Chapter 380: I doubt if she is safe there
"You go with the doctor. I'll ask Leon to look for the woman's family," Gabriel suggested.
Eveline quickly ran after the doctor and nurse, but as she reached the door, the nurse stopped her.
"Miss, you can't come inside," she said firmly.
Despite her eagerness, Eveline reluctantly obeyed and remained outside, waiting anxiously for any news.
Suddenly, the sharp sound of something breaking inside startled her. She instinctively took a step forward but hesitated.
"Let me go! Who are you?" The woman's panicked screams echoed from the room.
Eveline's restlessness grew as the agonized voice sent shivers down her spine. Then, after a few tense moments, silence fell.
The door finally opened, and the doctor stepped out, his expression weary.
"She doesn't seem to be in the right state of mind," he said with a sigh.
Eveline frowned. She had suspected as much from the woman's erratic behavior, throwing things, yelling, and resisting help.
"I need to move her to a rehab facility," the doctor continued. "That's the only place where she can receive proper treatment."
A pang of despair hit Eveline, but she knew he was right.
Just as she was about to respond, a voice interrupted.
"Are you the person who brought Madame here?"
Eveline turned to see a man in his forties approaching. His sharp, observant eyes held a question of their own.
"Who are you?" she asked, her brows knitting in curiosity.
"I'm Ben," he introduced himself. "I'm her caretaker."
Eveline scrutinized him closely. The way he respectfully referred to the old woman as Madame made her realize that the woman was no ordinary person.
"How do I know you're telling the truth?" she asked, instinctively raising her guard.
Before handing over responsibility, she needed to be certain of his identity.
Ben nodded understandingly and reached into his pocket, pulling out his ID and a photograph.
"I was assigned to look after her," he explained. "She wandered off, and we've been searching for her for hours. We even involved the police."
As if on cue, an officer approached from behind him.
"Hello," the officer greeted, pulling out a printed photo. "We've been searching for a missing elderly woman. According to our investigation, she was brought here to the hospital."
"Beatrix Mathew," Eveline read aloud, scanning the details presented by the officer.
With the official confirmation, she let her guard down.
"She's inside," she told them. "But before you see her, the doctor needs to discuss her condition."
The doctor nodded in agreement, and without hesitation, Ben and the officer followed him down the hall.
Eveline remained standing there, watching them disappear around the corner.
Now that Beatrix was in safe hands, she no longer felt the need to stay. However, for her own peace of mind, she decided to check on the woman one last time before leaving.
Eveline gripped the door handle and pushed it open, stepping inside quietly. Her gaze softened as she approached the frail woman lying on the bed. The lines of old age etched across her face made her look even more vulnerable, as if the weight of the world had worn her down.
She still had no idea who this woman was, but a sense of relief washed over her, knowing she was now back with her family. After watching her for a final moment, Eveline turned to leave.
Once outside, she pulled out her phone and dialed Gabriel.
"They found her," she informed him. "Her caretaker and the police confirmed her identity."
After answering a few of Gabriel's questions, she made her way to the hospital lobby, where she found him waiting. Without another word, they left together.
Inside the doctor's office, the physician frowned as he listened to the man named Ben, the supposed caretaker who insisted on taking the patient home.
"She doesn't do well with hospitals," Ben reasoned. "The medical environment triggers her. Home is the only place where she feels safe."
It was a difficult decision, but ultimately, the doctor couldn't object. The man had provided valid identification, and the authorities had confirmed her missing person status.
With a reluctant sigh, the doctor signed the discharge papers, permitting Ben to take the patient.
Ben stepped out of the office and immediately pulled out his phone. The call connected within seconds.
"We found her, boss," he reported.
Silence lingered for a beat before a cold, menacing voice sliced through the receiver.
"Now bring her fucking back to the house. And make sure she doesn't lose her way again, because if she does, I'll make sure you disappear instead."
A chill ran down Ben's spine.
"Understood," he said quickly before ending the call.
His hands trembled slightly as he slipped the phone back into his pocket. He had been walking on thin ice ever since losing the woman, but now that they had found her without exposing her full identity, he allowed himself a quiet breath of relief.
For now, the crisis had been averted. But the real trouble was just beginning.

After wrapping up the long-delayed meeting, Eveline and Gabriel returned to the office. However much time had passed, Eveline's mind kept drifting back to the old woman they had found on the road.
Unable to shake the lingering thoughts, she finally spoke up.
"You think the old lady is okay now that she's back home?" She asked, her voice laced with uncertainty.
Gabriel glanced at her, immediately recognizing the way she chewed on her bottom lip, her telltale sign of overthinking. The encounter had clearly left an impression on her, and knowing how sensitive she was, he wasn't surprised she was still dwelling on it.
"You told me her family found her," he reminded her, joining her on the couch. Gently, he reached out and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "She's in safe hands now, right?"
Eveline hesitated, her brows knitting together. "I did say that, but…" She let out a quiet sigh, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her blouse. "I never got to talk to her. She didn't even wake up while I was there. What if she was still having panic attacks? Maybe we should have stayed a little longer just to be sure she was really okay."
Her concern was evident in her tone, and Gabriel could see the worry etched in her features.
He sighed, knowing there was no easy way to ease her mind when she had already convinced herself there was more to the situation than what met the eye.
'I doubt if she is safe there.'
