Somewhere in an unknown location, in a high-rise building, in the middle of a hot day, there was a rather interesting conversation going on. A rather beautiful middle-aged woman was chatting with a robotic soldier sitting not far from her.
- Miss Kane, we were able to find the one who interfered with us, but now it's quite difficult to deal with him," the robotic soldier said in a robotic voice, taking his eyes off his companion.
- And what exactly could have prevented us? Is it so difficult to eliminate an ordinary, albeit extremely lucky, US soldier? - The woman turned to the soldier in an irritated tone.
- That's the thing, this soldier is no ordinary soldier now. First he was rewarded by the highest ranks of the American government, attracting the eyes of the crowd, and then he was appointed the leader of a dangerous squad, - answered the cyborg, moving his robotic arm a little nervously.
- A dangerous squad? How dangerous is it exactly, and is it dangerous to us at all? - The woman asked thoughtfully.
- The U.S. has revived the Argent Squad, and so far it has only two members, but they are already dangerous. Our target and its leader are particularly dangerous, and now we won't be able to deal with him so easily," the soldier said.
- Argent Squad... Interesting move from Gilbert, but how good is this lucky boy that he was appointed head at all? - said Adeline Kane, looking at her subordinate, waiting for answers.
The cyborg himself responded by activating some hidden mechanism in his hand and pulled out a flash drive, which he immediately gave to the woman. She quickly took it and inserted it into a simple-looking laptop, but the hologram that appeared above it immediately proved that it was clearly not ordinary equipment.
An interesting event unfolded before the eyes of two not-so-ordinary individuals. First there was a fragment of a young guy, as if rushing on the waves of air stopping ordinary bandits, calmly dodging bullets, and then on the tape there was a fight of the same guy against Bane, one of the famous villains from Gotham. Though it's hard to call it a fight, because it was more like a usual cold-blooded murder. After that, there were shots of Killer Croc being killed, and it all ended with shots of the flight, and the explosion of the bombs, into which the fireball crashed.- Incredible speed, superior fighting skills, superhuman strength, aerokinesis, pyrokinesis and terrakinesis... A very interesting guy, and we clearly underestimated him. Now avenging one of our mercenaries doesn't make sense. It's not worth it... - Adelina said, thoughtfully reviewing the video.
- However, he will be in our way, so he will still need to be killed. But we don't have any available people of that strength, so we'll have to wait for a convenient chance. Raise his danger level to maximum," the woman began to speak thoughtfully, looking at the ceiling, but finally turned to her subordinate and gave him an order.
He quickly jumped up from his seat and hurried out of the office, leaving Adelina to herself. She watched the tape a few more times and then looked thoughtfully out the window of her office.
- I have to tell the Queen," she said suddenly, leaving the office as quickly as she could and going to a place she only knew....
***************************
A large office with a long desk in the middle of it. The high-class furniture and perfect cleanliness, as well as the U.S. flag all over the wall made it clear that this office belonged to a high-ranking official of the United States.
The office was empty and perfectly silent until the door opened and two people walked in. A smiling, good-looking man with a confidence-inspiring smile and a scowling old man in a black suit. They chatted cordially enough until they sat down at the table. Then the man pressed some button under the table and the sounds of locks closing resounded throughout the room, and the windows rippled for a second, clearly indicating that the windows themselves were quite technologically advanced.
- Oh, I'm so tired of keeping that perpetual smile on my face," the man said, relaxing and taking a cigar from under the table. Now his face looked rather indifferent and even the aura around him seemed to have changed.
- You chose to build a reputation like that for yourself, Gilbert. Now keep it up," the old man said with a small chuckle, taking out a small flask and drinking something obviously alcoholic.
- I understand, but it's still too painful. Well, what's the news? - Gilbert asked, continuing to smoke.
- I have some news, two bad, one neutral and one good. Which one should I start with? - said the old man, looking at his boss.
- As usual, the bad ones first. In our profession they are most important,' the man answered him.
- Well, our provocation in Iran failed and the Chinese did not react in any way to the captured prisoner, and he himself knows little and is obviously not mentally healthy, - said the old man, who had worked for the U.S. government for a long time and was the head of the most effective intelligence unit.
- Expected, but still worth a try. And that base had to be hit somehow anyway. Even though they didn't make chemical weapons there, as we originally thought, the games with cybernetisation and Hive are even more dangerous," Gilbert said.
