Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Misconceptions
In the games, Supersonic only has a 55% accuracy—barely better than Sleep Powder. That means, in reality, its chances of confusing an opponent aren't that high. The roar that Charmander let out just now wasn't just an attack; it was also a way to snap itself out of any lingering disorientation.
Sure enough, after getting hit by Supersonic, Charmander's gaze wavered for a moment. But through sheer willpower, it forced itself to focus again and immediately sank its teeth into Zubat.
Many beginner trainers have a common misconception about the Zubat evolutionary line—they assume the entire line is extremely frail, especially Crobat, which, with its sleek frame, looks like a typical glass cannon.
But that's far from the truth. While Crobat's endurance isn't top-tier, it's by no means fragile.
This is a common mistake among novice trainers—judging a Pokémon's durability solely by its appearance.
Another Pokémon often misjudged in this way is Emboar, the Fire-type starter from Unova. Despite its massive build, its bulk is actually lower than Crobat's in practice.
And then there's Rampardos, which Maki had encountered not long ago—a classic example of a Pokémon that looks terrifyingly strong but is, in reality, a glass cannon.
Of course, Zubat was still at a natural disadvantage against Charmander in terms of raw strength. After taking two powerful attacks back-to-back, it was unable to continue battling.
Maki had a good reason for prioritizing Zubat. Its ability to fly was an inherent advantage, and with access to Supersonic for disruption, it would be a constant nuisance if left unchecked.
Now that Charmander had dealt with Zubat, the battle between Charizard and Luxray was still ongoing—but Charizard had gained absolute dominance. In the brief moment Maki glanced over, Charizard landed another precise Dragon Pulse on Luxray.
Charizard was brimming with confidence, while Luxray was visibly exhausted, its body covered in numerous wounds. Its health was already hanging by a thread.
Luxray panted heavily, and its trainer, Ridley Watton, wasn't faring much better. Beads of sweat dripped down his forehead. He knew full well that he was no match for the person in front of him. The rest of his allies? They were all rookies, having only recently joined the organization.
After all, their group had just been formed, so they weren't exactly selective in recruitment—most of them were just random hires.
Realizing he was in a dire situation, Ridley made a swift decision—he had to call for backup. A Dratini, a pseudo-legendary Pokémon… none of it mattered if he didn't make it out alive. If the League caught him, he doubted he'd have a pleasant fate.
Yet, no matter how many distress signals he sent, there was no response. The silence on the other end only made him more anxious.
With Zubat out of the way, Koffing didn't last much longer against Charmander either. Though it tried desperately to evade, it was soon struck down by Charmander's Fire Spin and finished off with a bite.
As for Lance, commanding both Charizard and Dratini at the same time was effortless. Using Extreme Speed, Dratini swiftly dealt with its own opponent.
Throughout the exchange of attacks, Luxray remained at a disadvantage. Eventually, it succumbed to Charizard's relentless flames and was knocked out of the fight.
Ridley Watton took a step back, his face drained of color. At that moment, his communicator suddenly vibrated. He grabbed it like a drowning man clutching a lifeline.
But after reading the message, he turned even paler. His hands trembled, and the device slipped from his grasp, clattering onto the floor.
He had been abandoned.
Or rather, those above him were too busy saving themselves to bother with him.
This time, it seemed like the Pokémon League wasn't pulling any punches.
His gaze darted toward the exit. Without hesitation, he turned and bolted toward the door, desperate to escape. In his panic, he even tripped over his own feet at the start—but that didn't stop him from scrambling forward as fast as he could.
"Charizard."
Lance uttered the command with a calm certainty.
Did this fool really think he could outrun Charizard on foot? Even Dratini, which didn't have legs, could outspeed him without effort.
With a single swipe of its claw, Charizard slammed Ridley onto the ground. It had held back just enough to keep him from serious injury—otherwise, that blow could have landed him straight in a forensic textbook.
"ROAR!"
To drive the point home, Charizard let out a burst of flame right in front of Ridley's face. The man flinched violently—then promptly fainted.
"My Charmander may not be as strong as Charizard," Maki said with a deceptively pleasant smile, "but I think it's more than enough to give you guys a little burn."
Charmander, playing along, spat out a small Ember to emphasize the point. Its expression practically screamed: I'm super fierce!
The remaining grunts glanced at Ridley, who was now unconscious beneath Charizard's claw. His eyes were tightly shut, and they dared not check if he was still breathing. In their fear, they assumed the worst.
At this point, they had no choice but to nod in agreement with whatever Maki said.
With Lance and Maki eliminating the key members of the group, the Pokémon League swiftly moved in to shut down the arcade above, then descended underground to take the rest of them into custody.
As they stepped out of the League's cordon around the arcade, even Maki failed to notice that someone had quietly approached them.
"How did the mission go?"
A low, almost chilling voice came from behind them, finally alerting Lance and Maki to the presence of their visitor.
"Mission was a success, Elite Four Agatha."
Lance, seemingly familiar with the voice, turned and gave a respectful bow.
"Elite Four Agatha."
Maki felt a cold sweat forming on his back, but he kept his composure and followed Lance's example, offering a polite nod of acknowledgment.
The woman before them wore a flowing purple dress and held a wooden cane adorned with a pale violet gemstone. Her expression was unreadable as she gazed at the two of them.
"This is Maki, my friend. He helped me a lot during the mission," Lance explained quickly when he noticed Agatha's attention shifting toward Maki.
"Honestly, Lance probably would've completed the mission just fine without me," Maki added hurriedly. Given Charizard's overwhelming strength, Lance could have easily taken down Ridley and the others on his own.
"Hmph! If you couldn't handle something this trivial, I'd say those old geezers in your clan need to get their eyes checked!"
Agatha snorted, cutting them both off. She tapped her cane sharply against the ground.
