Rise of the Devil's Soul

Chapter 19: Old Man Fu

Fu, his weathered face illuminated by the firelight, looked at Wu Xie with a stern gaze.

His eyes, usually warm and inviting, were now as hard as the river stones. "I am incapable of helping you," he said, his voice echoing in the silence of the room.

His words, blunt and final, hung in the air like a heavy cloud, casting a shadow over Wu Xie's hopes.

Wu Xie, however, was not one to back down easily. Desperation creeping into his voice, he moved closer to Fu, his tall figure looming over the old man.

"Please, I beg you to help me," he pleaded, his voice barely more than a whisper. "I can do anything in return," he added, his words carrying the weight of his resolve.

Fu raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Anything?" he asked, his voice laced with curiosity.

"Yes, anything," Wu Xie replied, his voice firm. He paused for a moment before adding, "Except my life. I'm quite attached to it, you see."

Fu chuckled, a deep, hearty sound that filled the room. It was as if the walls themselves were laughing along with him. "I don't need your life, lad," he said, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "I've got enough on my plate without adding 'babysitting a soul from another universe' to the list."

"But," he continued, leaning back in his chair and stroking his beard thoughtfully, "there is something you could do for me."

"My wife has been captured by the Holy Empress. If you can help me bring her back, I will assist you in your journey."

Wu Xie, taken aback, nearly choked on his fish. "Why was your wife captured by the queen?" he asked, his eyes wide with surprise.

Fu let out a sigh, his gaze distant as he delved into the memories of his past. "Many years ago, I fell in love with a beautiful and spirited girl from the Beast Clan."

"Her eyes were as wild and free as the beasts she hailed from, and her laughter was as infectious as a summer breeze. We were deeply in love, two souls intertwined in a dance of passion and companionship."

"We made our home in Qintai city, a bustling metropolis filled with life and color. Our days were filled with joy and laughter, our nights with whispers of love and dreams of a future together."

"Life was perfect, a beautiful tapestry of love and duty."

"But one fateful day, something inexplicable happened. A dark force, as elusive as a shadow and as destructive as a storm, possessed my wife. She changed, her laughter replaced by screams, her loving gaze replaced by a vacant stare."

"In her madness, she committed an unthinkable act - she killed the wife of Jaw, the trusted servant of the Holy Queen."

"The repercussions were immediate and severe. They imprisoned my wife for her crime, her once vibrant spirit now confined within the cold, stone walls of a dungeon. It has been 12 years since that dreadful day, 12 years of longing and despair."

"To add to my torment, they erected a barrier around here, a wall of energy that I cannot cross. It stands as a constant reminder of my loss, a cruel testament to my helplessness."

"Even if I want to, even if I muster all my strength and courage, I cannot cross it. I am left on the other side, my heart aching with the pain of separation and the guilt of failure."

In the dimly lit kitchen, Wu Xie, moved by Fu's heart-wrenching tale of love and loss, turned to the old man.

"Don't worry, old man," he began, his voice steady and reassuring, "I will help you. Once I become powerful, I'll get your wife back. I mean, how hard can it be? I've watched enough action movies to know what to do."

He continued, his gaze never leaving Fu's, "I have gained admission to Lushan Academy, one of the most prestigious institutions in the realm."

"I am going to compete in the Imperial Examination, a test of strength and intellect that only the best can pass." His voice was filled with determination, his resolve as unyielding as a mountain.

"After that," he added, a hint of excitement creeping into his voice, "I will enter 'The Pavilion of the Celestial Echo'. It's a place of immense power and knowledge, a place where one can reach new heights of spiritual power."

Fu, taken aback by Wu Xie's declaration, let out a hearty laugh. "Aren't you way too overconfident?" he asked, his eyes twinkling with amusement.

"I like that. I was also like you once, full of dreams and ambitions. Haha, anyway, I'll help you." His words, though laced with humor, carried a promise of support and guidance.

His laughter echoed in the room, a testament to the unexpected friendship that had formed between them.

Despite their differences in age and experience, they had found common ground, a bond forged in the fires of shared goals and mutual respect.

Their conversation, filled with promises, dreams, and a good dose of humor, marked the beginning of an unlikely alliance, one that would change their lives forever.

After their heart-to-heart conversation, Wu Xie found a cozy nook in the corner of the room. It was a small space, but it was comfortable and inviting, with a soft mat and a warm blanket.

Exhausted from the day's adventures and the emotional rollercoaster he had been on, he nestled into the nook and soon drifted off to dreamland. His breaths became slow and steady, a peaceful rhythm that matched the quiet hum of the night.

Outside, the world continued its endless cycle. The moon, a constant companion in the night sky, performed its nightly dance. It moved slowly across the sky, its silver light bathing the world below in a soft, ethereal glow.

The stars twinkled in the distance, each one a story of its own. The wind whispered through the trees, carrying with it the secrets of the day.

The river flowed gently, its waters glistening under the moonlight. And all the while, Wu Xie slept, oblivious to the world around him, lost in a world of dreams where anything was possible.
