Reincarnated as a Doomed Extra

Chapter 16: Purity

Almost an hour had passed since Solon had entered, and my patience was already reaching its limits.

I let out a sigh as I looked at Julius, who was still guarding the door vigilantly.

Seriously... how can he do this all the time?

And then I realized, Julius was a holy knight, not your average security guard. Perhaps he had to do it now because of the seriousness of what was happening inside at this moment.

"Hmm."

I swung my feet on the chair and looked at the beautiful floating screen, specifically at the proficiency displayed on it.

[Darkness]

• Proficiency: 21%

[Frost]

• Proficiency: 55%

[Water]

• Proficiency: 55%

I smiled gently as if I were looking at my child.

"Hehehe..."

Really, there is no more beautiful sight.

After moments of contemplating the most beautiful sight in the world, I stood up from the chair and walked towards Julius, which made him even more defensive.

"Oh, come on. I won't bite." I raised my hands with a smile.

"You... you're insane... do you think I didn't see what you were doing earlier? Muttering to yourself like a madman and laughing like a dictator... I'm starting to suspect you're corrupted." He said, gripping the hilt of his sword.

"..."

"...Are you serious?" I blinked innocently while secretly intensifying my magic.

By any chance, should I kill him?

This man had discovered my corruption in a way I never imagined…

From the name itself, the term "corrupted" indicated that a person was possessed by an evil entity, weak or strong. It was also the same term they used as a pretext against those who wielded the darkness element.

He continued, "Honestly, I don't know how you can be the hero's brother..."

Does he want to provoke some kind of inferiority complex in me or what?

But it was good to know that he wasn't completely serious when he described me as corrupted.

I shrugged my shoulders and asked him with genuine curiosity in my eyes, "By the way, what's your rank?"

"...Proficient - II," he answered after a moment of hesitation.

I smiled upon hearing his response.

"Heh... Give me two months, no. Three months, and I'll kick your ass."

I don't know why, but I loved causing trouble with this man. Knowing that he was bound by the teachings of his church made things better for me to rub salt in his wounds.

Julius' face twitched, he gripped his sword and replied with a smile, "Why wait two months by the Goddess' grace? How about I kick your ass now?"

"Hahaha, you won't do that. After all, aren't you like my bodyguard?"

Julius' face was so distorted that it became unrecognizable. The sight of his face made me restrain myself for fear that he would actually kick my ass.

"Ca-calm down, man. I was just joking…"

I took two steps back just for safety.

I wasn't really scared…

Fortunately, the sound of the door opening behind us saved me from my predicament.

I turned around only to see Solon leaning his body against the door, exhausted. He looked so pale that my alarm bells went off.

"Are you okay?!"

I held his staggering body with concern. Julius also instinctively reached out his hand towards Solon.

A voice echoed from behind Solon.

"There's no need to worry. He's just adjusting."

And then she came out of the room and stood beside us.

A woman who looked only two years older than me. Her white strands of hair strangely framed her face, and her completely white clothes clung to her body, revealing its very sinful shape.

Saintess Luracilla.

A bandage was also placed to hide her eyes for a reason I knew well.

After all, the Goddess she worshiped had ravaged her eyes herself…

And although she could be heavily questioned as a person, she truly deserved her title as a saintess.

"So, who are you?" She asked me a question I didn't expect.

Didn't she already know?

I pointed to Solon and answered, "His brother."

Upon hearing my answer, she showed a strange reaction, as if she hadn't expected that answer.

"How-..." Her words caught in her throat, unable to say more.

Honestly, her not knowing me made me feel a very wrong feeling... the same feeling of wrongness that had accompanied me since the beginning of my existence here…

I shook my head, cleared my pessimistic thoughts, and focused on my goal instead. The solution was right in front of me, and I didn't want to postpone it any longer.

Although I felt as if removing the evil entity from me was a betrayal after it helped me awaken, this idea dissipated when I asked myself just one question.

Didn't it do that only for its own benefit?

Naturally, no entity, whether good or evil, would benefit from an ordinary human body.

Basically, there was no point in possessing such a body.

So without any hesitation, I asked.

"Um, Saintess. If you don't mind, I want to ask you a favor..."

The saintess was surprised by my sudden and off-topic request, and I could see Julius' surprised face from the corner of my eye. He certainly didn't expect that to come out of my mouth after all the mockery I threw about his church.

