Riftborn: System Unleashed

Chapter 9: Chapter 9: The Heart of Eldarath (Part 2/2)

The chamber shook violently as the Guardian of Eldarath unleashed its ultimate ability. Stone fragments rained down from the ceiling, crashing to the ground with deafening clatters. James darted behind another pillar, his heart pounding in his chest as the heat from the flames scorched the air. Each breath felt like inhaling fire, the acrid stench of burning stone and magic searing his nostrils. His body was battered, bruised, and drained of energy. His scythe felt heavier than ever, its weight pressing down on his shoulder, reminding him of the brutal fight he had endured.

[Mana: 60/150]

Everything seemed to be against him now. His health was dangerously low, and his mana reserves were nearly depleted. The cracks in the Guardian's core were growing, its once-brilliant flames flickering out, but it was still standing. And he was running out of time. The Guardian's roar echoed across the chamber, an ominous sound that resonated deep within James's bones. The final blow was coming, and he had to act fast.

"Alright," James muttered to himself, his voice barely audible over the roaring flames. He could feel the tension in the air, the oppressive weight of the battle pressing on him. "Time to go all in."

His eyes flickered to the crackling core of the Guardian, the only weakness he had seen, and the source of its dwindling power. He could see the cracks spreading further, threatening to tear it apart. The Guardian was on the edge of collapse, but so was he. Despite the odds, despite the fear gnawing at his insides, he refused to give in. He had come too far.

He tightened his grip on the scythe, its cool surface offering a semblance of comfort amidst the chaos. The next few moments would decide everything. He couldn't afford another mistake.

"Stick to the plan," he muttered, his eyes narrowing. The [Pathfinding] skill—he'd need it now more than ever. With a deep breath, he activated it, the familiar glow of the skill settling over his vision like an ethereal map. It highlighted the clearest path through the chaos, guiding him toward the Guardian's core. Without hesitation, he darted out from behind the pillar, weaving through the flaming debris and jagged stone that fell from above like death from the heavens.

The Guardian's sapphire eyes, glowing with a fierce intensity, turned toward him. Its movements were sluggish now, its once-fluid motions hindered by the damage it had sustained. Still, it was a formidable opponent, and James knew he couldn't let his guard down.

Suddenly, the ground beneath James quaked violently. He barely had time to react before the Guardian slammed a massive fist into the floor, sending shockwaves rippling outward. The force of the blow shook the very foundation of the chamber, and the ground cracked open, fissures spreading like the claws of some monstrous creature trying to claw its way to freedom.

James jumped, his body moving on instinct as the tremor shattered the stone beneath him. His boots skidded across the slick floor, and he barely managed to keep his balance as the earth beneath him seemed to shift and buckle. Pain shot through his body with every movement—his knees aching with every step, his muscles burning with exhaustion—but he pushed through the pain. He had no other choice.

The Guardian raised one of its massive arms and clenched it into a fist, the runes inscribed on its body flaring to life. The floor beneath him began to glow with a faint, ominous light. Before he could react, jagged stone hands erupted from the ground, like claws reaching out to drag him down into the earth. James leapt backward, but one of the stone hands caught his ankle, its grip like iron as it squeezed with unrelenting force.

The pain was immediate, sharp, and overwhelming. It felt as though his leg was being crushed under the weight of a boulder. He gritted his teeth, biting back a scream as his vision blurred from agony. His scythe pulsed with dark energy, and he activated [Shadow Tentacles] without thinking. The black, writhing tendrils of shadow shot out, slamming into the stone hand with a force that shattered it into fragments. The hand crumbled into dust, and he was free—just in time to roll to the side as another wave of flames surged toward him.

The heat from the flames was unbearable, and he could feel the searing burn as they rushed past him, narrowly missing his skin. His heart thundered in his chest as he scrambled to his feet. The pain in his leg was sharp, but the fight wasn't over. He wasn't finished yet.

"You're cracking," James growled through gritted teeth, his eyes locked on the Guardian's flickering core. "Time to break you wide open."

With a determination that bordered on desperation, he resummoned his remaining strength. He called upon [Grasp of the Fallen], his necromantic skill that summoned a spectral wolf to his side. The ethereal creature materialized beside him, its translucent form glowing with an eerie light. The wolf snarled, its fur shifting like smoke as it locked its glowing eyes onto the Guardian.

