Chapter 13: Holy Church of Light
[Third-person perspective]
In a stone-paved road, a stream of carriages loaded with goods and people alike flowed. Some were self-propelled, while others were pulled by magical beasts such as lizards, giant birds, and even more bizarre creatures.
Guards stopped the carriages one by one before they passed through the towering walls of their kingdom to check their permits.
Among these carriages, a modern-style carriage, resembling a small train with its shape of two connected carriages like trailers, attracted attention. A bit of dried blood could be seen on it, but what stood out most was the emblem hanging on it.
When it was its turn to be checked, the guards let it pass without even taking another look at it.
"This place is still as noisy and lively as ever."
Selas spoke as he looked out the window.
"It feels nostalgic…" Solon added with a sad smile.
When they were young, their parents used to take them to the city with them on their trading trips, so these scenes were not strange to them. On the contrary, they felt as if they were living moments from the beautiful past.
Stalls lined up everywhere, carrying all kinds of food and equipment that citizens and travelers might need. Steam and smoke flowed from the factories behind them, and the shouts of workers echoed throughout.
It might not seem like it, but this world, which seemed to be in the Victorian era, was somewhat advanced in technology. For example, there were guns and more advanced tools like phones, but of course, they weren't made in the same way they were on Earth. Here, mana played a role in almost everything.
Transportation was also beginning to see a remarkable and sophisticated development that didn't rely on physical strength but on mana.
This was Utopia City, the capital of the Kingdom of Valheim.
Although the elven population was very small compared to humans, their deep knowledge of magic and their affinity with mana contributed greatly to the development of all these industries to what they are now.
The carriage bearing the emblem of the Holy Church of Light moved between the roads and crossed many streets until the surrounding areas began to change and become more affluent and quieter.
The towering building of Valheim's Magic Academy could be seen from here, given its proximity to the church. Its towers stood proudly, bearing the flag of the Kingdom of Valheim high.
After a period of wandering in a neighborhood that screamed of wealth, the carriage stopped in front of an open square that was strangely quiet despite the presence of many people in it.
Selas, Solon, and Julius exited the carriage and looked at the stunning view before them in awe.
The Holy Church of Light stood with a sacred grandeur that urged people to pray inside its pure white walls. Small, sharp towers rose at its edges, and its walls were adorned with beautiful stained-glass windows that gently reflected the sunlight.
"Follow me."
Julius moved towards the front gate, passing by devout humans and elves alike.
Selas and Solon followed him after passing through the front gate, and they were greeted by murals that depicted the names of the saints and their achievements, along with the history of the church itself.
The twins were virtually speechless in front of this magnificent scene. Even Selas' sarcasm, which had persisted throughout the short journey, had disappeared without a trace, which made Julius let out a faint "hmph."
Previously, when he met the hero, he thought that his twin, his blood, would carry a part of the chosen hero's traits, but who would have thought that the child wouldn't even have an ounce of respect for their church?!
Therefore, yes. Julius was secretly happy with the arrogant boy's reaction.
"So… Where is your holy voice?"
Selas' voice cut through the aura of holiness surrounding the place, threatening to burst a vein on Julius' head.
It was a natural question, but for some reason, Julius felt sarcasm in it.
And in contrast to him, Solon, the chosen hero, was more innocent and curious as he asked, "Why is the Saintess called the holy voice?"
Although his question was stupid and a child could answer it, Julius responded to him, ignoring Selas' question.
"That's because the Saintess is the one who conveys to us the words of our Goddess. She is like the mediator between the Goddess and her followers, and her voice carries the Goddess' teachings and will."
Solon nodded his head in understanding while Selas opened his eyes wide in fear, surprised by his twin's stupidity.
He knew that he possessed most of the typical hero traits, including stupidity and density, but this was too much!
'Let me guess, when it's time to fight, he'll turn into a smart genius capable of picking up the smallest hints and loopholes… So original,' he thought.
They continued walking, and Julius led them to the second floor, where the Saintess was supposed to reside. All along the way, people wearing long white robes followed them until they reached the Saintess' room.
One of the people knocked on the Saintess' door, waiting for Solon to enter before him. Selas assumed they were bishops.
"We will not go inside."
Julius said, pulling Selas back with him, which provoked an immediate reaction from Selas. He looked coldly at the Holy Knight and spoke coldly, "Move."
Julius refused to listen to him. "What will be discussed there is very important. The bishop might be the lowest rank to participate in that event."
Selas knew what was going on inside, of course. He was sure that after Solon was definitively verified by the Saintess, a certain ritual would be performed to obtain the Goddess' blessing, most likely.
After that, they would tell Solon that he would be sent to the Valheim Magic Academy, and with their authority, they would make the director himself take care of Solon there, and this would close off most of the usual protagonist's powers.
"You love forcing others, huh."
Selas' sarcasm caused Julius' face to frown. When he saw that the boy in front of him still didn't trust them, he got tired and spoke.
"I really don't know what your problem is, boy, but the things that are happening now are all in your favor. Why do you think the church sent me with that spacious carriage? It was to take all the people associated with the hero and provide them with the utmost care and luxury. Your attitude is denying the grace and generosity of our church."
Selas stared into his eyes as if gauging the extent of his sincerity. In the end, he shrugged and spoke, "Okay, how long will it take in total?"
Selas intended to meet the Saintess to gain a greater understanding of what was happening inside his body and whether she could expel the evil entity inside him.
"I'm just a Holy Knight, so I don't know…"
Unfortunately, what Julius said here was true. Despite being a Holy Knight, and a special military force, the Holy Knights were still in the lower class once they were classified according to the church's hierarchy.
The highest, of course, was the Saintess. With her being specifically chosen by their Goddess and being the person who carries her will, it was natural for that to happen.
Directly below her, and perhaps even close to her, was the High Pontiff, the supreme leader of the church and the person who organizes sacred decrees and religious policies. This man was very busy all the time, moving between churches.
After these come the cardinals, then the bishops, and then the Holy Knights.
Below the Holy Knights are the high priests, priests, monks, and nuns, but by their nature, these are no different from the believing followers except that they spend more time in worship and doing things that make you doubt the validity of their brains.
Anyway, these classes were based on different criteria other than strength, and despite their low class, the Holy Knights are considered the second strongest class among these classes. The Holy Knights consist of people who are considered magical knights with the blessing of light, even if it was a simple blessing.
Selas looked at the Saintess' room silently before he shrugged and retreated back towards one of the seats near the stained glass, waiting patiently, apparently.
