Chapter 5: Chapter 5: The First Trial
Lin Feng's laughter echoed through the hut, wild and unrestrained. For the first time since arriving in this world, he felt truly unstoppable. The limitations imposed by his Grade 9 Martial Soul no longer seemed insurmountable. Instead, they were challenges waiting to be overcome—opportunities for him to prove just how far creativity and ingenuity could take him.
As the initial euphoria subsided, Lin Feng forced himself to focus. He knew better than to let excitement cloud his judgment. While the Spiritual Stone Martial Soul was undoubtedly powerful, it also came with risks. Overloading his body with too much spiritual energy too quickly could lead to catastrophic consequences—internal injuries, ruptured meridians, or worse.
Carefully, he adjusted the output of the Martial Soul, reducing the flow of energy to a manageable level. This allowed him to absorb the spiritual energy steadily without overwhelming his system. Even so, the effects were profound. Within minutes, he could feel his mental acuity improving, his stamina increasing, and his connection to the forces of heaven and earth growing stronger.
"This is only the beginning," Lin Feng muttered under his breath, a sly grin spreading across his face. "If I can replicate this process with multiple stones—or even combine different types of energy—I might be able to accelerate my growth exponentially."
The idea sent a thrill down his spine. What if he could import not just one Spiritual Stone, but dozens? Or hundreds? By storing and refining these resources within his panel, he could essentially create an endless reservoir of spiritual energy tailored specifically to his needs. And that was just the start. With enough experimentation, he might even find ways to enhance the quality of the energy itself, making it denser and purer than anything found in nature.
But for now, he focused on mastering the basics. He spent the next hour fine-tuning his new Martial Soul, testing its limits, and exploring its potential applications. At one point, he attempted to merge the spiritual energy with the wind vortex he had created yesterday. To his delight, the resulting combination produced a miniature tornado infused with spiritual power—a swirling mass of wind and energy that crackled ominously as it hovered above his palm.
"Not bad, it has reached grade 8," Lin Feng said, inspecting his creation with pride. "Still not strong enough to rival Li Wei's broadsword, but definitely a step in the right direction."
By the time he finished experimenting, exhaustion had settled deep into his bones. The strain of manipulating such dense spiritual energy left him physically drained, and his head throbbed with a dull ache. Still, he didn't stop; he felt that he was getting closer to reaching what they called the Qi Refining stage.
Boom!!
Like a broken barrier, a low crackling noise sounded in his body as spiritual energy flowed through his veins and into his Martial Soul, strengthening both. Suddenly, the exhaustion he had been feeling disappeared entirely. His senses sharpened, his muscles felt lighter yet more powerful, and an unfamiliar surge of vitality coursed through him.
"Haha! I'm a genius!!" Lin Feng exclaimed, unable to contain his excitement. Being the first among his peers to reach this stage filled him with immense satisfaction. In just a single day, he had made significant strides—not only in understanding his unique abilities but also in proving that his Martial Soul was far from useless.
The next strange thing he noticed was that the spiritual energy feedback he was receiving from his other Martial Soul—the Spiritual Stone Martial Soul—hadn't diminished. Logically speaking, a single Spiritual Stone should barely suffice to help someone enter the realm of cultivation, after which it would vanish. For subsequent stages, cultivators required additional stones. However, for Lin Feng, things worked differently. As a Martial Soul user whose soul was essentially a darling of heavens and earth and a tool of boundless potential, the Spiritual Stone Martial Soul wouldn't disappear. It remained intact, continuously providing spiritual energy.
However, Lin Feng realized that while the stone wouldn't vanish, its current grade limited its effectiveness. To increase its potency, he needed either more Spiritual Stones or higher-grade ones. Importing additional stones into his panel seemed like the most efficient solution.
While lost in thought, Lin Feng suddenly heard faint footsteps approaching his hut. Despite being a novice cultivator, his heightened senses allowed him to detect subtle sounds. More than one person was outside, creeping closer to his hut.
"Who could it be this late at night?" Lin Feng wondered silently. Standing up quietly, he sneaked toward the window and peered out cautiously.
