Shinobi Awakening : Rebirth

Chapter 12: Dojutsu awakening

Without giving it much thought, I took a running start and leaped towards the river. The wind rushed past me, and for a brief, exhilarating moment, I felt like I could actually fly—until reality slapped me back down. My feet hit the water's surface, and instead of bouncing, I sank like a stone. The cold water gushed into my nose and mouth, and for a second, I panicked. I hadn't anticipated how hard it would be to copy Tetsu's move.

Spluttering and flailing, I managed to break the surface, only to see Anko's disapproving gaze and Hiroshi's horrified expression as they watched from the safety of the other side. "Ryo, what are you doing?" Anko called out, her arms folded across her chest.

"I was... uh, just... testing the water?" I replied lamely, trying to wipe the river off my face.

"It seems the river tested you," Anko said dryly, turning to Hirosho. "And how did you manage to cross, Hiroshi?" I asked.

The merchant, still looking slightly green, pointed at Anko. "She... she carried me. Like a... like a little baby."

Yumi chuckled, her teeth chattering slightly from the cold river water. "Well, it seems we're all getting a taste of the great outdoors, Ryo," she said, a hint of sarcasm in her voice. She sat up and took a deep breath, her emerald eyes scanning the riverbank for any signs of trouble. Her skin was covered in small scratches from her earlier tumble through the tree branches, but she ignored the discomfort, focusing instead on the mission at hand.

With a determined look, she placed her hands on the wounds. A faint green aura began to emanate from her palms, a sign of her medical ninjutsu activating. The scratches on her arms and legs closed up as if sewn together by invisible threads, the skin knitting back together in a mesmerizing display of healing power. The team watched in amazement as the last of the injuries vanished, leaving only a faint trace of redness that soon faded.

"It's all about knowing your limits, Ryo," Yumi said with a small smirk as she helped me to my feet. "But if it makes you feel better, I'm sure I can find something less... dramatic for you to learn next time."

Tetsu, his usual stoic facade cracking slightly, couldn't resist chiming in. "I just hope I never have to be on the receiving end of that jutsu," he said, eyeing Yumi's hands warily. "I'd hate to have to deal with your... tender touch."

Yumi's smirk grew wider at Tetsu's comment. "Don't worry, I promise to be extra rough," she assured him, her voice laced with sarcasm. Despite the light-hearted banter, the team couldn't ignore the underlying tension. They were all aware of the seriousness of their mission and the potential dangers that lay ahead.

Anko's gaze grew distant, a hint of pride flickering in her eyes as she watched her students interact. "You're all doing well," she said, her voice firm and reassuring. "We're halfway to the village of Kusagakure now, and so far, your biggest enemy has been that riverbank."

I bristled at her words, my competitive spirit rising. "What's that supposed to mean?" I challenged, my voice edged with annoyance. "My Otsutsuki blood should be enough to outdo anything thrown at me."

Anko raised an eyebrow, her eyes narrowing as she studied my reaction. "It's not about bloodlines, Ryo," she said firmly. "It's about hard work, strategy, and teamwork. You might have the potential, but without the right mindset, you're as good as any rookie ninja."

Her words stung, but I knew she was right. I had been relying too much on my heritage, expecting it to carry me through without putting in the effort. "You're right, Anko-sensei," I conceded, feeling a bit embarrassed. "I'll work harder."

As we continued along the path, the terrain grew increasingly difficult. The dense foliage thinned out, revealing a massive rock formation that loomed before us. It was like a giant had decided to play a cruel game of Jenga with the earth, leaving a jagged maze of boulders and cliffs that stretched as far as the eye could see.

"Looks like we've got our work cut out for us," Anko said, her eyes scanning the labyrinthine structure with a hint of amusement. "This should be a good test of your navigation and teamwork skills."

Her words barely registered as my irritation grew. I couldn't shake off the feeling of inadequacy her words had stirred within me. I clenched my fists, focusing all my frustration into a single point of energy. My left eye began to throb, a sensation that grew more intense with every heartbeat. Suddenly, the world around me grew hazy, and my vision in that eye changed. The colors grew duller, replaced by a stark contrast of light and shadow. The veins around my eye started to pulse with a dark blue light.

I had heard the whispers about the Kanashimigan, the Dojutsu of the Aoyoki clan. Supposedly, it could only be triggered by intense emotional pain, but here it was, awakening in me in the midst of a simple C-rank mission. My teammates looked on in astonishment as the black and blue swirls grew more pronounced, giving my eye a sinister appearance.

"What the hell is happening to me?" I muttered, feeling a sudden surge of power that was almost overwhelming.

Yumi and Tetsu stared in awe as my eye began to pulse with an eerie blue light, dark blue and black swirls spiraling around my pupil like a storm threatening to engulf my iris. The pain was intense, but it wasn't the physical agony I had expected. It was as if my very soul was being torn apart, my pride and ego laid bare. Yet, amidst the turmoil, there was a strange clarity. I understood what the whispers had been about—this was the awakening of the Kanashimigan, the Dojutsu that marked me as a descendant of the feared Aoyoki clan.

My body responded to the sudden influx of power, muscles tensing and reflexes sharpening. The world around me grew crisp, every leaf and pebble in stark detail. The power surging through me was incredible, but I knew I couldn't let it consume me. The rock formation loomed ahead, a challenge that had once seemed insurmountable. Now, with the power of the Kanashimigan, it was nothing but an obstacle to be cleared.

I took a deep breath, focusing the chaotic energy within me. The pain in my eye grew stronger, but I pushed it aside, channeling the power into my hand. I knew that this was a moment of truth, a test of whether I could harness this gift or if it would destroy me. I formed the hand seals, my chakra coalescing into a form I hadn't felt before—like a whirlwind of ice and fire.
