Chapter 12: Chapter 12: The Trap is Set
With Shazhu fired from the factory, his life had started to spiral out of control. He had no job, no stable income, and no future prospects. Yet, he still clung to the delusion that he would somehow be able to turn things around.
Meanwhile, I had been carefully laying the groundwork for his downfall. The past few weeks, I had anonymously spread a rumor throughout the factory and courtyard—that Shazhu had connections to the black market and had been selling food for personal gain. Since he had been caught stealing factory leftovers before, people were quick to believe it.
To make the rumors even more credible, I secretly planted some valuable goods—sugar, flour, and a small stash of pork—behind his home, hidden just well enough that he wouldn't question why they were there, but easy enough for him to find.
One evening, as planned, Shazhu stumbled upon the hidden supplies. His eyes widened with greed and desperation. "Where did this come from?" he muttered, looking around cautiously.
At that moment, Qin Huairu appeared, her usual look of concern plastered on her face. "Shazhu, you've been struggling lately. You can't keep going like this without money."
Shazhu hesitated, but his desperation overruled his common sense. "Maybe… maybe I can sell some of this in the black market," he whispered, as if convincing himself.
That was exactly what I had planned.
The bait had been taken.
The next day, Shazhu wrapped some of the items in a cloth bag and left for the underground market.
Unknown to him, I had already tipped off the authorities, letting them know that a former factory worker was engaging in illegal food transactions.
By the time he reached the black market, the security team was already in position.
Just as he handed over some of the goods to a buyer, the officers stormed in.
"Shazhu! You're under arrest for black market trading!" one of them shouted.
Shazhu's face turned pale, his mind racing. "N-No! This is a misunderstanding!"
But it was too late. The officers grabbed him, and the whole black market erupted in chaos as vendors scattered, hoping to avoid capture.
As Shazhu was dragged away, his mind reeled. Who had set him up?
But he never got the chance to figure it out.
