There was still some time before Fennekin's physical examination was complete. Link settled into a chair in the Pokémon Center's lobby, opened one of the books, and started another simulation.

[Restart]

[You know that Senior Tominaga Ryo said there are monsters and ghosts in the school building, but you all act separately anyway. What a group of undisciplined people. So, you immediately call everyone together and suggest acting as a team.]

[The problem is that Aoi-senpai is missing and could be in danger at any moment. The school building is too big; moving together would be safe but too slow.]

[After considering your suggestion, Takuma decides it's better to split into pairs. Takuma and Minoru form one group, while you and Labramon form another.]

[You then turn to Ryo with a sly grin. "Senior Ryo, you don't want to wander alone and get skewered by a random monster, do you?"]

[Tominaga Ryo has joined the team!]

[With Gunnimon's subtle combat power and Labramon's assistance, you shift to righteous mode, successfully defeating wandering monsters with teamwork.]

[Data-type Foxmon, Virus-type Gunnimon, and Vaccine-type Labramon complement each other, handling enemies of equal or even slightly higher power without trouble.]

[Unfortunately, after searching the school building for hours, you find nothing.]

[Thankfully, Takuma and Minoru report back with useful information. They encountered a ghost in the music classroom, discovered Spidermon in the gymnasium, and found an underground passage leading there from the restaurant.]

[Hearing this, Labramon grows anxious to save Shibuya Aoi. The group decides to confront Spidermon tonight.]

[You hesitate. Can five growth-stage Digimon defeat one mature-stage Digimon and its subordinates?]

[With Gunnimon being largely ineffective and Foxmon's data-type weakness to Spidermon, your team's chances seem slim. But with no better strategy, you forge ahead.]

Link couldn't help but smirk. This feels like one of those "evolve during battle" setups. Takuma, it's your time to shine!

[A few minutes later, the group navigates the secret tunnel beneath the restaurant, arriving at the gymnasium shrouded in spider webs.]

[You spot Shibuya Aoi unconscious and trapped in a web behind Spidermon.]

[Labramon charges in, enraged. The battle begins.]

[Two large Spidermon and three normal-sized subordinates emerge to protect their leader. Takuma rallies his courage to lead the charge.]

"Five growth stages versus four mature stages? Really?"

[Labramon rushes too far ahead and is impaled by the leader Spidermon's Piercing Poison Needle, dissipating into data.]

"…"

[An unexpected twist: with Labramon's death, Aoi-senpai vanishes into light as well.]

[The group panics, but retreat is impossible—Spidermon blocks the exit. One by one, the remaining Digimon and their tamers fall. Even Foxmon, despite its strength, is no match for Spidermon.]

[Simulation ends. Reward: 200 gold coins, 200 bits, and 1 Guardian Crystal.]

[Guardian Crystal: Enhances the target's defensive abilities. Its hexagonal pattern resembles a shield. Will defense strategies evolve?]

The results left Link feeling frustrated.

Five growth-stage Digimon against four mature-stage ones was a losing formula. Gunnimon's contribution was negligible, and Labramon's reckless charge sealed their fate. Without a significant power advantage, they were destined to fail.

The only consolation was the resources gained by defeating wandering Digimon along the way.

Link pulled the Guardian Crystal from the system inventory. Holding it, he felt a faint protective field enveloping him—clearly an effective defensive boost.

However, the crystal was useless for Fennekin. Not wanting to carry it by hand, he slotted it into one of Pokomon's three equipment slots in the [Cultivation] interface.

Meanwhile, Link equipped himself with the Learning Crystal, which displayed the following effect: [Intelligence +2 Bonus].

The boost to his intelligence made Link realize just how ordinary his initial smarts had been. With 11 Intelligence and a +2 bonus, he felt better equipped to process the stack of reference books he'd borrowed.

It's always better to sharpen the tools before starting work.

The addition of teammates also unlocked new options in the [Free Battle] mode. Link could now deploy multiple Digimon for larger-scale battles.

Replacing the opponent with Spidermon, Link sent out five strong Digimon. After a 10-minute fight, they earned 100 Bits—equivalent to 600 Bits per hour.

However, the win rate was inconsistent, making manual battles more efficient overall, yielding about 300 Bits per hour.

It was still a significant improvement. With continued simulations, Link hoped to assemble all eight chosen children and maximize his Bit-earning potential.

Just as he prepared for another simulation to hit 1,000 Bits and further boost his intelligence, Nurse Joy's voice interrupted him.

"Trainer Link, your Fennekin's physical exam is complete."

Link?

It took Link half a minute to realize she was calling him.

Setting aside his book, he hurried to the front desk, where Fennekin sat, looking both bored and drowsy.

"Congratulations," Nurse Joy said with a warm smile. "Your Fennekin is exceptionally healthy and energetic."

She added, "Although we don't have baseline data for Fennekin at birth, its overall stats are comparable to the most talented Torchic we've seen. Its intelligence and reaction speed, in particular, are far beyond what's typical for a newly hatched Pokémon."

Except for stamina, perhaps.

With such outstanding potential, Fennekin could excel in both battle and coordination.

"Well, I'm just glad it's healthy," Link replied.

Taking the sleepy Pokémon into his arms, Link gently tapped its shiny black nose. "No more napping—you need to eat first."

"Fu!"

At the mention of food, Fennekin's energy instantly returned, as if it had just devoured a twig.
