Ruler of Heat: One Man, A Thousand Thirsts

Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Trial of Loyalty [18+]

The throne room had never felt so cold.

Not even when it was made of stone and silence.

Now it echoed with uncertainty.

Rivan stood before his court—twelve women from across conquered kingdoms, all bound to him by desire, flame, and the unseen thread of the system.

But that thread trembled today.

> [System Alert: Loyalty Instability Detected — Two Sources Unconfirmed. Initiating Loyalty Audit.]

Alyxia sat to his right, her face still regal but shadowed by tension. Selix stood armed and ready.

Shadow Queen lingered near the windows, her eyes scanning the perimeter.

It wasn't war knocking. It was doubt.

And that was always louder.

Citadel Courtyard — Sunset

The circle was drawn with ash and silver. Twelve women entered, one by one, standing on marked sigils of their bonded flame.

This wasn't a punishment. This was a revelation.

Rivan stood at the center.

"I built this empire with truth and heat," he said. "But if one thread burns wrong, the whole weave fails."

He turned slowly, his voice calm.

"If you carry betrayal, fear, or hesitation in your heart—this circle will reveal it. Not to me. To yourselves."

> [Ritual Triggered: Trial of Loyalty] [Effect: All bonded threads exposed. Dishonesty manifests as visible shadow. Consequence: Flame Severance or Rebonding.]

The circle glowed.

The women closed their eyes.

Light rose from their feet—soft and gold from most.

But not from all.

A flicker of black curled under one sigil.

Two, actually.

One near the outer edge. One dangerously close to the throne.

Selix unsheathed her dagger.

Shadow Queen shifted, but Rivan raised a hand.

"No one moves. This is still trust… until it becomes treason."

Aftermath of Light

The shadows belonged to two women:

Lady Thara, a recent northern bond—quiet, distant, rarely involved.

Nalara, once a temple priestess turned courtesan.

Both stepped forward.

Thara spoke first. "I… I don't want to betray you. But I still serve old beliefs. They whisper doubt."

Nalara added, "And I… I don't know if I came to love you, or just your power."

Silence.

Rivan didn't show anger.

He showed choice.

"You'll each undergo Rebonding. No punishment. No exile. But if the ritual fails… you leave."

Both nodded.

And stepped into the flame.

> [System Sync: Initiating Rebonding] [Outcome: Thara — SUCCESS. Doubt Cleared. Role Updated: Keeper of the North Flame] [Outcome: Nalara — FAIL. Flame Severed. Emotional Thread Cut.]

Nalara dropped to her knees.

Rivan walked to her. Kneeling beside her, he said only this:

"You don't have to serve me. But you can never lie to yourself again."

She left.

No guards. No chains. Only freedom.

Later — High Tower Overlook

Alyxia joined Rivan as the sky turned orange.

"You could've punished her."

"No," Rivan said. "Punishment is for traitors. She was just lost."

"And if more shadows rise?"

He turned to her.

"Then we burn brighter."

> [System Update: Empire Loyalty Restored: 98%] [New Trait Unlocked: Heartfire — Rivan can now sense emotional fluctuations across his entire bonded network.]

But deep in the dark… someone else had watched.

And they were not content with emotional battles.

They wanted fire. Real fire.

And they were ready to strike.
