Chapter 9: Chapter : 9 : The Twins!
Our eyes met, and I froze. That same spark—the unmistakable, electrifying jolt I had felt with Aisha—coursed through my body like a lightning strike.
Is this happening again? I thought, my heart pounding. Two at once? Are these two my soulmates too?
The one with the glasses, had an aura of softness that drew you in without effort. Her round glasses perched delicately on her nose, framing her wide, innocent purple eyes that seemed to sparkle with quiet curiosity. Her face was heart-shaped, with a gentle blush dusting her cheeks, giving her a perpetual air of shyness. Her lips were small and pink, pressed together nervously as if she were constantly battling the urge to speak but holding back.
She wore the school uniform—a neatly ironed white shirt. The ribbon at her collar was perfectly tied, its soft pink hue complementing her gentle demeanor. Her pleated skirt fell just above her knees, revealing shapely legs clad in black thigh-high stockings. The fabric of her shirt strained slightly at her chest, drawing attention to her fuller figure—her ample curves were unmistakable, likely an F-cup, but she carried herself with such modesty that it added to her charm rather than being overt. She wore simple accessories: a tiny star-shaped hairpin tucked into her sleek, shoulder-length blue hair, adding a touch of whimsy to her appearance.
In contrast, the one with the headphones, exuded confidence and energy. Her sharp features gave her an edgy, rebellious vibe—her almond-shaped eyes gleamed with determination, and her lips often curled into a mischievous smirk. Her eyes a striking purple. She wore the same school uniform, but with subtle differences that spoke volumes about her personality.
Her skirt was slightly shorter than her sister's, revealing toned legs that were left bare, in contrast to Hana's stockings. Her figure was lean and athletic, with a smaller chest, likely a B-cup, but her posture and the way she carried herself made her presence just as commanding. A pair of sleek black headphones rested around her neck, the brand logo barely visible but clearly expensive. Her jet-blue hair was cut into a chin-length bob, its slightly tousled style giving her a carefree appearance. She wore a single silver stud in her left ear, adding a touch of modernity to her schoolgirl look.
The girl with headphones stared at me with sharp, narrowed eyes. Her expression was cool, almost aloof, but her flushed cheeks betrayed her. Meanwhile, the girl with glasses seemed to retreat further behind her sister, clutching at her shoulder and peeking out like a timid kitten.
"What kind of RPG boss fight is this?" the girl with the headphones, thought as she analyzed me. Why do I feel like I just encountered a rare monster? No—he's more like a secret route love interest in a visual novel!
The girl with glasses, was in turmoil. He's… so handsome. No, no, what am I thinking? He would never notice someone like me. He probably only likes confident, beautiful girls like her…
I quickly extended my hand to them, trying to diffuse the awkward tension. "I'm sorry! Did you two hurt yourselves?" My voice trembled slightly with concern.
For a moment, they just stared at me as if I had sprouted a halo. Then, after a brief hesitation, the girl with the headphones reached out to take my left hand, while the girl with glasses timidly took my right.
As I helped them up, I couldn't ignore how warm their hands felt in mine. My heart was doing flips, and by the looks on their faces—flushed red and wide-eyed—they weren't any better off.
"Th-thank you," Hana murmured so softly that I almost missed it. She ducked her head behind her sister again, her round glasses slightly fogged up from the proximity.
Why is she hiding? Did I do something wrong? I scratched the back of my neck, feeling self-conscious.
"Mei-chan…" Hana whispered, tugging on her sister's sleeve.
"What, Onee-chan?" Mei replied, though her usually confident voice cracked. She glanced at me out of the corner of her eye, then quickly looked away. Wait, does Onee-Chan like him too? This can't be happening! We can't both…
"Hey…" I spoke up, my voice unintentionally breaking from nerves.
"Yes!" Mei's response was immediate, her voice a pitch higher than usual. Both she and Hana flinched, their faces turning even redder.
I chuckled nervously. "I'm new here. Could you help me find my class? It's 10-A. Do you know where that is?"
For a moment, the twins looked at each other in surprise, then back at me.
"We're in that class too," Hana finally managed to say, her voice soft but audible this time. She fidgeted with the hem of her sleeve, avoiding my gaze.
"We can take you there if you want," Mei added, her tone more composed, though her ears were still red.