The Guardian swung its massive fist at the wolf, but the wolf was turned incorporeal, its form flickering in and out of reality like a shadow. It darted aside, narrowly avoiding the blow, and lunged forward, snapping at the exposed cracks in the Guardian's chest. The wolf's teeth sank into the stone, its claws raking across the surface in an attempt to widen the fractures.

The distraction worked. The Guardian's attention shifted, its focus now on the wolf as it tried to swat the creature away. James didn't waste the opportunity. He sprinted forward, his scythe humming with necrotic energy, and activated [Death's Embrace]. The blade of his scythe connected with the cracks in the Guardian's core, the dark energy pulsing through the fractures like a virus, spreading through the stone like veins.

The Guardian let out a deafening roar as the dark energy surged into its body, the flames within it flickering violently. The air was thick with the smell of burning magic, and the chamber trembled as the force of the attack rippled through the Guardian's form.

The explosion of energy sent James flying backward, his body slamming into the cold stone floor with a sickening thud. Pain lanced through his side, and his vision swam as he struggled to sit up. His health bar flashed a warning, and the red sliver dwindled dangerously low.

[-40 HP]

[Health: 15/140]

He groaned, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he pushed himself to his hands and knees. The Guardian staggered, its movements jerky and uncoordinated. The cracks in its core had widened significantly, and its flames were barely a flicker now. It was on the verge of collapse, but so was James. He was running on empty.

The Guardian raised its arms once more, the runes on its body glowing with one final surge of energy. The air around James grew thick with dread, the temperature in the chamber plummeting as the Guardian prepared to unleash its final, devastating attack.

James's heart sank as the notification flashed before his eyes.

[Wrath of the Ancients: Final Phase Activated]

The room erupted in a blinding light, a wave of searing heat and stone that surged outward from the Guardian. The flames consumed everything in their path, and the ground beneath James cracked open as the shockwaves from the attack ripped through the air. It was a final, desperate move—a last-ditch effort to obliterate him.

James's mind raced. There was no outrunning this attack. His only option was to take a risk. A dangerous, reckless risk that could either end the fight or end him.

With no time to think, he activated [Requiem of Souls]. The haunting, ethereal melody filled the air, the spectral notes weaving through the flames, disrupting their flow. The attack faltered, the waves of fire dimming just enough for James to make his move.

His body screamed in protest as he charged forward, his scythe glowing brighter than ever before, its blade crackling with dark energy. He focused everything he had left into that one final strike—the one that would either destroy the Guardian or destroy him.

With a battle cry, he drove the scythe into the Guardian's core. The blade sank deep into the cracked stone, and dark energy exploded outward, consuming the Guardian from within.

The Guardian froze, its sapphire eyes dimming as the flames within its chest flickered out. Its massive form trembled, the runes on its body cracking and falling away like ash. The room grew eerily silent, the oppressive heat dissipating as the Guardian's body crumbled into a heap of lifeless stone.

James collapsed to his knees, his scythe clattering to the ground beside him. His body was spent, every inch of him aching with the toll the battle had taken. His chest heaved as he struggled to catch his breath, but he had done it. The Guardian was defeated. He was still standing—barely, well, not really .

The once oppressive atmosphere in the chamber began to shift. The glowing runes on the walls faded, replaced by a gentle blue light that filled the room, casting everything in a soft, almost serene glow. A pedestal rose from the center of the room, its stone surface smooth and unblemished. Atop the pedestal rested a small, intricately carved box, its design elegant and ancient. James's heart skipped a beat. What was this? Was this the prize for defeating the Guardian?

He forced himself to his feet, his legs trembling beneath him. The pedestal was still rising, its slow, deliberate movement almost hypnotic. As he drew closer, he could feel a strange energy emanating from the box, a subtle pull that seemed to beckon him. His fingers tingled in anticipation. Whatever was inside, it had to be important. He had fought too hard for this moment to be anything less than extraordinary.

With a deep breath, he reached out and opened the box.

Inside lay a small, gleaming crysta, embedded in a ring, its surface smooth and translucent, swirling with a deep, ethereal glow. It was unlike anything James had ever seen before. The moment his fingers brushed against it, a surge of power coursed through his body, filling him with warmth. It was as though the very air around him had become alive, charged with energy.

[Acquired: Heart of Eldarath]

A new notification appeared in his vision.

The warmth of the ring still pulsed through his hands, its power resonating deep within him. James couldn't help but wonder what the artifact would mean for his future. What doors could it open, and what consequences might follow? He stood there for a moment, holding the Heart of Eldarath in his hand, considering the potential of this mysterious prize.
