Chapter 2: Ch 2 - A present from Giovanni
Giovanni fell silent upon hearing the news. Are the Rockets truly that formidable? It certainly seemed so. Almost all members of Team Rocket, including the senior management, had come from humble beginnings. In a sense, Giovanni was indeed a Trainer in earnest; he wasn't merely pretending. If it weren't for Team Rocket, he might have been just another gym leader.
However, following the tragic deaths of his mother and younger brother, Giovanni adopted a much more extreme approach. He became desperate for power, wanting to achieve his ideals within his lifetime. What he didn't anticipate was that a few good deeds by certain Team Rocket members would attract his naïve nephew, who expressed a desire to join the organization.
What a fool! Still, some of what Arthur said made sense to Giovanni, but he felt helpless against the Pokémon Trainers aligned with the Alliance. "You should understand that I am the owner of Viridian Gym, and I will not allow you to join Team Rocket!" Giovanni declared sternly. Arthur looked at Giovanni with confusion. He wanted to shout, "Stop pretending! I already know your true identity!" but he realized that revealing this would complicate matters, especially given that Giovanni's identity was a closely guarded secret.
Arthur's father had never told him, so who could have imagined that a child with the heroic name Arthur would have such a villainous uncle? "Uncle, didn't you say I should set a great goal and strive for it? My ideal ambition is to join Team Rocket and help them overthrow the Alliance. This world is far too harsh for ordinary people," Arthur asserted firmly. "It's like the Starter Pokémon that costs five million to receive, which are mostly monopolized by the Alliance. In contrast, Pokémon of the same quality only cost between 2.5 million and 3 million through Team Rocket's special channels. As I understand it, the original price of a Pokémon is $500, and the breeding cost is less than $100, but the Alliance sells potions at ten times the profit! Additionally, some powerful Pokémon can only be obtained through certain elite families.
While I have no issues with family legacies—after all, they are often passed down through generations—some areas are restricted to only certain individuals, excluding civilians. That's simply unjust. Though the Alliance claims to allow those who contribute to enter, the truth is that most of those individuals are second-generation members who have done little to earn this privilege. Yes, Team Rocket has its share of problems, and some individuals act unreasonably, but I truly believe that I can help change all of that!"
Giovanni fell silent, acknowledging that Arthur was right. He wanted to encourage Arthur to pursue his dreams, not to overthrow the Alliance, but to strive to become a Pokémon Master. He wrestled with the urge to refuse Arthur's request, even considering confronting him. But Giovanni realized that his nephew was even more determined and stubborn. Even if he revealed his identity as the boss of the Rockets, Arthur would likely continue to support him without hesitation. Regarding Arthur's belief that he could change Team Rocket, Giovanni knew there was no chance of that happening.
After all, Team Rocket was not a governmental entity like the Alliance; some issues would simply be overlooked. Fortunately, Giovanni thought of another approach. "Let's put this matter aside for now. Your journey starts in just a few days, and I have prepared a starter Pokémon for you!" As he spoke, Giovanni retrieved a safe from beside him.
"What kind of Pokémon is in there?" Arthur asked, curiosity piquing his interest. He never expected the boss of Team Rocket to gift him anything ordinary like a Pikachu. It was unfortunate that his own system had not yet fully activated; otherwise, he might have identified the egg's contents. "You'll find out soon enough. This is the dream Pokémon of 99% of Ground Type Trainers!" Giovanni said, giving a meaningful look at the box in Arthur's hands.
He reflected on how he and his younger brother didn't have such advantages back in the day. Giovanni had even started with a Weedle! Nonetheless, he had raised that Weedle to unparalleled heights while now, most precious Pokémon were just a request away for him, igniting little interest. "Ground type?" Arthur thought, contemplating the various possibilities. "I'm heading out now! Be careful, and call me if you need anything!" Giovanni warned sternly before leaving in a hurry.
As he exited Arthur's house, he whispered to a woman lurking in the shadows, "Let him join. Inform him that he is joining the Intelligence Department, posing as a regular Rookie Trainer. He will serve Team Rocket by gathering intelligence."
Matori's face became scrunched up, she never thought that her boss would give her a job like this.
Isn't this just glorified babysitting?
But since it's Giovanni's order, Matori will naturally execute it well, and she is not disgusted with such things, this must represent Giovanni's trust in herself! "yes that must be it" she smirked to herself.
As soon as Arthur received the admission notice from the Team Rocket, which made Arthur laughed "Giovanni sucking up to his nephew imagine his subordinate's faces".