- But the second news has to do with the Hive. Recently we've noticed some very suspicious activity in Metropolis and Washington. My guys even managed to catch one of them, but he killed himself right away," the old man said with a little irritation, taking another sip from his flask.
- That's not good. They've been trying to get a foothold in the U.S. for a long time now, and they're getting better and better at it. We need to take more serious measures. Your squad will have to try hard and find at least their temporary base, and then you can trust Waller to storm it. We can get some new ones out of jail anyway," Gilbert said, frowning slightly.
- Ohhh, I'll have to work hard again in my old age. When's my pension? - asked the old man, sighing miserably.
- Ehhh, Tony, you know that people like us don't get a pension, - Gilbert replied with a sigh.
- Okay. The next bit of news is rather expected. Argus scientists have studied Semilia Sternau's blood and can't not only copy, but even recognise her genome. They all say there's nothing unusual about it," Tony said, taking the cigar from his friend.
- Expected. We've been researching ways to prolong life since 1938 and we haven't found anything particularly effective yet. And the liquid we stole from the Lazarus Pit is running out. If we can't find new ways, we'll have to go to war with the League of Shadows," Gilbert said with a depressed look on his face.
- Well, enough of the sad stuff. Argent's squad had proved to be completely worthwhile. Kent had proved himself to be a great man, not only in fighting strength, but also in politics. Thanks to him, many people's discontent with the government's inaction on the freaks is already diminishing. Plus, he's reported that he's found some more interesting people and he's confident that he can recruit them," Tony said with a small smile.
- Yeah, I liked that guy from the first time we met. His words at the award ceremony, his eyes burning with fire and his confidence remind me of when I was young. I was like that once too, I wanted to rid the world of crime and thought it would be perfect," Gilbert said nostalgically, closing his eyes for a second.
- But he's different in some ways. Determination and the necessary ferocity, as well as ability. Perhaps he will be the one who can make our dreams come true. Or at least a worthy successor to you," Tony answered him, smiling.
- Yes, you are right, old friend. But, unfortunately, we've had enough rest. It's time to get back to business, and I have a meeting with the president in three hours, so I need to get ready," Gilbert said, pulling a smile back on his face.
Tony only sighed heavily and left the office, the defences having been switched off again. A perfectly normal day continued...
******************
A perfectly ordinary kitchen of any average person, except that the people who sat there were far from the word ordinary. A frowning black-haired man was looking at two blondes who looked almost identical. They differed only in their hairstyles, clothes, and facial expressions. One was sad, but the other was a little perplexed.
- I realised who Edmont was, but why did you bring him up now? - Karen, also known as Powergirl, asked with a still puzzled expression on her face.
- 'He came back to America, and immediately made a mess of things,' said Clark Kent, brother of the person in question and superhero, with a sigh.
- What? He came back? But why didn't you tell me? - Kara, who had been sitting sadly by her side the whole time, shouted, eyes wide open.
- You should watch the news more often," her brother said, turning on the TV. There was a news report about a new government squad and its mission in Gotham, during which several notorious villains had been eliminated and captured. It also showed the head of the squad, Edmund Kent, and told her a little about him.
- The Argent Squad. You've already seen Ed, haven't you? - Kara asked, looking sadly at Clark.
- Yes, the very day he flew in. And he's clearly handling your breakup better than you are," the guy answered her, sighing.
- Good for him. He was able to get over it after all," Kara replied with a small smile.
- And you should be able to get out of your depression as well. And I even know what would help you," Clark answered her, smiling a little enigmatically.
- And what would that be? - Kara asked boredly.
- Ed called me to a housewarming party and you two are coming with me," Clark said with a sly smile.
- What?" Kara shouted.
- Why would I want to go? - Karen asked.
- 'If you won't go on your own, I'll make you go, Kara. And you Karen should meet my brother, he's a nice bloke and you'll obviously become friends. You were just saying that you don't have enough friends in our reality," the guy said, standing up from the table.
- And that's out of the question! - Clark said in a slightly elevated tone when he saw Kara trying to tell him something and left the room.
The only people left sitting in the room were the two brooding girls, worrying each about their own things. And somewhere else, a grey-haired guy sneezed a couple of times, wondering who was remembering him...
