Saving the last phoenix from extinction [BL]

Chapter 11: Surprise assessment test

The blue creature was the length of an arm and the width of a man's thigh. It looked exactly like the snakes the only difference being the length and the four limbs the creature had.

The creative growled angrily and opened its mouth. Flames poured out of its mouth and burnt the nearest snake to a crisp. The other three noticing the turn of events immediately fled and the creature turned and looked at Yuki who had now slumped to the ground.

"Thank you for saving me," Yuki said smiling and the creature walked towards him curling up on his leg.

"Yuki! Yuki!"

The distant yelling woke up the creature and it raised its head looking at the pale faced kid. It lightly nudged the kid's hand and noticed two faint marks at the back of his hand. The creature licked the marks and they vanished almost instantly.

The shouts grew closer and closer and the blue creature flew up the tree and settled on a branch that was well hidden by some large leaves.

Chan looked around and only then did he spot Yuki laid up below a tree. He immediately dashed forward and the teacher who was with him rushed after him.

Chan knelt beside Yuki's body and gently nudged him trying to wake him but he remained motionless.

The teacher checked his pulse and turned to Chan who was on the verge of breaking down.

"He's fine. He's just unconscious," he said.

The teacher noticed the pile of ash and a few scattered scales. He looked around the area and noticing nothing but trees, pushed his concerns aside and walked towards the two kids.

He easily carried Yuki in his arms and Chan followed closely behind him as they made their way out of the trees.

The blue creature watched this in silence and carefully leapt from tree to tree following after the two.

Yuki stirred and opened his eyes blinking the fog from his sight.

He slowly sat up and was instantly embraced by Chan who had been by his side.

"You idiot! Do you know how worried I was? And you just had to be unconscious when I got back with help."

Yuki blinked and Chan pulled back, asking," Are you hurting anywhere?"

"No am fine but what about..."

He looked around him and realised he was in the school's infirmary with the creature that had saved him nowhere in sight.

Curious if Chan had seen it, he asked," Did you by any chance see the creature that saved me? It was about this long, this wide and blue in colour."

Chan looked at him before slowly shaking his head," What are you talking about? What creature? You were all alone when we found you."

Yuki's face fell as he responded half heartedly," Oh, I see."

The door creaked open and both lifted their heads looking towards the direction of the sound.

The intruder stood by the door hesitating whether to walk in or not.

"Um... may I come in?"

Yuki remembered him and hurriedly allowed him in. The guy walked in closing the door behind him.

"How are you feeling?" Yuki asked and the guy averted his gaze.

This person was too kind. He had sacrificed himself to allow Chan to help him out and now he wasn't resentful at all but was smiling at him. He had never met a person like him.

He approached Yuki's bed and grabbed both Yuki's hands in his and gently brought them to his forehead.

"Am sorry. You're in this state because of me," he said and Yuki froze.

"What are you talking about?" He asked confusedly.

Chan sighed and pat the person's shoulder," Enough of that Shun, look at how surprised he is."

The hamster, Shun, released his grip and Yuki smiled warmly.

"Why are you worried about me?" He asked before pointing to the bandages wrapped around Shun," you seem to be in a more severe situation than I."

Shun shook his head," Am fine thanks to both you and Chan. If you hadn't shown up on time am afraid I'd have been in those snakes' stomachs by now."

Chan slapped his back," Don't say something so scary with a straight face idiot."

Yuki watched the two bickering and smiled despite himself. The two reminded him of uncle Ling and Min when they first met each other.

Yuki made his bed and walked towards the window staring at the rising sun. After being bedridden for an entire week, he had successfully managed to convince Chan that he was okay to attend classes and after much persuasion and extensive medical check up, Chan stopped being a worry wart.

A knock sounded from the door followed by Chan's voice.

"Let's go get breakfast."

After breakfast, Yuki and Chan walked side by side heading towards their class.

"Morning," the teacher greeted.

"Morning!" The students replied in unison.

"Today we'll have a quick test before the actual lesson," the teacher said and the students groaned.

"Test?" Yuki asked Chan who sighed.

"A form of assessment to tell if we understand what is taught during class."

"But I don't understand anything at all," Yuki said panicked and Chan looked at him.

"You don't understand anything? Nothing at all?"

Yuki shook his head. It wasn't that he was not bright but everything they did was new to him. As he was contemplating an excuse, a paper was placed before him and Chan whispered 'good luck' to him before turning to his own paper.

Yuki licked his lips nervously before picking the paper and reading through the first question.

"Okay times up! Pens down," the teacher instructed and Yuki leaned against his chair exhausted.

The bell rang and the teacher walked out papers in hand. Chan and Yuki walked out of the classroom and numerous whispers about the test reached both their ears.

Chan, panicking stretched a hand and grabbed Yuki's shoulder.

"You okay?"

"I think I failed that test."

"Come on how sure are you that you failed? Maybe what you wrote on that paper is correct."

Yuki turned and looked at him, his eyebrows raised slightly," Wrote?"

Chan's hand that was on Yuki's shoulder stiffened at this.

"?"

"What were we supposed to write on the paper? I only wrote my name and handed it over when the teacher said to put the pens down."

Chan was speechless.

"Wait a moment Yuki, you didn't write anything on the paper apart from your name?"

"The paper said to answer what we can and since I didn't know anything, I handed the paper over."

Chan did not know whether to laugh or cry. He rubbed his temple and said nothing else afraid he might pass out if he heard anything else Yuki had to say.

They walked to their next class in silence and coincidentally bumped into Akira by the door.

"Hello you two. How's everything?"

"What brings you here? Your class is the last before lunch."

Akira nodded and held a paper with Yuki's name written on it. Chan rubbed his eyes and Yuki looked at him concerned.

"Did something get into your eye?"

"This reached my desk today and Chan, I suggest you help him out."

"Yes," Chan said and Akira pet their heads.

"Am counting on your helping him Chan. You know how important these exams are right?"

Chan nodded and Yuki glanced between the two.

Yuki walked into his room and flopped onto the bed. After a long exercise session, his legs were trembling and his entire body was sore from the numerous tedious workouts he had done.

A tap sounded from the window and Yuki raised his head slightly peering into the darkness.

Thinking he might have imagined the sound just now, his head fell onto the pillow.

Another tap sounded and Yuki sat up with difficulty. This time he hadn't imagined it, there was indeed something outside his window.

Slowly, he approached the window and opened it slightly revealing a small blue head.

As soon as he opened the window, Yuki's eyes locked onto the blue eyes of the creature.

Surprised, he leapt back and the creature which was dangling upside down lost its grip and fell on the window seal with a soft thud.

Yuki, ignoring his aching muscles, rushed over to it, worry creasing his brows. He picked up the creature which wrapped itself around his arm.

"You okay?"

The cold scales offered relief to Yuki's arm pain and he unconsciously let out a sigh.

The creature raised its head and Yuki smiled gratefully.

He walked back into the room, carefully set the creature on the bed before laying next to it.

"Where did you go to? I was worried."

The creature raised its head and a low growl came from its mouth.

"Well, whatever the reason, am glad you are safe."

Drowsiness and exhaustion soon overwhelmed Yuki and he fell asleep. The creature looked at him before crawling into his arms. Resting its head on Yuki's chest, it drifted off to sleep as well.

"Mum.. dad.. I miss you..."
