Reincarnated as a Mushroom?

Chapter 19: Chapter 18: The Storm Hawks Wrath 2

Chapter 18: The Storm Hawks Wrath 2

The Storm Hawk's beak snapped shut just as he activated a teleportation spell.

WHOOSH!

The mage vanished in a flash of light, reappearing several meters away. He gasped for breath, his heart pounding violently against his ribs. He had barely escaped, but he wasn't safe yet.

The Storm Hawk shrieked in frustration, its piercing eyes locking onto him once more. The beast prepared to attack again.

Think, damn it! The mage forced his panic down. He needed a plan, something to stall the creature, something it wouldn't ignore.

His gaze flickered to his satchel. A devious idea surfaced in his mind. His lips curled into a smirk.

If this bird was as intelligent as he suspected… then it would care about this.

Without hesitation, he reached into his bag and pulled out an object wrapped in thick cloth. Carefully, he unraveled it, revealing a large, gleaming egg.

A Storm Hawk's egg.

The moment the egg was exposed to the open air, the Storm Hawk froze.

Yuno, still hidden, felt the shift in energy immediately. The bird's rage didn't disappear, but something else took priority. A parental instinct.

The bald mage let out a dry chuckle, wiping the sweat from his brow. His hands still trembled, but his confidence was returning.

He held the egg up higher, just enough for the bird to see. "Take another step, and I drop this."

The Storm Hawk's wings twitched, but it didn't move forward. It remained in place, talons digging into the dirt.

That was his answer. The egg was valuable. The bird wouldn't risk it.

The mage's smirk widened. Got you.

He rolled the egg slightly in his palm, pretending to lose grip. The Storm Hawk's entire body tensed, its feathers flaring.

Yuno, watching from his hiding place, felt his stomach churn. He didn't know much about monsters like this, but he did know one thing, pushing a high-level beast into a corner was never a good idea.

The bald mage either didn't realize it or didn't care. He was too absorbed in his own arrogance.

"You thought you could kill me?" he taunted, spitting on the ground. "I may be weaker than you, but look at you now. Just a pathetic bird, groveling at my feet."

The Storm Hawk didn't react, but its claws dug deeper into the dirt, leaving cracks in the ground. Its burning feathers flared brighter, almost white-hot.

The mage's eyes gleamed with satisfaction. He lived for moments like this, when power shifted in his favor.

"To think I was once called worthless," he muttered, placing his boot on the Storm Hawk's injured wing and pressing down. "But now, even a mighty creature like you has to kneel before me."

He laughed bitterly. He was so close to victory.

And he wanted to savor it.

He let the egg dangle between his fingers, swaying it back and forth. "I could crush this right now, you know," he said casually. "I wonder, would you scream? Would you"

The bald mage, convinced that his life was finally about to change for the better, stood victorious amidst the destruction. His hands trembled with excitement as he held the Storm Hawk's egg, the very key to his class advancement. The air was thick with the scent of burnt earth, smoke curling from the still-scorching feathers of the defeated falcon.

He had done it.

"Hahaha… finally," the bald mage whispered, his fingers tightening around the egg. "With this, I"

A sharp, sudden impact struck his neck.

His body lurched forward as pain exploded through his nerves. His vision blurred, the world spinning violently as he stumbled. The force behind the attack wasn't from the falcon no, it was something else entirely.

A tiny figure had slammed into him, a faint pulse of energy flickering in its wake.

The mushroom had attacked him.

The bald mage's grip loosened.

Before he could even process what had happened, the egg slipped from his hands.

"No…!" His eyes went wide, his breath catching as he reached for it, but it was already too late.

The egg tumbled through the air, spinning rapidly toward the hard ground below.

The falcon mother, still too weak to move, let out a heart-wrenching screech, desperately flapping its wings. But it couldn't reach its offspring in time.

The world seemed to slow.

Then, at the last possible moment

A blur of motion. A soft impact.

The mushroom caught the egg without any harm.

The battlefield fell silent.

The bald mage continued to gasp while holding his injured neck as his mind struggled to comprehend the recent events. The falcon stared at the mushroom with its intense eyes. Those eyes revealed the intelligence which comprehended the recent events.

The mushroom protected its egg from harm.

The wind howled. Flames flickered. The battlefield which had previously been a zone of destruction now appeared motionless in time.

Then, without warning

THWACK!

The mother falcon unleashed her massive wing in a destructive arc. The bald mage received no warning before the impact launched him through the air as if he were a lifeless doll. The boulder's harsh edges pierced his damaged body when he hit it after the impact. The rock became stained with blood when he released a painful breath.

His body shook violently. His bones ached. His vision blurred.

"W-What…" The bald mage struggled to breathe while coughing between breaths. His fingers moved erratically while he grabbed his robe because he desperately sought any object that could rescue him.

His fingers accidentally touched the parchment.

A teleportation scroll.

His instincts screamed at him. He had to use it now. His life would end instantly if he waited for even one second.

A threatening dark shape towered above him.

A powerful beating of his heart consumed his hearing. His breathing stopped momentarily. He knew what was coming.

The falcon mother had finished with him but not with his life. (Like it ? Add to library!
