Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Determined Turtwig and Training
A seed shot out from the sprout on Turtwig's head, landing directly in Gible's mouth.
Leech Seed!
As soon as the seed appeared, it exploded into life, sprouting thorny vines that filled Gible's mouth, growing outward in an effort to break past its teeth.
The scene was both bizarre and oddly "harmonious."
A wave of discomfort surged through Gible's body, and it instinctively wanted to spit Turtwig out.
But Gible knew that it had only managed to push Turtwig into this position because of its element of surprise.
If it let Turtwig go, and the opponent became prepared, Gible would surely lose!
"Hold on! Use Fire Fang and Dragon Claw!"
At this critical moment, Paul issued a decisive command.
Gible's eyes gleamed with resolve. Flames erupted around its teeth, instantly burning the encroaching vines to ash, with the fire steadily extending deeper.
While Fire Fang inflicted significant damage on Turtwig, Gible's claws glowed green as it unleashed a close-range barrage of Dragon Claw attacks.
For a brief moment, Turtwig regretted its choice. Leech Seed was effective, but it had completely filled Gible's space, leaving no room to execute other moves. All Turtwig could do was rely on its innate survival instinct: Struggle.
But it was futile!
As time passed, Turtwig's movements weakened until it eventually went still. Only then did Gible release its grip, spitting out Turtwig's scorched head. The defeated Pokémon collapsed to the ground.
Another victory for Gible.
"Poké Ball, go!"
With the battle won, Paul pulled out a Poké Ball and tossed it.
The ball hit Turtwig's body, transforming it into red light and drawing it inside.
Ding! Ding! Ding! Snap!
After a few shakes, the Poké Ball burst open.
Despite its injuries, Turtwig reappeared on the ground, struggling to support its battered body. Its gaze fixed on Gible, eyes brimming with defiance and determination.
Moments ago, Turtwig had truly been unable to fight. For now to resist capture and stand again was no longer a matter of strength—it was sheer willpower.
"Gib~"
Surprised by Turtwig's resolve, Gible refrained from attacking. Instead, it smiled and gave Turtwig a thumbs-up.
You've got guts, buddy.
"Bzzt-bzzt!"
Nearby, Elekid stood with arms crossed, nodding in approval.
Even it had to admit that if Gible had caught it like that, it wouldn't have been able to escape.
"Vul~!"
"Ursa~!"
"Bliss~!"
The other Pokémon chimed in, offering their respect to Turtwig.
Receiving such recognition, Turtwig could no longer hold on. With a faint smile, it collapsed to the ground.
"Blissey, use Heal Pulse."
Paul finally spoke.
"Blissey~!"
Following the command, Blissey wasted no time in healing Turtwig.
After the treatment, Turtwig's injuries were mostly healed. As it lifted its head, it saw Paul standing in front of it, a new Poké Ball placed on the ground.
"Twiiig~"
Without hesitation, Turtwig raised its "hand" and tapped the button on the Poké Ball. It was drawn inside without any struggle.
Looking at the Poké Ball in his hand, Paul's thoughts wandered to memories of another Turtwig—a Torterra from his past.
After a moment, he took out his Pokédex to scan the newly captured Pokémon.
Turtwig
Type: Grass
Ability: Overgrow (Boosts the power of Grass-type moves when HP is low)
Gender: Male
Moves: Crunch, Tackle, Razor Leaf, Leech Seed, Solar Beam, Energy Ball, Sand Tomb, Growth, Synthesis
Height: ...
"Not bad. It's worth keeping."
After reviewing the data and recalling its performance in battle, Paul pocketed the Poké Ball with a satisfied nod.
A Pokémon with this level of talent was already on par with Elekid.
Its ability to learn so many moves not only demonstrated strong learning potential but also reflected its extensive battle experience.
Over time, Pokémon often forget rarely used moves if they don't train or battle consistently. This is one of the reason why most Pokémon in the real world only know three or four moves.
The Pokémon behind Paul seemed pleased that Turtwig would be staying. A team full of hardworking, talented Pokémon created an environment where everyone could grow stronger together.
There was no room for Pokémon who could drag down the team's spirit—a sentiment that Paul and his Pokémon all shared.
"Come out." Paul said, tossing the Poké Ball.
"Twig~!"
Now in better shape after its treatment, Turtwig greeted the surrounding Pokémon and began getting acquainted.
"Let's do a test. Turtwig, use Tackle on Elekid. Elekid, counter with Quick Attack."
After giving the Pokémon a few minutes to familiarize themselves, Paul initiated a quick test for Turtwig.
"Twig~!"
"Bzzt-bzzt!"
The two Pokémon exchanged a glance. Their expressions sharpened as they focused on each other. After putting some distance between them, they charged forward.
Turtwig's Tackle carried incredible momentum, its small body bursting with surprising power.
Elekid's Quick Attack relied on speed, enhancing its impact, and seemed slightly more explosive than Turtwig's move.
When the two collided, they appeared evenly matched at first.
But to everyone's surprise, within seconds, Elekid began to falter.
"That's enough."
Paul ended the test, stopping the Pokémon from continuing the clash.
Unlike Tackle, Quick Attack wasn't suited for prolonged strength-based struggles. In a contest of raw power, Tackle proved superior.
For Turtwig to overpower Elekid within just a few seconds was a testament to its strength and mastery of the move.
While Tackle wasn't particularly practical in battles, its high proficiency would make it easier for Turtwig to learn more powerful moves like Take Down, Double-Edge, and Giga Impact in the future.
"This one's got a solid physique. Perfect for testing out a new idea." Paul thought, pleased. He then instructed the rest of his Pokémon to begin their training:
"Today, no battles. Train your moves individually. Reflect on your previous fights and focus on improving your moves' power. Work on four aspects: speed, strength, burst power, and concentration."
"Elekid, focus on Thunder Punch. Work on channeling electricity to a single point to increase its piercing power."
Elekid had been improving rapidly. Previously, training had focused on stamina, speed, and control. Now it's time to work on strength and burst power.
"Gible, train Dragon Claw and Fire Fang. Focus on energy control and try to extend the range of your Dragon- and Fire-type attacks."
With its limited reach due to short limbs, Gible could benefit greatly from techniques like "Fire Projection" and "Dragon Claw Shadow," which would extend its attack range.
"Ursaring, keep working on Fire Punch. Focus on enduring the flames. The goal is to burn yourself. Once you can achieve that, you'll be completing the first phase."
If Ursaring could burn itself, it would mean it could activate its Guts ability at will, eliminating the need for items like Flame Orbs. Pairing this with an Eviolite would give it a massive advantage in a close combat.
"Bzzt!"
"Gib~"
"Ursa~"
The three Pokémon responded and began their training.