"Of course, anything for the hero's family. How can I help you?" She asked with genuine curiosity in her tone.

I looked around hesitantly. I didn't want to reveal my situation in front of a group of fanatics who might misunderstand what I might say.

When the saintess noticed my hesitation, she gestured to the inside of the room, "Would you like to come in for more privacy?"

Immediately, I nodded my head and gave Solon to Julius to take care of. Julius gently took him and led him to one of the seats to rest.

After that, I nodded to the saintess again and entered the room after her.

After making sure the place was private, I started talking.

"So, it's about my body..."

After that, I began to tell her a lot about me. How my body had been weak since my birth and how my parents had tried hard to cure me in many ways.

I told her about the ineffectiveness of all the methods my parents had tried hard to cure me with in general, and the more I spoke, the more the frown on her face intensified.

She placed her hand on her chin, lost in her thoughts. The absence of her eyes to read was particularly disturbing.

Come on…

'I know you can help in some way...' I silently begged in my head, tapping my foot on the ground nervously.

The reason for my nervousness was that I didn't directly disclose my possession by an evil entity. I only gave her more than enough reasons to examine my body.

After a period of thinking, she removed her hand from her chin and spoke, "This illness that you claim you have... did it prevent you in any way from seeing and touching mana? What I'm saying may sound strange, but you need to answer this question first."

"Indeed. I've spent my whole life unable to..." My voice trailed off at the end of my speech.

Only then did I realize that I had missed something very important.

'Damn it...'

What would my answer be when she asked me how I awakened?

Wouldn't she be suspicious of that?

The saintess might not be a fanatic when it came to the darkness element, but I highly doubted she wouldn't be when it came to an evil entity.

"Hmm..."

Luckily, she didn't seem to notice the loophole in my alternate narrative…

...or did she just not care?

I didn't know.

After nodding her head in understanding, she said something that left me guarding my body with all my being.

"Then take off your clothes."

The tone in which she said that, as if she wouldn't accept any argument, was very frightening.

"Wh-Why?"

I backed away and hugged my body, fearing that it would be violated and desecrated.

I knew my charm was dangerous to society…

...but to the point of affecting a blind woman?

I didn't expect that.

However, the saintess seemed to be serious about it when she stared at me with that motionless face for a while. I hesitated for a moment before lowering the top of my clothes down.

The saintess approached me and her hand began to touch my cold skin with curiosity.

"It's as I expected."

"What is it?"

She pressed her hand on certain points on my body, "You're suffering from mana poisoning...or you used to be at least. Not seeing and feeling mana are side effects of most of the dormant pores being blocked due to excess mana in the body, but..."

'Mana poisoning?!'

My eyes widened in realization. The people most susceptible to this disease were those who lived in a natural environment filled with abundant mana.

By no means was my village like that at all. So how did I get this?

I calmed my racing heart, "But?"

One question was solved, and another appeared just as quickly.

Knowing the reason for my body's weakness all this time was truly wonderful despite the strangeness of it. And the saint not saying anything even after knowing that she had taken a close look at my body was also a cause for relief.

That meant I was pure…

Somehow, it seemed that thing hadn't possessed me…

I let out a sigh of relief.

I had one less mystery to deal with now.

The saintess shook her head in disbelief, "Excuse me for saying this, but you were supposed to die. No being unable to contain mana can survive all this time with this amount stored inside...and yet, you did."

And she continued with a terrifying enthusiasm in her voice, "Is such a thing even possible? Your body. It seems that your body has mutated and adapted to all that excess mana over the years, to the point where even I am unable to recognize anything like this..."

"Is that a good thing?..." I felt confused by what she was saying. How could my body mutate because of mana?

Maybe what she meant was related to my physique.

She showed a wide smile as she stepped back a little, "Do you want to test it?"

I nodded my head, "Sure."

At my answer, she took out a sharp sword from her spatial ring. She took my hand and spread it out before scratching the palm of my hand. The whole time, I tried to pull my hand away, but she held it so tightly that I gave up.

I felt the burning sensation that the small wound on the palm of my hand caused as I shook my head.

Who knows how long this small wound will take to heal?

'My body still hasn't returned to its peak yet...'

"Do you see this?!"

The saintess' sudden shout brought me out of my thoughts.

I looked at the palm of my hand and noticed small spots of blood. After the saintess removed them with her hand, the palm of my hand appeared smooth without any visible sign of the previous wound.
