Chapter 13: Beginner
When Sam emerged from the white space, he inhaled the fresh air deeply, filling his lungs, though his spirit still clung to that void where he had spent an entire year. His eyes, though clear in vision, carried hidden shadows of an agony that words could never fully describe. This had been his first true test—a confrontation with the depths of his own mind, where he defeated the monsters lurking within.
His body moved smoothly, yet each step bore the weight of the ordeal he had endured. While time in the outside world had stood still, for him, it had been a full year of solitude and struggle, battling the creeping madness.
Sam distanced himself from the village, heading toward the dense forest where he had always found solitude and peace. The towering trees and their leaves whispering in the breeze felt different now. Everything appeared sharper, more detailed, as if his eyes had been reprogrammed to capture the finest nuances.
He sat in his usual spot, breathing slowly, sensing the changes in his body. Focusing his energy, he summoned the new strength he had gained from the "Beginner" sequence. He felt the Nen flowing through him, his body now denser and purer.
Raising his hand slowly, he noticed how his skin appeared tougher, how his muscles felt more flexible and possessed an unfamiliar strength. This wasn't a mere minor improvement; it was a true enhancement of his physical endurance. He sprinted between the trees faster than he had anticipated, his heart pounding with power, yet without the usual exhaustion. Every breath was measured, every movement calculated.
Over time, he became acutely aware of the survival instinct that had grown within him. It wasn't just a sense of danger—it was like an internal alarm system guiding and warning him of threats before his conscious mind even registered them. In an instant, he felt danger approaching from behind. Spinning swiftly, he saw a venomous snake lunging at him, but his body had already moved before he could fully process the threat.
Sam gave a slight smile—not of joy, but of relief. This was the strength he had been seeking, the first step on his journey toward immortality.
After hours of training and experimentation, he decided to return to his village. As he walked the familiar path, he noticed something strange: everything was exactly as he had left it. The houses, the trees, even the smallest details of the roads remained unchanged. Time outside had stood still, but Sam had changed forever.
When he entered the village, he felt something unexpected: nostalgia. He never thought he would miss this simple place, yet he did. The old houses, the scent of the fields, and the everyday sounds of life felt like an embrace after his long absence.
Back in his hut, he lay on his simple bed and closed his eyes. For the first time in a whole year, he slept deeply, free from the fear of losing his mind.
As the sun rose the next day, Sam woke early and went to help in the fields as he used to before his journey into the white space. These simple tasks reminded him of his humanity, reminding him that despite everything he had gained, part of him remained tied to this world.
While he worked, the village elder approached. He stood observing Sam for a few moments before stepping closer.
"You've changed, Sam."
Sam looked at him, offering a faint smile that hid much behind it. "Yes... a little, I suppose."
That was true, to an extent, but Sam was concealing the most important part of his abilities from the old man. Caution was part of his nature.
Sam knew this change was just the beginning. He had taken the first step on the Guardian Emperor path, but he fully understood that what lay ahead would be far more challenging… and far more dangerous.
