Chapter 9: Why were you crying?
Akira held the tea cup and took a slow sip watching the two men before her. Qi turned to Yuki and said," You'll be much safer at the school than out here with me."
"What? I don't want to go to school, what about my parents? Won't they be worried if they came back and found out am away?"
Qi placed a hand on his shoulder and squeezed it gently," They'll be glad you're putting your safety above everything else."
Yuki," But..."
Qi," No buts. You'll leave with Miss Akira and head to the school."
Yuki lowered his head not saying anything more and Qi sighed rubbing his eyes. Akira noticed the weird atmosphere between them and immediately cleared her throat.
"Ahem, well then, Yuki was it? Go ahead and pack your belongings dear."
Yuki stood up and headed to the room dejectedly.
Akira placed her cup on the table and turned to Qi," Are you sure about sending the kid to a boarding school?"
Qi smiled sadly," What else am I supposed to do Akira? Let him wander around and risk him getting captured?"
"The boy looked sad. Should I give him some time off? Maybe a week?"
Qi grabbed his head and sighed," Forget it. He's leaving today and that's final."
Akira shrugged her shoulders and leaned back against the seat," Fine by me."
In the room, Yuki sat on the bed his head buried in his hands.
Qi knocked on the door and Yuki remained silent.
"Yuki? Are you in there?"
"..."
Qi opened the door and walked into the room.
"Yuki, it's almost time to leave."
Yuki raised his head and looked at him. He managed a small nod and stood up from the bed. Qi sighed and walked towards him.
"Why were you crying?" He asked and Yuki shook his head.
"I was not crying Mr. Qi."
Qi cupped both Yuki's cheeks and raised his head. Yuki's eyes were red and swollen, a clear indication of crying.
Using his thumb, he gently rubbed his right eye.
"Look at you. Crying till your eyes get swollen. What would your mother think if she saw you like this?"
Yuki opened his eyes and looked at him.
"That's a good boy. Go with Miss Akira to the school."
"Will I be able to come here again?"
"Of course you will. This is your home, besides, it'll only take a couple of years to complete your studies and master your powers."
Yuki's ears perked up at this," Powers?"
Qi pat his head," Yes. You will learn how to control your powers at the school. Isn't that what you want most?"
"Looks like Mr. Qi wasn't abandoning me," Yuki mumbled to himself a smile on his lips.
Seeing everything Qi was doing in a new light, Yuki was no longer resistant to go to the school. He finished packing his belongings and minutes later, was standing at the door with Akira.
"We will take our leave first," Akira said and walked out of the door.
Yuki nodded and followed after her. He would occasionally glance back looking at Qi who stood by the door watching them leave. He looked back till Qi's figure was no more.
"Okay then kid. Next stop, dùte dè school."
Akira waved her hand in the air and a door appeared before them. She turned the door knob and stepped through the white light.
Yuki hesitated before following her through the door.
The sudden brightness forced him to shield his eyes and after five minutes, his eyesight became clearer.
He looked around the office and Akira smiled warmly," Welcome to dùte dè school. Starting today this will be your new home till you successfully learn to control your powers."
Yuki nodded and Akira produced a small card from her palm and passed it to him," Here. This is your student identification card."
Yuki took the card and Akira placed two fingers to her ear, said a few words and seconds later, a knock sounded from the door.
"Come in," Akira said and the door opened revealing a youth with lop ears.
The youth had light brown hair which was a similar shade to his ears.
"Yuki, meet Chan, he is the president of the class you'll be in."
Yuki turned to Chan and greeted him," Hello. Am Yuki, nice to meet you."
"Pleasure Yuki. If you're done with the head Mistress, I'll show you around."
Akira dismissed them and Chan grabbed Yuki's hand dashing out of the room.
Chan showed Yuki the entire school, his class, helped him to his dormitory room, got him his timetable and explained the rules to him.
Towards the end of the day, the bell rang and students rushed out of their classes.
