Chapter 17: Chapter 17: A New Ally
The cold night air bit at Ishizaki's face as he sprinted through the ruins, his knife gripped tightly in one hand. Behind him, Drax carried Mei on his back, his heavy footsteps thudding against the cracked pavement. Hana and Ryo followed close behind, their faces pale with fear.
"Keep moving!" Ishizaki shouted over his shoulder.
"Hostiles closing in," Solus said, its calm voice cutting through the chaos. "Estimated distance: one hundred meters."
"I don't need the play-by-play," Ishizaki muttered, his chest heaving with every breath.
The stranger stumbled behind them, their breathing labored. Ishizaki glanced back, his jaw tightening. "Move it, or you'll be the first one caught," he snapped.
The stranger smirked faintly, their pace quickening. "You've got a real way with words, kid," they said, their voice steady despite their exhaustion.
"Not the time," Drax growled.
The Pursuit Begins
The group ducked into a narrow alley, the sound of boots and distant shouts echoing behind them. Ishizaki's enhanced senses picked up the faint hum of energy weapons charging, and his grip on the knife tightened.
"They're getting closer," Hana whispered, her voice trembling.
"I know," Ishizaki said, his tone sharper than he intended. "Just keep running."
The stranger suddenly stopped, their eyes narrowing as they looked toward the rooftops. "Incoming," they said.
Ishizaki followed their gaze, his stomach sinking as a squad of enforcers appeared above them, their rifles aimed downward.
"Scatter!" he shouted, shoving the kids toward Drax.
Before the enforcers could fire, the stranger raised a hand to their chest, pressing a button on the glowing device embedded there. A burst of energy erupted from the device, forming a shimmering barrier that deflected the first volley of plasma bolts.
Drax's eyes widened. "What the hell—"
"Don't just stand there," the stranger said, their voice sharp. "Go!"
Stranger's Gender Revealed
As the group ran, the stranger fell in step beside Ishizaki, their breathing heavy but steady. The glow of the device in their chest dimmed slightly, its energy spent from the sudden activation.
"You didn't tell us you could do that," Ishizaki said, his tone laced with suspicion.
"You didn't ask," the stranger replied with a faint smirk. She pulled her hood back slightly, revealing short, dark hair matted with sweat and a jagged scar running across her jawline.
Ishizaki blinked, caught off guard. "Wait… you're—"
"A woman? Yeah, last time I checked," she said with a wry grin.
"Not sure that's relevant right now," Drax growled, his hammer resting on his shoulder as he glanced at her warily. "What's more important is whether we can trust you."
"Trust me or not," she said, her tone hardening. "I just saved your asses. So maybe hold off on the interrogation until we're not being shot at."
Ishizaki opened his mouth to reply, but a sudden explosion cut him off.
Fighting to Escape
A squad of enforcers blocked their path, their rifles aimed and ready. Ishizaki's body tensed, the glow of Blade Resonance flickering along his knife.
"Stay behind me," he said to the kids, stepping forward.
"Like hell you're doing this alone," Drax said, moving to his side.
The stranger rolled her shoulders, the faint glow of her device flaring as she raised her fists. "I've got your back, kid."
The fight was brutal and chaotic. Ishizaki moved with precision, his enhanced reflexes guiding him through the hail of plasma bolts. His blade slashed through rifles and armor, each strike fueled by desperation.
Drax swung his hammer in wide arcs, sending enforcers flying with each thunderous blow. Beside him, the stranger darted forward, her movements quick and efficient. Her punches crackled with energy, each strike sending shocks through the enforcers' armor.
"You fight like someone who's done this before," Drax muttered, glancing at her.
The stranger didn't reply, her focus locked on the fight.
A New Threat
By the time the last enforcer fell, Ishizaki was on his knees, his chest heaving and his knife slipping from his trembling hand.
"Energy levels critical," Solus said. "Recommend immediate recovery."
"No kidding," Ishizaki muttered.
The group barely had time to catch their breath before Solus's voice cut through the silence again.
"Warning," it said. "Large energy signature detected. Direction: northeast."
Ishizaki's head snapped up. "What is it?"
"Unknown," Solus replied. "However, its magnitude suggests advanced technology or an elite combat unit."
The stranger frowned, her gaze darkening. "If it's what I think it is, we're in trouble."
"What do you mean?" Ishizaki asked.
She hesitated, her jaw tightening. "Just trust me. We need to move. Now."
