Revenge on my Mafia Lover

Chapter 5: Escape

Selena

It felt like I was trapped in that room for ages. But it was just days... or maybe weeks? I wasn't sure anymore. And honestly, I just wanted to forget everything, everything that happened after that dinner.

Every night, the man would come into the room, he would use me like I was nothing more than an object, and when he was done, he'd leave without a word or a glance at me.

Each time he walked in, the sight of him made my skin crawl, but I kept that feeling buried deep down. I had to. If I wanted to survive, I needed to keep my hatred hidden, give him the impression that he was breaking me and I was powerless.

At least he fed me. A maid came at a particular time in the mornings, afternoons and evenings, carrying a tray of food for me. I got to know that there was always someone armed standing guard outside the door.

The maid would give me the food and then wait until I'd eaten before leaving with the tray. The days kept passing in that routine while I kept plotting my escape.

One of those afternoons, while the maid wasn't paying attention, I slipped a butter knife off the tray. I quickly tucked it into my clothes with my heart ringing in my ears from adrenaline. I held on to that tiny weapon like it was my lifeline.

Later that night, when the man came to the room, I was ready for him.

He barely even looked at me as he closed the door behind him. His arrogance made me sick. I gripped the butter knife and lunged at him, aiming right for his chest.

But he was fast, too fast. He deflected my attack effortlessly, twisting my wrist until the knife dropped from my grip. I cried out in pain but that only seemed to amuse him.

"Still trying?" He taunted, his lips twitched up in a mocking smirk. "Still failing?"

"I'll kill you, bastard! I'll kill you even if it's the last thing I do. I swear!"

He chuckled, letting go of my wrist. I stepped away from him, rubbing it.

"You have so much hatred for me and you don't even know my name? I'd hate for you to die without knowing who ruined your life." He took a step towards me and I took a step back. He didn't stop approaching me until my back was flat against the wall.

"Gonzalo Cabrera." He told me. "That's the name of your captor."

He grinned, then turned around and left.

That was the last time he let me have anything that could remotely be used as a weapon. The maid also had to check to make sure everything she came in with was there before she'd leave.

Now, it's been days since that incident and the only thing I knew was his name. I couldn't escape the panic room because I had no idea what the combination for the lock was and there was always someone armed waiting out there.

I couldn't escape if I didn't know how to get to the exit, I at least needed to know how guarded the house was.

Just when I thought I'd never get a chance, an opportunity presented itself. The maid came into my room one night and instead of a tray, she was holding a garment bag.

"The boss wants you to have dinner with him tonight." She announced, laying the garment bag on the bed for me.

My heart leapt with joy. Dinner with Gonzalo? Then that meant I'd be out of this room, at least for a little while. That could be my one and only chance, so I grabbed it.

I put on the clothes and let the guard escort me upstairs, while keeping my eyes down and pretending I wasn't watching everything around me.

The stairs, the hallway, the doors.. they were all engraved in my mind. Each turn, the way back to that panic room, the front entrance… I couldn't afford to miss a single detail.

Before we got to the dining room, the front door opened and Gonzalo walked in. I caught sight of heavily armed men standing guard outside and knew that was my only obstacle if I could successfully escape the panic room first.

We got seated at the dining table and they didn't bother hiding the knives and forks from me. It was as if they were daring me to try anything.

"Enjoying your breath of fresh air?" Gonzalo asked, studying me with those piercing eyes.

I said nothing, rather I reached for my butter knife. His hand stopped me before I could even lift it and he looked irritated.

"Give it up already. I'm not in the mood tonight. I have somewhere to be right after this."

I let go of the knife, giving him a nasty look. "I'll never stop trying, Gonzalo Cabrera. You seem unaffected, but you really should be scared. Because, the second I get out of here, that's when your death by my hands becomes inevitable." I reduced my voice to a whisper. "I, Selena Brooks, I'll definitely kill you."

He glared at me, then waved the guard over. "Take her back. Since you can't appreciate my generosity, you can return to your room."

The guard led me back down to the room, shoving me inside with enough force to make me stumble. I clutched my stomach, groaning as I pretended to be in pain.

"Don't even think about it." The guard warned. "I'll shoot you before you even try pulling any tricks on me."

He stepped back and locked the door while I pounded on it.

"I'm being serious. I think something's really wrong." I kept banging, but he didn't open the door.

I gasped, putting as much desperation as I could into my voice. "I... I'm in so much pain. Please, you have to help me!"

I clutched my stomach harder, sinking to the floor as I let out a low, pathetic whimper. "Help!" I managed to whisper before letting my head fall back and my eyes slipping shut as I forced my body to go limp.

I heard him punch in the keys and knew I had him. I didn't move or even breathe until he came in, until I felt him very close to me.

Then I opened my eyes and brought my knee up between his legs. He yelped and doubled over, groaning in pain.

I didn't give him room to recover, I used all the strength I had in me to grab his head and slam it hard against the wall.

He slumped to the floor, unconscious.

My heart was pounding as I stared at his limp frame, finding it hard to believe I just took down a big man with my bare hands.

But I didn't have any time to waste. I tiptoed to the door, glancing around to make sure no one else was in sight.

Now, I run like the devil's on my tail.
