Chapter 80: Shadows of Resolve
Chapter: Shadows of Resolve
The crystalline beast lunged, its massive claws descending like falling blades. Eryth didn't flinch. With a flick of his hand, the shadows around him surged forward, forming jagged tendrils that intercepted the creature's attack. The impact reverberated through the tunnel, sending shards of crystal flying in every direction.
The beast roared in frustration, its movements growing more erratic as it fought against the tendrils. Eryth gritted his teeth, his body trembling as he poured every ounce of strength into maintaining control. The rift's energy coursed through him, wild and untamed, threatening to consume him if he let his focus slip.
"Keep it distracted!" Tessa yelled, darting forward with her blade flashing. She aimed for the cracks they'd already made in the creature's crystalline armor, her strikes precise and relentless.
Nyx was a blur of motion, leaping onto the beast's back and sinking its fangs into the exposed shards. Its claws tore through the glowing crystals with feral intensity, forcing the creature to stagger.
The rest of the group rallied, their fear giving way to determination as they joined the assault. Arrows and bolts of energy struck the beast from a distance, while those with melee weapons targeted its vulnerable joints.
But the creature was far from defeated. With a guttural roar, it unleashed another shockwave of energy, sending everyone flying. Eryth slammed into the wall, the impact knocking the wind out of him.
"Eryth!" Tessa shouted, struggling to her feet. Blood trickled from a gash on her forehead, but her eyes were fierce. "You've got to end this! Whatever you did before—do it again!"
Eryth groaned, pushing himself upright. The rift's energy pulsed within him, a chaotic storm that demanded release. He didn't know if he could control it, but he also knew they wouldn't survive if he didn't try.
Closing his eyes, he reached deep into himself, past the fear and doubt, and tapped into the raw power that had been awakened within him. The shadows responded instantly, swirling around him like a living entity.
When he opened his eyes, they glowed with an unnatural light, and the tendrils of shadow erupted outward with a force that shook the tunnel. The creature recoiled, its body cracking as the shadows tore through its crystalline armor.
Eryth stepped forward, his movements almost instinctive as he directed the shadows with a wave of his hand. The tendrils wrapped around the beast, binding it in place as they squeezed tighter and tighter.
The creature howled, its body shattering under the relentless pressure. Cracks spread across its form, light pouring out from within as it reached its breaking point.
With one final surge of energy, the beast exploded into a shower of crystal shards and shadow, the shockwave rippling through the tunnel.
The aftermath was eerily quiet. Eryth stood in the center of the wreckage, his body trembling as the shadows slowly receded. The others stared at him in stunned silence, their expressions a mix of awe and fear.
Tessa was the first to speak. "You… you did it."
Eryth looked down at his hands, his breathing ragged. The rift's energy still lingered, but it felt different now—more controlled, more a part of him.
"We need to keep moving," he said, his voice hoarse. "The tower is close. Whatever's inside… it's waiting for us."
Tessa nodded, though her eyes lingered on him for a moment longer. "Let's move. Stay together, and watch for any more surprises."
As they continued toward the nexus, Eryth couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. The power he'd used to defeat the creature had come at a cost, and he could feel the weight of it pressing down on him.
Nyx walked beside him, its presence steady and reassuring. The creature seemed unfazed by what had happened, its glowing eyes fixed on the path ahead.
Eryth glanced at Tessa, who was speaking quietly with another member of the group. Her confidence and determination were unwavering, but he could see the worry etched on her face.
They were all scared, and rightfully so. The rift had already taken so much from them, and now it was asking for more. But as they approached the towering nexus, Eryth made a silent vow.
Whatever the cost, he wouldn't let this power consume him. He would master it—or die trying.