The air was thick with tension as the group ran through the ruins, their footsteps pounding against the cracked pavement. Ishizaki led the way, his knife glowing faintly in his hand, though his movements were slower and less steady than before.
"Warning," Solus said in his mind, its voice sharper than usual. "Energy reserves critical. Physical strain at unsustainable levels."
"I know," Ishizaki muttered, his chest heaving with every breath.
"Then stop pushing," Drax growled, catching up to him. "You're gonna drop dead before we even make it out of here."
"I can handle it," Ishizaki snapped, though his trembling hands betrayed his words.
The faint hum of the energy signature grew louder, sending a shiver down his spine. He glanced back at the kids, who clung to Drax and the stranger, their faces pale with fear.
"Keep moving," he said, his voice firm despite the exhaustion that weighed him down.
The Chase Intensifies
They rounded a corner and came face-to-face with the source of the energy signature—a massive, spider-like drone, its sleek metal body bristling with glowing weapons. Its central eye glowed red, locking onto the group with deadly precision.
"Target acquired," a cold, mechanical voice said.
"Move!" Ishizaki shouted, shoving the kids forward as a searing beam of energy shot past them, scorching the ground where they'd just stood.
The group scattered, darting between crumbling walls and debris as the drone unleashed a barrage of plasma bolts. Ishizaki darted forward, his knife flashing as he slashed at one of its legs. The blade hummed with resonance, cutting through the metal like butter.
The drone staggered, but its weapons swung toward him with deadly speed. Ishizaki twisted away, his enhanced reflexes saving him from a direct hit, but the strain on his body was unbearable.
"Host performance degrading," Solus said. "Recommend immediate withdrawal."
"I don't… have time to stop," Ishizaki panted, his vision blurring.
Ishizaki Collapses
The drone surged forward, its remaining legs clanking against the ground. Ishizaki raised his blade for one last strike, but his body refused to move. His legs buckled, and he collapsed to his knees, his knife slipping from his trembling hand.
"Ishizaki!" Hana's voice rang out, panic lacing her words.
Drax didn't hesitate. He charged forward, his sledgehammer slamming into the drone with a resounding crash. Sparks flew as the machine staggered, its weapons firing wildly into the air.
"Get him out of here!" Drax shouted to the stranger.
She nodded, grabbing Ishizaki under the arms and dragging him back toward the kids. "Come on, kid," she muttered. "You're not dying on me yet."
The drone began to recover, its weapons locking onto the group again. Drax gritted his teeth and swung his hammer in a wide arc, shattering another of its legs.
"That's your cue to run!" he bellowed.
Finding a Safe Haven
The group finally stumbled upon a small, abandoned outpost nestled in the ruins. The structure was half-collapsed, but its interior was intact enough to provide shelter.
Drax set Mei down carefully before turning to Ishizaki, who lay motionless on the ground. His breathing was shallow, and his face was pale.
"He doesn't look good," Hana whispered, clutching her blanket tightly.
"He'll be fine," Drax said, though his tone lacked confidence. "Just needs rest."
The stranger knelt beside Ishizaki, her fingers brushing against the glowing device embedded in her chest. "He pushed too hard," she muttered. "That thing in his head—Solus—it's killing him."
"Solus isn't killing him," Drax said, his voice sharp. "He's killing himself trying to keep us all alive."
The stranger sighed, her gaze lingering on Ishizaki. "He's strong, I'll give him that. But strength doesn't mean much if he burns out before the real fight even starts."
"What do you know about the fight ahead?" Drax asked, narrowing his eyes.
The stranger hesitated, then leaned back against the wall. "More than I'd like," she admitted. "That facility—it's not just a lab. It's a factory. They're making weapons. Living weapons."
Ishizaki's Recovery
As the group rested, Ishizaki's breathing slowed, his mind drifting into unconsciousness. In the darkness, he felt a faint warmth—a flicker of light that seemed to pulse in time with his heartbeat.
"Host stabilization in progress," Solus said, though its voice sounded distant and distorted.
Ishizaki frowned, his thoughts hazy. "What… is this?"
The light grew brighter, forming into shapes and patterns. For a brief moment, Ishizaki thought he saw faces—familiar and unfamiliar—before the vision dissolved into darkness again.
The warmth faded, replaced by a cold emptiness that sent a shiver down his spine.
"Soon," a voice whispered, low and echoing. "You'll understand soon."
