure emerged, its body covered in reddish-orange scales, flickering embers rising from its mouth.

Magby, the Live Coal Pokémon.

Type: Fire

A pre-evolved form of Magmar. Though small, its fire burns at over 1,000°F when fighting to survive.

Elliot tilted his head, unimpressed. A pure Fire-type? Not the worst match-up, but not the best either.

He placed a reassuring hand on Deino's head. "We're here to incapacitate, not kill."

Deino let out a low, rumbling growl—an affirmation of his trainer's words.

The referee raised his hand.

"Trainers ready? 3… 2… 1… BATTLE!"

Before Elliot could command, a faint ding echoed in his mind. A System Quest popped up.

Elliot smirked. Well, that's a nice bonus.

Paul wasted no time. "Baby-Doll Eyes!"

Magby's large, innocent eyes shimmered as it let out an adorable coo. The move lowered Deino's Attack stat by one stage and had priority, meaning it activated instantly.

However, Paul forgot one crucial thing.

Deino was semi-blind.

The cute effect had no impact on him.

Elliot chuckled. "Nice try. Nasty Plot!"

Deino let out a deep growl, its special attack rising sharply.

Paul grit his teeth. "Scratch!"

Magby rushed forward, claws glowing white as it lunged at Deino.

Elliot stayed calm. "Wait for it…"

The moment Magby got close—

"Dragon Breath!"

Deino opened its mouth, unleashing a stream of blue, draconic flames. The attack engulfed Magby, sending it tumbling backward with a pained cry.

When the smoke cleared, Magby struggled to stand, its body twitching. A small burn mark sizzled on its shoulder—a side effect of Dragon Breath.

Paul clenched his fists. "Damn it! Magby, use Ember!"

Magby inhaled, gathering fire in its mouth—

"Dodge left! Then Bite!"

Deino swiftly sidestepped, the ember barely grazing his side before lunging at Magby. His fangs sank into its body, knocking the fire-type out cold.

The referee raised his flag.

"Magby is unable to battle! Elliot Kane is the winner!"

The crowd clapped, some murmuring in approval.

Paul sighed, recalling his Magby. "Damn… you got me."

Elliot smirked, offering a hand. "Good fight."

Paul hesitated before shaking it. "Yeah. But don't get cocky—you got lucky with that burn."

Elliot just shrugged. "Maybe."

Meanwhile, in the stands, Lance leaned forward, eyes narrowing.

"A Deino... and a trainer who actually knows how to use it?"

He pulled out his PokéGear, dialing a number.

"Keep an eye on a kid named Elliot Kane.But don't interfere—just watch his progress."

As he hung up, he smirked.

"This one might be interesting."

As Elliot exited the stadium, his System chimed.

[Quest Completed!]

Reward: Choose a TM for Deino!

Elliot scrolled through his options. Dragon Claw, Thunder Fang, Dark Pulse…

After some thought, he picked Dark Pulse—a strong special move that worked well with Nasty Plot.

With his winnings—750 Pokédollars—he headed to the Pokémon Center, using his League discount to rent a room.

As he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, he ruffled Deino's fur. "We made it through our first battle."

Deino purred in response.