He spotted three familiar faces—youths who had trained alongside him earlier that day. Their names came to mind instantly: Zhang Hu, a lanky boy with a brutish demeanor and a Grade 8 Axe Martial Soul; Liu Gang, a wiry youth known for his cunning nature and a Grade 8 Dagger Martial Soul; and Wang Lei, the apparent leader of the trio, whose fiery temper matched his Grade 7 Flame Fist Martial Soul.
From their movements, Lin Feng deduced their intentions immediately. They were here for his Spiritual Stone.
"Damn!" Lin Feng cursed under his breath, though a smirk tugged at the corners of his lips. These fools were gravely mistaken if they thought they could overpower him. If this had happened yesterday, before his breakthrough, he might have handed over the stone without resistance. But now? He was in an entirely different league.
As the trio drew closer, their whispered conversation drifted through the air.
"Bro, are we doing the right thing?" Zhang Hu asked nervously, glancing around as if expecting someone to catch them.
"What if the village chief finds out?" Liu Gang added, his voice trembling slightly.
"He was given the stone directly by the chief," Wang Lei snapped, rolling his eyes. "Shut up! Who cares? He's just an orphan with no background and a trash Martial Soul. Nobody cares about him."
"Let's snatch the stone and leave right away!" Zhang Hu urged, regaining some confidence.
"Yeah! Let's jump in through the window! That old thing looks like it'll fall apart with a single push!" Wang Lei declared, gesturing toward the fragile wooden frame.
With synchronized nods, the three moved forward, ready to invade Lin Feng's hut.
Before they could act, Lin Feng preemptively stepped back from the window, positioning himself strategically near the door. When the trio burst in through the window, shouting arrogantly, they froze upon seeing Lin Feng standing calmly in the center of the room, arms crossed.
"Well, well, look who decided to pay me a visit," Lin Feng said mockingly, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "What brings you gentlemen here at such a late hour?"
Caught off guard, Wang Lei quickly recovered and barked, "Hand over the Spiritual Stone, you pathetic excuse for a cultivator! You don't deserve something so valuable!"
"Oh really?" Lin Feng replied, feigning surprise. "And what makes you think you do?"
Without waiting for a response, Zhang Hu and Liu Gang lunged at him simultaneously, their fists raised. Zhang Hu swung wildly with brute force, while Liu Gang aimed for a sneakier strike from behind.
To their shock, Lin Feng dodged both attacks effortlessly. His movements were fluid and precise, leaving the attackers flailing at empty air. Before they could recover, Lin Feng struck back, delivering swift punches to their stomachs. Both youths doubled over in pain, gasping for breath as they collapsed to their knees.
"You bastards…" Wang Lei growled, summoning his Flame Fist Martial Soul. A flickering aura of orange flames enveloped his right hand, radiating heat. "I'll teach you respect!"
Lin Feng merely chuckled. Activating his own Martial Soul—the windy orb of concentrated spiritual energy—he released a pulse of energy that suppressed Wang Lei's flames instantly. The fiery aura flickered and died, leaving the enraged youth stunned. He couldn't believe how his superior martial soul was suppressed.
Seizing the opportunity, Lin Feng closed the distance between them in an instant. With a sharp kick to the chest, he sent Wang Lei sprawling backward. The impact knocked the wind out of him, and he lay sprawled on the ground, groaning in pain.
Lin Feng crouched beside the defeated trio, his expression cold and calculating. "Listen carefully," he said, his voice low and menacing. "If any of you ever try something like this again, I won't hesitate to make sure you regret it. Understand?"
All three nodded frantically, too terrified to speak. Satisfied, Lin Feng rummaged through their belongings and confiscated their piggy banks, which contained a handful of copper coins each. Turning to Wang Lei, he added, "Take your friends and get out of my sight."
Trembling, Wang Lei scrambled to his feet and dragged his unconscious companions away, leaving Lin Feng alone once more.
Once the intruders were gone, Lin Feng locked the door securely and returned to his experiments. Though the encounter had been brief, it reinforced one crucial fact: he was no longer the weak, helpless boy he once was. With his unique Martial Soul and relentless determination, he was destined for greatness.
And this was only the beginning.
