Shadow slave:The Forgotten Spawn

Chapter 76: The Edge of the rift

Chapter: The Edge of the Rift

The remnants of the battlefield were quiet now, the echoes of the brutal confrontation still lingering in the air. Eryth, Tessa, and the others stood in a loose circle, their breath shallow, their bodies worn from the unrelenting series of battles they'd endured.

It was clear that the group was growing weary. The rift's influence on their minds and bodies had begun to take its toll. Nyx, though injured, stood by Eryth's side, its form flickering with a strange energy—almost as if something was awakening within it.

"I can feel it," Eryth muttered, his hand pressing against his chest. A pulsating warmth from the rift seemed to crawl under his skin, its presence growing stronger. "The rift… it's reaching out to me again."

"Do you think it's the same as before?" Tessa asked, her eyes scanning the surroundings, ever vigilant. "We've barely managed to push through. Another attack could break us."

Eryth's gaze narrowed. The rift had been unpredictable, and each encounter with its forces had only made their situation more precarious. "I don't know. But whatever's coming, we'll have to face it together. We can't afford to fall apart now."

Just as the last words left his mouth, the ground trembled, and a dark, ominous figure emerged from the shadows. The air thickened with an unnatural energy, and for a moment, it felt as though the very world itself was holding its breath.

Then, a voice echoed through the stillness.

"You've done well to survive thus far," the figure said, stepping into the moonlight. It was a man, tall and cloaked in darkness, his eyes glowing faintly like distant stars. His presence was unsettling, as though the very space around him was warped by some unseen force.

"Who are you?" Tessa demanded, stepping forward, her hands already reaching for her weapon. "Another servant of the rift?"

The man smiled, a cold, calculating expression. "In a way, yes. But I'm no servant. I am a guide—someone who can help you understand the rift, and the power it holds. If you're willing to listen, of course."

The group remained tense, but Eryth felt something stir within him—a pull, something familiar. He couldn't explain it, but something about the man's words felt… right. At least, that's how it seemed at first.

"What's your game?" Eryth asked, his voice steady but wary.

"I don't have a game," the man replied, his eyes narrowing with interest. "I only want to show you what lies beyond this path, to help you become something greater."

"Greater?" Tessa scoffed. "You're no different than the rest. We've seen enough of your kind."

The man's smile remained, but there was a flicker of amusement in his gaze. "You think you've seen all that the rift can offer? You've barely scratched the surface. But I suppose it's understandable. You've been running from it, fighting it, without ever truly understanding what it is."

Eryth's heart raced. He couldn't explain why, but something about the man's words resonated deep within him. He glanced at Tessa, who was still glaring at the figure, her grip tight on her weapon.

"Enough talking. We need answers," Eryth said, taking a step toward the figure. "If you're here to help, prove it."

The figure chuckled, his voice cold and distant. "Very well. But you'll have to prove something as well."

With a sudden movement, the man extended his hand, and the air around them grew heavy with an unseen pressure. Eryth felt a pull in his chest, as though something was calling him forward.

Without warning, the rift surged to life again, this time stronger, fiercer. The ground cracked, and shadows seemed to bleed from the very earth, swirling around them like a storm.

"Fight me," the man commanded, his voice now carrying an edge of authority. "Show me your resolve."

Tessa leaped forward without hesitation, but the shadows twisted, warping around her strikes, and she was forced back. Eryth's heart pounded as he felt the immense weight of the rift pressing against him.

"Do not hold back," the man urged, his eyes locked on Eryth. "The rift's power is yours to command. Embrace it."

The ground shook beneath them, and Eryth's mind reeled. He wasn't sure what the man meant, but he knew that if they were to survive this, they would need more than just strength. They would need to understand the rift—its secrets, its power.

And maybe, just maybe, this strange figure could help them unlock it.