"What's that sound?" He asked curiously and Chan, already accustomed to his questions, turned and pointed at the tallest building in the entire school.
"That sound came from up there and the thing that made that noise is the school bell. We use it to tell what we are supposed to do next."
"Oh, I see. Then right now..."
"Ah, it's dinner time. Let's go to the dining hall together," Chan offered and Yuki nodded his head, glad he didn't have to go alone.
Yuki sat with Chan and he couldn't help but look around at the new surroundings that would be his 'home' for a few years.
Numerous students filled the hall and Yuki noticed that they were all divided into groups.
Yuki gently nudged Chan who looked up," What's wrong?"
"Why are those people sitting so far away?" He asked pointing to the furthest end of the hall.
Chan followed his finger and swallowed his food before answering.
"Oh, those students are carnivores," Chan answered simply and Yuki tilted his head in confusion.
"Carnivores?"
"Yeah. They eat red meat and white meat whereas we eat food grown from the ground like fruits and vegetables," a voice sounded from across the table.
Yuki turned his head and looked at the woman before him, two small ears were perked up on her head, twitching left and right. She held a plate of cheese which she munched happily.
"Ah, I see," Yuki said and resumed eating from his own plate.
"You're the new student right?" She asked and Yuki nodded.
"My name is Yuki," he said and the woman smiled.
"Am Li, third year student," she said a warm smile on her lips.
"She's our senior so you better address her accordingly," Chan reminded Yuki and he nodded his head.
"So, you're curious about the carnivores right? I noticed your eyes shifting to their side of the hall," Li said and Yuki nodded his head.
"If you don't mind my asking but what's a carnivore?" Yuki asked and both Li and Chan flinched slightly before schooling their expressions.
"You don't know what a carnivore is?" Chan asked and Yuki nodded his head.
"Back home, it was just my family and I."
Li rested her chin on her hand," Carnivores are those who eat red meat or white meat as I stated earlier. A good example would be a wolf, fox, lion and so forth. It would be wise not to get tangled up with them."
"A fox? My father once rescued a fox and he's my friend back home," Yuki said and Li pet his head.
"Just be careful around them is what am implying."
Yuki nodded feeling at ease conversing with two of his friends.
After dinner, Chan was handed some work to which he had to tend to immediately. He apologised to Yuki and promised to show him the remaining things the following day and disappeared to the teacher's quarters.
Yuki retraced his footsteps to the room he would be staying in.
The room was not too big and could accommodate one person. To the right near the window was the single bed, across from the bed was the table and a few feet from the door was the closet.
Yuki plopped on the bed looking at the ceiling lost in thought.
Cuddling up with the doll his mother had given him, he slowly drifted off to sleep.
A knock sounded on the door and Yuki, who had been up way before the sun had risen walked towards the door and opened it.
Chan stood before him clothes in hand.
"Morning, I forgot to hand over your uniform," Chan said and Yuki took the clothes, thanked him and walked back into the room.
"I'll wait for you in the dining hall for breakfast then we can go to class," Chan said as he walked down the hall.
"Okay."
After breakfast, Yuki headed to his first class and sat beside Chan because he knew no one else.
"The first class is literature," Chan said noticing Yuki's furrowed brow.
"Here we learn about all living beings, their classes, weaknesses, strengths and so on."
Yuki nodded and the door opened a lady walking onto the front of the class. With a single glance, Yuki could tell it was Akira.
Akira greeted the class and her gaze landed on Yuki.
"What's this? We have a new student among us. Please, stand up and introduce yourself," Akira said and Yuki gulped before nervously standing up.
"Hello, my name is Yuki. I look forward to studying with you and getting along well."
The girls around giggled, murmuring about how cute he was while the guys paid no attention to him.
Akira indicated for him to sit and continued her lesson. At the end of the lesson, Yuki played with his pen re reading the notes on the book he had borrowed from Chan clearly not understanding a single thing.
