Chapter 142: Chapter 142: The Pursuit of Mew
Chapter 142: The Pursuit of Mew
The research on Mewtwo had reached a critical stage.
Team Rocket had been under intense scrutiny from the Pokémon League after suffering massive blows recently. Any activity from them, no matter how minor, immediately drew the League's attention. This relentless pursuit left Lambda and the organization in dire straits.
Yet, the progress on Mewtwo's research demanded immediate access to Mew's genetic information for further development. Despite the League's surveillance over all their registered elites, Team Rocket had unregistered members who operated covertly.
Two of these unrecorded elites had been dispatched to track Mew's whereabouts.

"Commander Lambda, we've detected Mew near Waveguide Town!"
The voice crackled through the communicator, interspersed with the faint sound of equipment humming in the background. It was clear they were working in a lab.
"Are you certain?" Lambda's tone was both tense and excited. "I can't leave my current position, but you must keep following it! Don't lose track! I'll join you in a few days."

Team Rocket Underground Research Facility
Lambda stood before a large containment tank filled with a glowing liquid. Within, a humanoid embryo floated, its features just beginning to resemble those of a Pokémon. His eyes gleamed with obsession as he muttered, "Born from Mew's genes, you will not only replicate its power… You will surpass it! Mewtwo will be the ultimate Pokémon!"
His expression darkened as he cursed under his breath, "If only that useless Athena had completed her mission, we wouldn't be in such a precarious position now."
---
Five Days Later
Mew's luck seemed to have taken a turn for the worse over the past five days. It had found no suitable treasures to aid the World Tree. To conserve its own energy and sustain the World Tree's functions, Mew had refrained from using Teleport. It resorted to simple psychic levitation to move.
Despite its efforts, the World Tree's vitality waned further with each passing day.
"Mew…" (I really want to hear Hikaru's stories again…)
Mew shook its tiny head, trying to dispel the fatigue that had set in. Its connection to the World Tree was absolute—if the tree fell into dormancy, so would Mew.
And Mew knew all too well how long the World Tree's slumber could last. Entire lifetimes might pass before it awoke again. By then, would Hikaru even still be around?
"Mew…" Determined, it rallied its dwindling strength and ventured deeper into the forest. At the very least, it resolved to hear the conclusion of the Magikarp story before succumbing to sleep.
But in its weakened state, Mew failed to notice the two figures shadowing it.
---
Two Team Rocket agents trailed Mew through the dense forest. One of them, accompanied by a Murkrow, whispered to the other, "It really seems like Mew is 'sick.' It hasn't used Teleport even once."
The other nodded, gripping a tracking device tightly. "It's the last day. Commander Lambda should be arriving soon."
The pressure of tracking Mew had been immense. They knew full well that even as Master-level Trainers, they stood no chance against a mythical Pokémon like Mew in its prime.
"Let's stay focused. If not for its current state, we'd never have been able to tail it this long."
---
Not far behind, a raspy but authoritative voice interrupted their conversation. "You two can leave now."
The agents froze. Turning around, they immediately saluted upon recognizing the speaker. "Yes, Commander Lambda."
A Honchkrow flapped its wings, summoning a swirl of shadows to envelop the two agents, who swiftly disappeared from sight.
Lambda stepped forward, his gaze fixed on the direction Mew had flown. A predatory grin spread across his face. "Mew, I only need a fragment of your genetic material. Just one small piece to complete my masterpiece!"
He cackled maniacally, his laughter echoing through the forest. The thought of Mew's current weakened state filled him with a boldness he wouldn't normally possess.
---
It didn't take long for Lambda to locate Mew. The tiny Pokémon wobbled in the air, its movements erratic as it scanned its surroundings. Its fragile state made it clear that it was even weaker than Lambda had anticipated.
His mind raced with possibilities. Why not take this opportunity to capture Mew outright? With it in his possession, the research on Mewtwo would be unstoppable.
Perched atop a tree branch, Lambda issued his command. "Murkrow, use Mean Look! Honchkrow, follow up with Sucker Punch!"
The sinister energy of Mean Look emanated from Murkrow's glowing eyes and shot toward Mew.
"Mew?"
The mythical Pokémon sensed the danger but, in its current state, couldn't evade in time. The black energy enveloped it, sealing away its ability to use Teleport. Though it narrowly dodged Honchkrow's Sucker Punch, Mew turned to face its attackers.
"Mew?" (Why are you attacking me?)
It projected its voice directly into Lambda's mind. But his response was anything but sympathetic.
"Mew! Come with me! My research depends on you!" Lambda's voice dripped with obsession.
He wasted no time. "Murkrow, Honchkrow, use Mean Look again! Block all its escape routes!"
---
Mew's frustration began to boil over. Despite its exhaustion, it retaliated with a surge of psychic energy. A tidal wave of telekinetic force slammed into the two Murkrow, sending them crashing to the ground. Even at a disadvantage, Mew's raw power as a mythical Pokémon was undeniable.
But the effort left it gasping for breath, its feverish state worsening.
Lambda's expression twisted into one of both awe and greed. "Such power! You truly are the ancestor of all Pokémon. I can't wait to see what Mewtwo will become!"
He released two more Murkrow from their Poké Balls. "Let's see how long you can keep this up, Mew!"
---
Though battered, Mew gritted its teeth, determined to hold its ground. But with every passing moment, its strength waned further, and Lambda's relentless assault showed no signs of stopping.
