Chapter 23: Challenge
The city of Fogmira where the buildings were made of yellow stone tiles was still daytime when Enzo returned there.
It was said that one day in the Primordial World was equivalent to two days on earth.
It would probably take another 12 hours before this world became night.
Having only been here for a short while, Enzo didn't really remember its shape.
Only, he found that there were more Awakeners in sight than there had been this afternoon.
They and the locals seemed busy, as if there was going to be a big event in the city.
The direction they were all heading was the same, to the city center.
The curious Enzo naturally followed them.
In the center of the city was a large, imposing castle.
It didn't have any fortifications surrounding it but was surrounded by a large street that became the town square.
Everyone was gathered there, staring at the castle as if waiting for something.
"What's going on?" Enzo who had trouble getting information just by listening to people's conversations could not help but ask the city's native, a young man.
"Mr. Adventure..." The young man looked surprised when asked by him, as if he couldn't believe that he could interact with an Adventure.
"Don't you know yet?" he said, in return.
Enzo shook his head, not having enough emotion to snap at him.
"The ruler of the city has challenged the adventures to a duel with a monster and the one who passes this challenge will receive a great reward. However, we don't know what the prize is yet," the young man replied.
"Ohhh..."
Enzo thought this was interesting, he became more curious so he stepped closer to the castle.
However, he could not enter the courtyard.
The soldiers were guarding the castle grounds, blocking people who wanted to enter.
They said to wait for the lord of the city to come out of his castle.
Fortunately, not long after Enzo arrived, a group of people came out of the castle, led by a man whose hair had started to turn white.
He seemed to be in his 50s, but his health might be a little troubled which made him seem to lack vitality.
Even so, he still gave off a very authoritative impression with his blue robe that had two crossed swords embroidered on it.
Enzo had no doubt that he was the ruler of this city.
To his left was a hunchbacked old man carrying a staff while to his right was a knight wearing silver armor and carrying a golden sword, giving off a very powerful impression.
The three of them were followed by elite soldiers who were all wearing armor.
"City lord! City lord!" Suddenly the natives greeted him excitedly.
They seemed to love him very much.
Considering that he gave asylum to the remote villagers, Enzo wasn't surprised that he had been leading so well that his people were happy with him.
However, that wasn't important to him, he just wanted to see the challenge she gave.
"Elder Mao, please!" He suddenly said to the old man carrying the staff.
Although the distance was quite far, the Awakeners could hear his voice due to their hearing becoming sharper.
The old man nodded after hearing his words.
He then pointed his staff at the castle grounds.
"Come, Sky Kekkai!" He shouted.
From his staff gathered light that flowed into the courtyard and then transformed into an enormous, thick cube of light.
It gave the impression of being indestructible.
More interestingly it had one part similar to a door.
"Let go!" The old man shouted again, pointing his staff upwards.
From under the ground, there suddenly appeared an iron cage that was up to five meters high and inside was a human figure surrounded by grass with fiery red eyes.
The figure was almost five meters tall so the iron cage could barely contain it.
It was a Swamp Zombie, of course.
However, it looked different to the Swamp Zombies that Enzo had encountered because it had a pair of wings on its back, similar to bat wings.
BANG!
Suddenly the iron cage shattered on its own, setting the zombie free.
ROAR!
It roared, flapping its wings to glide forward and crash into the wall of the cube of light called Sky Kekkai.
However, when it crashed into the wall, it bounced back until it almost fell.
Its roar became louder, which showed how angry he was at finding himself still confined.
DING!
(Swamp Zombie Level 10
- Status: Half-Boss!)
Enzo suddenly received a notification and it was the same for the other Awakeners as they were equally surprised.
It actually had the status of Half-Bosses, no wonder it had wings.
A monster like this was not an easy opponent even for Awakeners who had reached the beginner's limit.
"Adventure friends. I am here to invite any of you to defeat this monster but this challenge is only for those of you with Beginner Rank. Expert ranks are not allowed to participate. Whoever succeeds will get a reward from me..." The city lord finally spoke out loud.
All the Awakeners who heard that looked at each other with serious expressions.
"This isn't easy," some of them said.
"Yes, these monsters are very fast and can even fly. I'm afraid if we're late, we won't have time to return to Earth. This challenge has a high risk of death except for those with strong skills."
"As expected, it's impossible for the city lord to give a challenge that can be taken by everyone."
"..."
"City lord, what reward will you give? You'd better tell us..." Suddenly a man asked the city lord a question.
He even stepped forward.
He was young, around James and Owen's age.
He was tall but rather thin, having fairly long blonde hair.
On his back, there was a large black sword, giving the impression of having a great deal of weight.
"Hm, Luke, he seems to be up for the challenge," people said when they saw him, indicating that he was quite famous among the rookies.
The answer to his question was something everyone was looking forward to, they looked at the city lord curiously.
Everything indeed depended on the reward he would give. If it was attractive, people who were confident enough would not hesitate to accept this challenge.
"The prize is still a secret for now, this challenge is only for those who dare to take risks," replied the city lord with a casual tone and a faint smile.
He actually refused to say it, no wonder it hadn't been announced until now.
"Young man, if you feel brave, you can accept this challenge," he added towards Luke and seemed to provoke him.
The latter was not afraid, yet he still seemed to be thinking, same for the others.
In situations like this, people might wonder whether it was better to be the former or the latter.
The problem is that if the former succeeds, the latter will not get another chance.
However, the danger level was high, so it was important to look at others first.
When everyone was thinking, Enzo suddenly stepped forward with a spear hanging on his back.
"I will accept this challenge," he said in a loud voice.
He chose to be the first to step forward without much thought because he was pretty sure he could defeat the monster.
If he could, why worry. When else would he have the chance to duel with a monster that could give him so many Attribute Points.
Searching outside wasn't easy and even if he met one, defeating it would be difficult as each Half-Boss was assisted by many powerful subordinates.
Here, it was even confined so its movements were limited which practically made it very easy for him to defeat it.
