Sharingan Evolution: Proficiency's Path

Chapter 155: Chapter 155: Futility

Boom!

A violent explosion erupted, followed by a bright red fireball that dispelled the surrounding darkness.

Immediately, the defensive perimeter of the Iwagakure camp ahead was filled with shouting voices.

Judging by the direction of the sounds, they were all rushing towards the explosion.

The squad that Aoyama was in did not engage, and the other two teams remained silent as well. This was an anticipated accident.

According to the plan, if a team were to be exposed, the other squads were to follow a set course of action.

If Aoyama recalled correctly, the team that had been exposed would now go all out to draw the enemy's fire.

Then, the remaining teams—still undetected—would strike from the shadows, directly disrupting the rhythm of the Iwagakure forces stationed at the base.

The goal was to minimize losses and complete the mission as swiftly as possible.

As time passed, the clamor of battle grew louder, and the sound of exploding paper bombs became frequent.

The mere sound of the chaos indicated how intense the fight on the other side had become.

After about five minutes, Aoyama's hundred-man squad began to move, charging directly toward the Iwagakure base ahead.

At the same time, the other two squads, which had not yet been exposed, advanced from two other directions, converging on the Iwagakure base.

Because they didn't attempt to conceal their movements, the Iwagakure forces quickly detected them.

In response, Iwagakure immediately scrambled reinforcements to intercept them, even exposing some of their hidden tactics.

It was only now that Aoyama realized the Iwagakure camp had more troops than initially estimated.

Typically, Konoha's forward bases housed around 100 to 120 shinobi, usually led by 3 to 5 Jōnin (including Special Jōnin). The squad composition was usually two-thirds Chūnin and one-third Genin.

Iwagakure, having the largest number of shinobi in the world, usually deployed between 150 and 180 shinobi per base. They had a similar number of Jōnin, about 3 to 5, while their forces were evenly split between Chūnin and Genin.

According to previous intelligence, this base was supposed to be depleted, with Ōnoki having pulled 100 troops away, leaving only 50 to 80 behind.

But now, there were nearly 50 more Iwagakure shinobi than the intelligence had indicated.

Clearly, they had returned in secret.

The most likely reason for this was to guard against any surprise attacks from Konoha. If possible, Iwagakure probably hoped to ambush them as well.

It had to be said—Iwagakure's leadership was quite cunning.

If the other Iwagakure bases were similarly reinforced, the Konoha squads responsible for feint attacks might have already fallen into their trap.

However, they didn't need to worry about taking heavy losses. Even with the reinforcements, the Iwagakure forces here were only on par with their own.

And since Iwagakure's average strength was lower than Konoha's, they might face obstacles, but there wouldn't be a major disaster.

Fortunately, those squads were only conducting feint attacks. They didn't need to win—just to tie down the enemy's forces and prevent them from providing reinforcements.

In the end, the decisive battle would still take place here.

All these thoughts flashed through Aoyama's mind in an instant. Leading the charge, he sprinted forward, aiming directly at a Jōnin from Iwagakure who was commanding the enemy forces.

Upon seeing Aoyama charging at him, the Iwagakure Jōnin didn't hesitate. He immediately signaled for the shinobi behind him to launch an attack on Aoyama.

In an instant, a storm of kunai rained down, dense enough to force most Jōnin to retreat.

However, Aoyama was different. Without slowing his pace, he activated his three-tomoe Sharingan just before the kunai struck.

In that moment, the kunai seemed to slow to a crawl in Aoyama's eyes, their every trajectory clear.

He deftly dodged some kunai and then unsheathed the short sword at his waist, parrying several others.

Squelch! Squelch!

The sound of blades piercing flesh echoed.

The kunai he deflected spun back, striking several Iwagakure Genin directly in their chests.

Through his Sharingan, Aoyama could see the shock on their faces, quickly replaced by fear and unwillingness.

But Aoyama remained unmoved.

Once you step onto the battlefield, you must take responsibility for your life. That applies to him just as it does to them.

Aoyama withdrew his gaze, no longer concerned with those he had struck down.

At this moment, he had already closed in on the Iwagakure Jōnin. The tomoe in his Sharingan began to spin rapidly as he unleashed his full power.

"Sharingan?!" the Iwagakure Jōnin exclaimed in alarm.

To his credit, his reaction was quick. The moment he saw Aoyama's Sharingan, he closed his eyes and leaped into the crowd of Iwagakure shinobi.

Unable to lock onto him, Aoyama shifted his focus to the less prepared Chūnin and Genin around him.

A moment later, a series of dull thuds echoed as several Iwagakure shinobi fell to the ground, completely hypnotized by Aoyama.

Had it not been for the quick response of the remaining Iwagakure forces, they would have been trampled to death.

Even so, falling in battle was unlikely to end well for them, especially with over a hundred Konoha shinobi closing in from behind.

Seeing the disruption in the Iwagakure formation, the Konoha forces charged in to engage.

Aoyama, however, once again set his sights on the Iwagakure Jōnin.

But this time, the Jōnin had already gathered several Iwagakure Chūnin, preparing to face Aoyama as a group.

Clearly, he understood the "weakness" of the Sharingan.

But such tactics wouldn't work against Aoyama.

To truly counter his Sharingan, they needed at least one shinobi of his level working in concert with another. A few Chūnin wouldn't cut it.

Aoyama chuckled softly, then used the Body Flicker Technique to vanish from sight.

"Ichiki, right side!" the Iwagakure Jōnin's voice rang out.

Hearing this, the confused Iwagakure Chūnin named Ichiki immediately turned to his right, raising his kunai in preparation for Aoyama's attack.

However, no attack came. Ichiki saw only a blurred afterimage of Aoyama.

Whoosh!

A shuriken flew through the afterimage left behind by Aoyama.

"Shika, left side!" the Iwagakure Jōnin shouted again, warning another Chūnin.

The Chūnin named Shika, now on high alert, turned to the left, only to see another afterimage of Aoyama.

Moments later, this afterimage was pierced by a kunai thrown by the Iwagakure Jōnin.

And so it continued.

Aoyama used the Body Flicker repeatedly, and the Chūnin, wary of the Sharingan's genjutsu, struggled to keep up. They were forced to rely on the Iwagakure Jōnin's guidance.

But this indirect approach could only fend off Aoyama for so long.

Soon, Aoyama appeared beside one of the Chūnin. Though the Iwagakure Jōnin quickly called out a warning, their coordination faltered.

Aoyama seized the opportunity. His Sharingan's hypnotic power flared, instantly incapacitating the Chūnin.

In the next moment, he deflected the Jōnin's attack with his short sword.

This was why a shinobi of equal rank was necessary to counter the Sharingan. Relying on instructions alone would eventually lead to mistakes.

Once Aoyama found an opening, the rest was simple.

He repeated the process with the remaining Chūnin. With one member of their group down, Aoyama's movements became even smoother.

In less than five minutes, all the Chūnin assisting the Iwagakure Jōnin had fallen.

Facing the last remaining enemy, Aoyama grinned wickedly and exclaimed, "Now it's just the two of us—the real fight begins!"

Without giving the Jōnin a chance to respond, Aoyama kicked off the ground, launching himself like a bullet.

Seeing Aoyama suddenly appear in front of him, the Jōnin, Ishida Shinsuke, hastily raised his kunai to block.