"Really? That's great! Thank you so much," I said, offering them a grateful smile.
And that was my mistake.
To me, it was just a polite gesture, but to them, it was like I had just descended from heaven. In their eyes, I probably looked like some kind of sparkling knight surrounded by flowers and a glowing aura.
Hana clutched her chest, feeling like her heart might burst. He smiled at me… At ME! Oh no, I think I'm dying. This is too much. I can't handle it. Someone call an ambulance…
Mei, meanwhile, was doing mental gymnastics. Stop blushing, stop blushing! What's wrong with you? You're supposed to be the cool one! But… that smile…
"Umm…" Hana mumbled, barely audible again. She gripped her sister's arm for support before finally squeaking out, "M-my name is Hana. Ahane Hana. What's yours?"
I tilted my head slightly, smiling at her shyness. "Nice to meet you, Ahane-san. My name is Ito. Kage Ito."
Hearing her name roll off my tongue made Hana light up like a Christmas tree. Her lips curved into the faintest, shyest smile, and she ducked her head again, hiding behind her sister.
Mei looked at her in shock. Is she… smiling? Hana NEVER opens up to strangers like this. What's going on here?
"And you?" I turned to Mei, smiling again. "May I know your name too?"
"Yes!" she blurted out, louder than intended. Realizing how eager she sounded, she quickly cleared her throat and added, "I'm Mei. Ahane Mei."
"Ah, so you're sisters?" I asked, intrigued.
"Yes," Mei replied. "Actually, we're twins. I'm the younger one."
"Twins?" I repeated, leaning in slightly as if to examine them more closely. I rested my chin on my hand, pretending to ponder something. "Now that I look carefully, you two do look similar… but…"
Mei froze, her cheeks flushing crimson. She crossed her arms over her chest as if to shield herself. "W-what are you comparing us with?!" she cried.
"No, no, it's not like that!" I stammered, waving my hands frantically. "I just meant your accessories!"
Hana peeked out from behind her sister, her glasses slightly askew. "A-accessories?"
"Well," I said thoughtfully, "you wear headphones, which give you this confident and cool vibe—really strong and cute. And your sister, with her glasses, looks incredibly kind and adorable."
It wasn't a lie. That was genuinely how I saw them. But I probably should have chosen my words more carefully.
Both of them stood there in stunned silence for a moment before their noses started bleeding simultaneously.
"W-what's wrong?!" I panicked, stepping closer. "Do you need to go to the nurse's office?"
"N-no!" they said in unison, hastily covering their noses. "It's nothing!"
The twins exchanged horrified looks, both of them realizing the same thing:
She likes him too…
She likes him too…
Mei clenched her fists tightly, her nails pressing into her palms as a storm of emotions swirled within her. Look at how he made her smile. She never smiles like that. I should step back. I'll support her like I always do. Yeah… that's the right thing to do. If she's happy, then I'll be happy too. That's what matters, right? Yet, as the thought solidified in her mind, her chest ached, a heavy, painful weight settling in her heart.
Hana bit her lip, her fingers nervously gripping the edge of her skirt as her mind raced. Mei-chan… She's always been there for me, always protecting me, always putting my happiness first. Someone as kind, as gentle, and as beautiful as her deserves someone as amazing as him. Someone like him would definitely prefer someone as confident and radiant as her. Someone who can stand by his side without hesitation. I mean, look at me—I can barely even speak without stuttering. Mei-chan… She's always been the brave one, the strong one. She talks to people so easily, makes friends like it's nothing, and everyone loves her. There's no way he'd choose me, not when Mei-chan is right here. I'll just step aside and cheer her on, like I always do. It's better this way. At least one of us can be happy. But as the thought took root, tears prickled at the corners of her eyes, though she fought them back. It's fine. I'll be fine. I'll make sure Mei-chan gets her chance.
And then there was me, standing there like a clueless idiot, completely unaware of the silent war raging in their hearts. Their subtle glances, the awkward hesitations, the small, nervous gestures—all of it flew right over my head. I didn't have a single clue about the turmoil I had just sparked in their lives.
But one thing was becoming increasingly clear to me as I stood between them, watching their flushed faces and shaky smiles: my life was about to get a whole lot more complicated, and I had absolutely no idea how to handle it.
